12 Month Old Grinding Her Teeth

My 12 month old has a new favorite trick: grinding her teeth - all four of them. She has her four front teeth (two top, two bottom) and is getting one more on the top. I am sure she's only doing this because she CAN, and it makes an interesting sound/feel, but it sounds awful. Has anyone had experience with this? What did you do (if anything) to get your child to stop? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I used to try to distract my son and get him to do something else with his mouth. For example, I would open my mouth wide and say lalalala and try to get him to copy me. I would also have lots of different teethers or things for him to chew on around so he could find something that felt good to chew on instead of grinding.

In the end I do think this is a normal part of them learning how their bodies work and experimenting with new feelings and sounds but it is very hard to watch and listen too. Good luck.

my almost 12 mo does the same thing I think its bc its a new sensation and sound she can make. I hope it does not go on too long its like nails on a chalk board to me. I dont give her a reaction when she does it bc i dont want her to think its funny to make mom cring then she may keep doing it.

My daughter (21 months) does it every time a new tooth is about to come in. Once the tooth breaks through, she stops. Once I noticed the pattern, I stopped worrying.

My daughter started doing that about same time. I was just like you thinking it wasn't good for her to do that but I just let her be and she just stopped. She does it now every once in a while.

I remember those days! :) My guy did it just because he could and he loved the reaction he would get from other people. It did go away fairly quickly but it felt like forever at the time. Just be patient and try not to give a huge reaction. Good luck to you!

YES! My daughter did the same thing. My cousin is a dentist so I asked her, as well as the pedi, about it. They both said it's normal bc it's something new in their mouth to play with. It also helps to reduce the pressure from teeth coming in. I HATED when my daughter did it. I would continually give her stuff to chew on, or her sippy cup, even sticking my finger in her mouth sometimes to make her stop. lol Fortunately, she got over it within about a week. She actually did it a few different times when different teeth came in. I feel for your ears! lol Don't worry though, it will soon pass. :)

This is fairly normal. I think it has a lot to do with the discomfort of getting new teeth. There isn't much you can do to stop it. Just give it time and once she's finished teething she'll likely stop grinding the teeth too. If it's annoying you, try to ignore it.

Both of my kids did this for a few weeks when there top teeth came in. I would ignore and she will probably stop doing it on her own.

My daughter did this for a couple of weeks and then stopped on her own. I just tried not to make a big deal out of it and gave her alternative teethers to chew on instead. She especially liked one we had that vibrated.
