Hi Everyone! I was wondering if anyone had ideas on what gift(s) to buy our son who is turning one in a couple of weeks. We would love something sentimental and the ideas I have read are mostly for little girls! We have the handprint stand for years 1-5 already. I've also thought of a blanket. Any suggestions?
I want to thank everyone for such wonderful suggestions! I'm happy I posted this question to you all. So far we decided to set up a college savings account for him. We also will purchase a growth chart and start a birthday scrapbook. We were also thinking of asking our family members to write letters about his first year to put in the scrapbook! I've basically combined several suggestions into these gifts! Thank you again! We are so excited to celebrate his first year!
For my two sons - every year we get them a Silver American Eagle Coin from the US Mint. We set up an account and when the new coin comes out - it automatically comes to us. It's in the Spring some time. We don't really give them the coin as a present, but it's something they get every year, will appreciate and is special to us and will be to them!
My son in now 3 and every birthday he gets a part to a Precious moments train. They are displayed on a shelf(he can't reach) in his room. It is very cute and each piece of the train has a number-there age that year-.
For my daughter'st first birthday, we got her a rocking horse and a few small things. But that wasn't the most important part of what we gave her. I thought that no one remembers their first b-day, and rarely do we get gifts that last very long, so my husband and I had all of our family members that live close to us write small letters to her telling her what they remember most about when she was born, her first year and all her 'firsts' and how much they love her...some were from great-grandparents that might not be around too much longer. I have them in a keepsake box with some of her birthday party decorations that I will give her when she is old enough to appreciate it. I thought that was a neat idea!

What you might like to start doing is creating a scrapbook. Begin taking pictures (keep the camera w/you at all times). All kids, no matter the age, love to see pictures of themselves having fun or acting a bit silly. You can put cool stickers or drawings next to the pictures. Any little keepsake next to the photograph could remind him of that day he took the picture. In the future he could even help with it. I love my scrapbooks & I have one for each of my kids. They love to help too. Don't forget to date your pics (I have a time remembering what age they were in certain pictures). Enjoy!

How about a growth chart? I've seen them where you can put the childs photo next to how big they are so they can see how they are growing through the years. I think Lilian
Vernon has one plus she has a lot of nice stuff you can have personalized.

We had a small table and chairs custom painted with her name on it and a fun unique one of a kind design. It was a little costly, but I had several family members chip in and on the bottom, we wished her a happy birthday and everyone's name was on it. It will be a keepsake piece for her. And not that she is four, she has used that table for all kinds of play things. I have more comments on it.

I also had the idea of a blanket for my children. I am going to take their old clothing (birth and up)to have a quilt made with them. Another idea may be to create a journal for him to read when he is older. You could write little tid bits about him, his weight ect. at his baby well checks, a letter from you and your husband on the first year with him. I hope this helps. S. L.
a picture frame with mat that has openings (and labels) for every year from birth to 18 years.
I gave my son a bookcase for his first birthday. It's filled with books and we read everyday. Also - as some other mamas mentioned, I wrote him a letter telling him all about what our first year together was like and how much he means to me.
I had a huge success when I bought my son a potty chair for his first birthday. He is almost two now and has been potty trianed for six months!
Happy Birthday to your son, first birthday is very special. What we did when our daughter turned 1(she is almost 2 now) is beside the huge party with clowns and amazing cake, we established a bank account for her and deposited a good amount of money and ever since I have been adding whatever I can to it. It builds up very well and I am sure she will appreciate it when she is a college student! Just an idea.
We started the Precious Moment's Birthday train for my son. He knows it's his and likes to look at it sometimes, but when he gets older he'll have it and hopefully appreciate it!
Plant a tree in your yard and watch it grow as he grows, if you don't own you could also donate a tree to a local park and eventually have a plaque put on it. Best, J.
Our daughter is turning one in two weeks and I am struggling too. I received a suggestion from parents who have 3 kids and have done this for each one. They purchase an expensive case of wine or champagne (the kind that appreciates with age) and mark each bottle for the "milestones" in their children's lives. Graduations, marriage, etc... and plan to either give them the bottle or hopefully share the bottle with them on these occassions commemorating their life. Just a thought!
