20 Wks: Baby Movement

I was wondering, do any of you ladies recall when you 1st felt your baby move, and if so what exactly did it feel like? I've been experiencing what feels like "light taps" from the inside...but nothing significant. I was wondering if this was typical?

Revised

I'm still fairly small, from what I've been hearing...I don't look like I'll be 5 months tomorrow. A friend of mine said she thought I was only 3 months, and was shocked when I told her I'll be five soon. I was a premi (born @ 3months, weighed a little over 3lbs), and have been fairly petite all my life, I wonder if that makes a difference in the size of my baby?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I'm so excited, it's been a tough road but I glad I made the decision I did. Being a mother seems like a really rewarding time in a woman's life. I'm looking forward to getting a little further along so I can really see some action! Lol. The baby seems to really like being in my lower abdomen...feels like he/she's having a party down there : )

It felt like butterflies and it felt so cool. I really missed that when the baby was born so cherish every moment.
I felt the baby move at 20 wks w/my 1st one and on my 2nd it was more like 14 wks.

It was the BEST. Good Luck and Congrats.

Mine occurred when I was about 16-18 weeks along, but it took me a long time to convince myself that I wasn't "making up" what I felt. In other words, I didn't know if it was my stomach acting weird and digesting food, or if it was my baby. For me, it felt like a light tap (like if someone lightly touches your shoulder to get your attention), but only it was coming from inside of my lower abdomen!!! Of course, they got much stronger as time progressed, and I knew it wasn't just wishful hoping :)

You're probably feeling the baby move. I started feeling mine at about 5 months. It's kind of felt like a heartbeat coming from my stomach. Many people will tell you that it's either the baby moving or gas. Either one is possible, but I preferred to think it was the baby.

I wouldn't worry about your size. I'm 27 and 6 months pregnant with my first baby too, but I just started looking pregnant a few weeks ago. Before I just looked like I was gaining a little weight.

Yes, you can feel taps, like butterfly wings flapping inside you, thats what I felt the first time I was almost 14 weeks pregnant. Sometimes feels like gas bubbles different stuff. The hiccups are the weirdest feeling, it feels like your whole belly is jumping up and landing again. Enjoy, I loved being pregnant.

When you first start feeling the movements, they are tiny little taps, or bubbles. Normal. Think of it this way, at 20 weeks a baby is still under a pound in weight. As they grow, so do the movements.

As far as the final size of the baby, it depends on the genetics of both you and your husband. I'm sure your Dr. can assure you what is the norm and what will be norm for you.

Congrats and Good Luck!!

I'm 33 weeks with my first and I remember feeling her around 20 weeks. It felt more like gas bubbles to me for awhile until I realized that it was the baby and not my stomach :) As for your size, it really depends on each person. I'm in my 8th month and everyone tells me how small I am so I wouldn't worry about it too much. Everyone shows differently and if you were small to begin with then you probably don't overeat like some new moms do and you were small to begin with anyway. I look like I'm hiding a basketball under my shirt but everywhere else looks pretty much the same as before I was pregnant. Even from behind I don't look pregnant but I also don't look as skinny as I used to. Also, I have heard and seen that you show earlier and bigger with subsequent pregnancies so since this is your first, it's pretty normal for people to think you look small. Over the next couple of months you'll start to "pop" out as the baby starts getting bigger, faster. Good luck and let me know if you need anything else. (____@____.com)

You're feeling baby! I remember it well, even though it was 9 years ago. At first, it almost felt like little gas bubbles in my tummy, but then I noticed a pattern to them, and especially when I would lay down and be really still. In the next few weeks you'll start feeling much more pronounced little jumps and rolls. You'll definitely know it's baby. Of course, by 30-35 weeks, you will be kicked, punched and have your ribs and bladder knocked around. And you will love it! It only gets really miserable when you're a few weeks from delivery. However it sounds like you are going to be going through your biggest months in the heat! Stay inside!

Ripples or butterflies... really cool & you usually feel them a bit earlier with subsequent pregnancies.

I am sure that is your baby moving. With my first i felt her moving about 18 weeks. It was exactly what you are saying yours feels like. I was more in the 6 or 7th months when i could really notice the kicks and see them happening. I am currently 25 weeks pregnant with my second and i could fee her moving at about 16 weeks. Your muscles are still really tight and that is why you cannot feel it as much. Just give it some time and you will for sure know when your little one is awake!!! Also CONGRATS!!!!

M.,

I felt my first baby move at 14 weekks and did not feel my second untill 21 weeks maybe even 22. To me at first it felt like gas bubbles then more of a quizy feeling like someone doing o flip in my tummy.

Also I as 98 lbs and 5'6 when I got pregnant with my first and had him a week early... 8.7 and 22". My second was 2 weeks early 8.6 and 22" So I would say size of you does not determine size of baby. However the size of your tummy might make a difference my tummy looked 5 months preg. at 3 months.

That is probably the baby. I have a 4 yr. old and a 5 month old and my first one right around 18 weeks just gave a hard kick! I think I felt fluttering a bit before that but wasn't sure if I was just thinking I did or not. With my second, he was more laid back. Thats all he did was little flutter movements around 21-22 weeks. And here is something to think about-my daughter is super outgoing-more dominant personality. My son is very laid back and just really easy going...weird how you can tell their personality even in the womb....

Good luck with your first!

I started feeling movement around 14 weeks. It was so light, but if I sat really really still, I would feel a movement. We were at the beach on vacation, so I was basically laying down the entire time and had lots of opportunities! How exciting that your feeling your sweet little baby! You'll have fun, in a month or so you'll really get a kick show!

I first realized what the movements were at around 20 weeks (I'm 26 weeks now). I never felt the butterfly ones...or if I did I had no idea they were the baby moving. My first time I knew it was the baby was like you said...a tap. Now it feels like a thump when he moves.

Is it not the coolest EVER!! I do notice that when I am active (walking around alot or really busy) he doesn't move much. But when I am sitting still, laying down, etc. he is very active. Someone told me that when you are moving you are rocking the baby so it is settled and doesn't move around as much.

Now, what's wild is that when the phone rings in the bedroom (it is one of the loud ones that is not cordless) it startles him! It takes him a few minutes to settle down! Also, the alarm clock ticks him off! It scares him and he gets all flustered! Too cute!!

Good luck,
C.

I am 30 weeks and felt my baby kick for the first time around week 16. I was like you and never knew if what I was feeling was a kick or not. The first time I was sure it felt like a baby bird was in my tummy and was tryng to fly out.

I too was fairly small in the belly until about the 6th month. Everytime I told someone how far along I was they were shocked and told me how small I was. Now no one is surprised and keeps commenting on how big I am. It was in the 6th month that my belly grew everyday by leaps and bounds. I think that being small until the 6th month is normal but people always remember pregnancy as the big belly and so are surprised when a belly is small. You always think of a pregnant belly as big and round but people forget that it takes about 6 month of development until the baby is just adding fat and weight rather than developing internally.
