14 Month Old Won't Take Milk in Sippy!

Hello Everyone.
My 14 month old daughter will not drink milk out of her sippy cup. She was down to 2 bottles a day (1 morning and 1 at night). She never needed her bottle to go to bed. I finally today took the bottles away today. I've been trying to get her to take the milk in the sippy (before I took the bottles away) and she won't do it. She drinks her water regularly from the sippy, but as soon as she tastes the milk she throws it! It just worries me that she won't get the proper amount of nutrition w/out the milk. Has anyone else had this problem? It's not that she doesn't like the taste as she's been on whole milk for 2 months.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My 2 yr old son has refused milk since he quit using a bottle at around a year. He prefers to drink water. Our pediatrician said he doesn't need milk. Just make sure he gets other foods with calcium daily. My son loves cheese and yogurt (Stonyfield make a great kids yogurt - and their drinkable yogurt is very popular with my son), so we just supplement with these. There are many nondairy foods that provide calcium as well if he doesn't like cheese and yogurt. Broccocli is high in calcium...even goldfish crackers make a calcium enriched "goldfish" now... Good luck.

Hi T., I too have the same problem. Only my daughter is two. I finally got it down to one bottle a night. She will not give it up. She throws the cup at me too. I give her cheese sticks in the day and yogurt(diego). That is how we get the dairy in. I know it is important to get them off the bottle, but if it becomes stressful for you she will sense that, so it might be easier just to take your time. And good luck!

I, too, have a 14 month old, and I too went through the same thing when my daughter was 12 months. I just had to be strong, and not give in and give the bottle. I left the sippy cup out with the milk where she could grab it freely throughout the day. Finally, the 1st day at about 3 or 4 in the afternoon, she started drinking it. Things might change in the fact that she might not ever drink the milk in one sitting like she does with the bottle. She might just graze on it during the day. That is what happened with my daughter. But when she gets thirsty enough, she will start drinking. I would suggest not offering the water, only the milk until she is drinking from the sippy. She will get the nutrients she needs, don't worry! It might be a couple off days, then she will be right back drinking the milk as normal. Good luck and stay strong!

The same exact thing happened with me and my daughter. She wouldn't drink milk out of the sippy cup. Just don't worry about the milk for a week or two. Giving her yogurt twice a day gives her everything she would get from the milk. (My pediatrician told me this). A couple weeks after giving up the bottle, my daughter drank milk from her sippy cup just fine.

Hi T. - I had the same problem with my daughter...there's no need to worry about her nutritional needs, as long as you give her other foods/drinks w/calcium in them....like: OJ w/calcium (this is now my dghtrs favorite drink), yogurt, yogurt drinks, ice cream/frozen yogurt, cheese (string cheese/grilled cheese sandwiches), even broccoli has a lot of calcium in it.....calcium is in so many foods today that it wasn't in when we were kids. Someone also suggested adding chocolate syrup, but I didn't want to do that w/my dghtr...be consistant with the sippy cups though...don't go back to the bottle or you'll be doomed! ;) Good Luck!

I had a similar problem with my son when he was about that age, maybe a bit younger. I know this sounds harsh but I did not offer him anything else to drink except milk in a sippy all day one day. He held out until late afternoon and then drank it and I have not had a problem since. Of course I made sure he did not get dehydrated by taking him out in the heat, we stayed inside most of the day.

Good Luck, K.

This is a very common post here. I think more kids than not go through this. My son is 2 and will only drink chocolate milk. I tried and tried, but he never gave in to drinking plain milk. don't worry about her nutrition, give her foods that are listed in the first response. I hope she eventually gives in, but if she doesn't, don't worry too much. My son is extremely heathy!
As for the taste, my son did drink the whole milk from his bottle. I don't think they really taste it when they gulp it down from a bottle. I really think it skips the tastebuds. So, when transitioning from formula to milk, I don't think the bottle really means much. They will often drink from it, but not from a cup.
By all means, try your best. I don't think I would go too far with it. No one should be forced to drink or eat something they don't like. If someone left me in a room with a peice of fish and said that I had to eat it or starve, I would starve.

T.,

I have a 14 month old daughter that does the exact same thing. I am slowly weaning her off her bottle (we are down to 3). It is a very hard process to do as she loves her bottle. During the day I give her water in her sippy cup we have the ones with the straw cause she bites on the other ones. When I give her the milk in it she makes this awful face like what is this. I just keep giving her the sippy cup with milk at feedings. One day she might take 3 or 4 sips out of it, then I put it in the fridge save it till the next feeding to see if she will drink it some more. I figure she will soon (hopefully) drink it out of the sippy cup so that way we are only down to the nightime bottle.
I also soak her cheerio's in whole milk in the morning to give her cereal and I feed her just like I would myself so that way she gets some extra milk with her breakfest.
I feel your pain and like the other mothers said just keep trying.

I haven't had the bottle to sippy cup problem yet, but have heard of it. From what I have heard and read, she will eventually drink the milk out of the sippy cup. Just keep giving it to her. While I can't totally respond to that issue, I can address the nutritional issue. Many kids will not even touch dairy. My son didn't until he turned three. So nutrionally she will be fine, try feeding her yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese, there are plenty of veggies that offer calicum too. Orange Juice has calcium. Maybe try different cups, have you tried one with a straw, or a small kids size cup with no lid(with supervision)? Try adding chocolate syrup, maybe she will drink it that way. Eventually this will pass and be a faded memory..just be patient. Good Luck!
