Hi Moms,
My son had shots on Wednesday including MMR, which gave him a fever of 102.1 yesterday and he was miserable. Today he is better but tonight he had the runs so bad it was every where. Is there anything on the market safe for infant diarhea? Any food suggestions? He is refusing to eat pretty much too. The occasional bite of banana, crackers, some juice or water. Any food he should stay away from? My husband had a stomach virus last weekend and I hope my son doesn't have it too. We shall see how tomorrow fairs. Any advice would be helpful! Thank you in advance...
Chris

So What Happened?

Thanks to all for your responses. Pedialite was a bust as he will absolutely refuse it-all flavors cold or room temp. He ate dried cherrios, banana and toast. He stoped the diarrhea but now refuses to eat and is gagging on everything. He is drinking a lot which is good but eating little now I am thinking it is more teeth. So if no improvement by the end of the week I will call the Dr. Thanks Moms!

When my son had diarrhea the doctors told me not to give him juice because it might cause more diarrhea. I used pedialite. They have it in liquid and Popsicles. Hope that helps.

Hi Chris,
I have always heard to follow the B.R.A.T diet for diarrhea. Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast. Just make sure he gets lots of liquids so he doesn't dehydrate. Increasing his liquids will not cause more diarrhea. Give him water, popscicles, freezer pops, anything with a lot of water in it. Also, if the diarrhea continues, you may want to get him some PediaLite. Good luck!

My son 2 1/2 had the stomach virus last week the worst my kdis ever had, however he was also thrwoing up. anyway, if he doesn't want to eat don't worry about it, if he does though try rice and cheese, things that bind you up. At this point you're just going to want to make sure he is keeping himself hydrated, get some pedialyte or gatorade to give him to drink. Also they have the pedialyte freezer pops that my kids really like they think they're getting something special and they eat the whole thing. and I'll tell you those were the only thing that my son could keep down when he was sick, they are so mild and bland, but are full of the electrolytes that they need. But at his age I wouldn't give him any meds for it, just let it runs its course and keep him hydrated. If he doesn't want to eat, don't push it and when he does then start with toasts, breads and other binding foods. Oh adn if you don't have one pick up a waterproof pad for his crib, they're great for when the kids are sick, you just lie it directly under him then you won't have to constantly change and wash sheets (which can be a pain in a crib). They're washer and dryer safe and cheap, you can get them at walmart. Hate when the little ones are sick, worst part of mommyhood! Good luck, Jennifer

Hi Chris. Well I hope your son is feeling better but if his stomach virus is anything like the one my daughter had about a month and a half ago... he is still sick :( She caught a stomach virus (I think at the Dr.'s) and it was horrible. She too would only eat some crackers, bananas, juice, water, and she did still drink milk fine after the first day. It started with throwing up and then turned into terrible diarrhea that lasted for weeks. She is usually a great eater and her appetite was very little. We just kept offering lot's of fluids and foods that are lighter like breads, oatmeal, and rice. Her appetite slowly came back and while she seemed much better after about a week and a half, it took another week or so for her diarrhea to clear up all the way. We also bought some pedialite just in case, but I think as long as your son is taking in plenty of fluids you don't need it. Good luck! I am sure he will be ok, especially since he is eating and drinking :)

I don't know about any medications, but keep trying to give him bananas and cheese. These are two foods that have the quickest effect on my kids when they have had the runs. Also, stay away from the juices until his bowels are back to normal. They have the opposite effect on the bowels.

Follow the BRAT diet. Bananas, Rice, Apples, Toast. My son had a horrible stomach virus when he was 11 months. He wouldn't eat, and I couldn't give him milk based formula, so I switched to soy, and mixed in some rice cereal. Then I only fed him bananas, toast and applesauce. Try to give him fluids, or pedialite. My son wouldn't drink that either though. Stick with the BRAT diet until his stool is normal. Hang in there. It's so hard when you have diarhea shooting out the arm holes of the PJ's! Also, if he gets a diaper rash for more than 3 days, start using Lotrimin on his bum to prevent a yeast infection. Do not use any diaper cream that has cornstarch in it, that will cause a yeast infection! I also used liquid Mylanta in the diaper to neutralize the acid in the diarhea.

We all had the virus a week after Easter, and my 13 month old daughter had the diarrhea part again this week. The doc said it was "just a touch", but put her on antibiotics for a sinus infection (she has had a snotty nose for a month). The pharmacist said the diarrhea is probably related to post-nasal drip and there is nothing you can give them to "fix" the diarrhea. "BRAT" (as mentioned by another mom), plus cheese, potatoes - anything starchy and binding. If you son has any other symptoms, you might want to call your doc back and see...Good luck!

Everyone is telling you BRAT diet and I am a nurse and I agree....I just wanted to add so you always know for the future, this..... Never try to stop, with medicine a child who is throwing up or diarhea, unless a Dr. tells you to. When a child vomits or has the "runs", it is their body trying to literally eliminate the bad bug or virus that is in their body. If you try to slow it down or stop it, you are actually causing that virus or germ to stay in their body longer and may actually make them more sick. I feel your pain. I honestly do not think your child's diarhea is due to the shot. My son has had the vomit and Diarhea thing too this week and I know what you mean by EVERYWHERE. Hope your son feels better soon. Also you might want to give him Tylenol only for the fever. Stay away from ibuprofen otherwise known as Advil or Motrin as that this might make the stomach feel worse. If he goes 6-8 hours with out wetting a diaper, make sure to get him to the Dr. Fever and Diarhea at that age can really dehydrate a child fast. I will say a short prayer that he does not start to vomit on top of all his other issues. Good luck! Take care and feel better. :-)

I'm a mother of two grown children and a grandmother of a 15 month old.
Hello Chris,
Foods that will bind him are bananas, apple juice (clear) crackers, plain toast, cheese.
Stay away from any other juice.fruit and veggies until the diarhea has subsided.
Pedialite you can get at the drug store to replace the electrolites that he is losing, so he doesn't dehedrate.
also remember that a fever is a good sign that our bodies are fighting a infection. any fever near 104-105 above is when it is time to worry. Luke warm baths will bring down the fever. If he still has the fever after 2-3 days i would call your doctor
