14 Mo Old Likes to Drop Food/drink from High Chair

yes my dtr is 16mths and has been doing this now it is getting to be annoying she does throw food to the floor and watches the dog eat it or throws her cup like no big deal i definitely know when this happens she is done eating and dont give her any more food she also throws her plate because she does feed her self and than puts her hands in her hair so her hair is usually all messy or very sticky from syrup in the morning your not alone the joys of parenting!!!

My ten month old does this, too. He actually loves to THROW his sippy cup across the room. But he also drops food, and then looks to see where it goes. Or feeds it directly to the dog.

By 14 months, I think your little one is ready to understand consequences a bit better than my guy. I'd tell her "Oh, are you done? Then I'll take that." Then clear her tray. If she's upset, then offer her a smaller snack and say, "If you drop this, dinner's over!"

When she drops it (which she will!), then take it away, and take her out of the high chair. I bet she'll figure it out in a few days, and she won't starve! I'd pick my battles, though. As long as she's eating while dropping, I'd let her drop without comment. Only take away her food when she's dropping for fun, with no eating at all.

Also, I'd let her use the spoon. My son isn't great with a spoon himself, but he's already learning to dip it in yogurt and put it in his mouth. Messy as heck, but he's learning! Your little girl is probably ready to play and learn this way, too. But yeah, it'll end up on the floor too.

PS It is pretty funny, isn't it? I love that look on my son's face. Over and over- like he's thinking, "Wow, gravity still works!" :)

My daughter does this too. Usually when she starts to be about to drop it, I say "noooo" and then if she changes her mind and say "GOOD GIRL". Sometimes she loves my big proud reaction so much that she pretends to be about to thrwo it over and over, just so she can do the right thing and get my reaction.

I say, under-react to the negative and over-react to the positive.

EVery now and then she just goes ahead and throws it anyway, so i just take it away without saying anything. If she was really hungry or thirsty, I know she wouldn't be playing games with it.

If you want her to stop when she drops her cup do not pick it up. When she drops her food to the floor tell her no, when she continues just take her out of the high chair and she will get the message. This is perfectly normal and is usually an indication that they are full, because if they still wanted to eat they wouldn't throw their food. This is her way of saying she is finished. And they also love watching mommy fetch things for them so it becomes a game. Once she sees she can't continue to eat if she does it she will stop. Trust me if she sees her sister do it you will have them both doing it. Good luck!!

My 13 month old does the same thing... in fact, last night he accidentally hit the dog by throwing his bottle and now she's afraid to go near the high chair - it's a circus in my house!

I don't give my son spoons or plates because he'll throw them... I just line up his finger foods on his tray. I hope I'm not getting in the way of his learning, but until this obsession with throwing calms itself a little I have to put safety first!!!!
