1 Y/o Gags with Stage 3 and Solid Foods? Anyone Else Have This Problem?

He LOVES stage 2 foods and inhails them. But now its time to come off the bottle and onto foods. Can't change him over without knowing he can EAT. So with anything we give him that is solid or even a stage 3, he gags and then vomits. Some stage 3's he can work and eat, but it leads to gag and vomit before we get through 2 ounces. This has been ongoing for over a month and the doc says just keep going at it. No offense doc but this does not seem normal to me! My daughter was already eating puffs and toddler food by this time even her birthday cake. Today we vomited just on the feel of thick icing. Getting frustrated and would love to hear form someone that has gone through the same thing and how long did it take to overcome this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

IT is now June 12th. We still ahve not made any real progress. I have figured that he loves Gerber stage 3 better because it is nt as chunky as some of beechnut's stuff. I'm giving it till the end of the month then off to a new doctor.

Get a second opinion, or, if you can with out a referal, go to a speech and languge pathologist or an occupational therapist who works with kids with oral motor and feeding disorders, they can probably help you.

If he is not loosing weight, the pediatricain may blow it off, but at some point soon, he needs to start using the mucles he uses to chew, and he needs to chew more difficult things because he needs these muscles for speech development, and you don't want to have this cause a speech delay too.

There really might be some underlying issues with texture sensitivites, I don't know. But, my son did this too. When we started switching him to "big people" food, we thought that we'd try the 3rd foods first. He gagged every time. I just assumed that he didn't like them & just switched him to the same foods that we were eating. He never had a problem with those. I hope that you are able to find some answers.
Good luck

Good Morning,

From my perspective, check to see if your child can breath through his nose while swallowing. Many people--adults too either feel they can't breath, or really cant breath through their nose, so they tend to feel safe with foods that take little effort to ingest. If there is a habit or blockage, in the nasal passage, correct this now. I see adults who have severe stomach problems due to swallowing too much air when eating, and frequently throw up, all the while believing it is a food sensitivity.

Correct swallowing habits with nasal breathing helps with colic, and digestive disorders through all stages of life.

Let me know if I can help.

My daughter is 14mo old now, and we struggled with the same thing. I can say it is starting to get better and I am thankful for it. My pediatrician did stay that at the 15mo check up if there wasn't alot of improvement they would make a referral. My daughter started this gag and vomit routine around 11mo, and she is just now doing stage three and solids. She eats puffs, cherrios, and other finger foods from gerber and stuff. I won't lie there are still some texture issues (eggs, bread type foods ect) but the improvement is reason enough that I will continue to work with her, it is getting much better! Good luck, it will work out, in his own time.

Every baby is different. Quit trying to change NOW-yur doctor is off the rails- keep torturing him when you can clearly see him is suffering. He is wrong- and who said carved in granite that 1 year old is the time. You are right. Let him have some more time, and check Weston Price.com for what food, and perhaps the specific foods are not what is correct. We didn't have the system you are referring to-back in the olden days- just let kids eat- stay away form sugar.
best,k

the first think i'll say is don't worry! i was comparing my second child to my first all the time, because the second also took much longer to eat foods and she was gagging a lot. i think all children are different and it just takes more time for some than others. but you might also be dealing with some sort of sensory issue. i don't have personal experience with this but i know people with children that has issues with certain textures and they had to get some therapy for it, it was not a big deal. maybe you can google this and see if your child is fitting this profile. but it really could just be that he is taking longer. this is what i found with my daughter. at one she was still just getting into table food. now just one and a half months later she is much more comfortable.

good luck and don't stress!

This child is experiencing sensory processing disorder. You need to get to an OT who specializes (SIPT certified) in sensory integration. It has all to do with not getting ahold of his body and the brain, body and central nervous system are not integrating information correctly. They are disconnected but it can be connected with work. Lots of body work. This is not a food issue or just a mouth issue so I wouldn't see a speech pathologist for it. They will just help your child compensate and "get over" the gagging and vomiting by covering symptoms. Find out what the core problem is by checking vestibular and proprioceptive functioning and processing along with tactile. If you can't find anyone to help you write to me and I will find someone up your way. Stay away from doctors and testing. This problem is a software problem, not hardware. So doctors do not know how to handle it. It has to do with facial reflexes, and the suck, swallow ,breathe process as well.

Don't worry about it. Kids are weird about what they like. If his doctor says nothing's wrong, and you keep checking to make sure every so often, just feed him what works. Sometimes the pressure is the problem, kids get upset or want to control. So just say like, "Well, that doesn't work, so let's just have stage 2 foods until it does." Every so often, try something good like a french fry. Don't worry, he won't be taking a bottle in kindergarten, it will work out.

It sounds like he is texture sensitive, and I would get a second opinion. Maybe google texture sensitivity and see what you find. My youngest was sensitive to some things, but this sounds extreme. I hope you find something that will work for your little guy. Good Luck.

Some kids are supersentive to texture. we skipped stage 3 all together becuase they made my daughter gag. if you notice there are a lot fewer flavors in the stage 3...becuase most kids are on regular food by then. follow your gut and let your baby tell you what he needs. if something made my child vomit i would stop immediately.

good luck
