Hello Moms - my 3 year old daughter just recently developed a dry flaky scalp and I'm trying to figure out the best thing to use on it. I'm not sure if it is because of the change of weather (we are use to California weather) other than that everything is pretty much the same. Would really appreciate any insight any of you may have. Thank you all!!!!

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your responses to my request. I have switched shampoos and that really seems to help. I was using Johnsons and Johnsons before and switched to an all natural shampoo...wow what a difference! I scrubbed her hair really well to break up the flakes and that seemed to help too, her scalp is almost back to normal now. Thank you again you mommies are the best!!!!

Its not unusual when the heat kicks in to dry out the air and your skin. My daughter has had the same issue every year since she was born, usually beginnning in Nov and eases up in the spring. The doctor told me to rub olive oil... it works but makes hair greasy so I try to remember to do it in the afternoon before a bath. It helps some.. although you need to be consistent.

I would go ahead and try Head and Shoulders or its generic and make sure she puts her head back when you wash her head. If it works well for adults, then there is no reason why you cannot use ut on your child. If the problem persists like it did on my child, you may want to make sure it is not a bigger problem. Dry, flaky skin and scalp is a symptom of Celiac Disease. A.

Avoid harsh shampoos and chemical-laden hair care products. Shampoo with Naturals Melaleuca Oil Shampoo once or twice a day while dandruff is present. Leave the Naturals Melaleuca Oil shampoo on the scalp for at least three minutes before rinsing. It contains an abundance of healing T36-C5 Melaleuca Oil and works particulary well in the treatment of common scalp conditions such as dandruff. Since thi shampoo contains conditioner, do not use an extra conditioner. This is a all natural product so it is very safe. HI! I use a moisturizing shampoo for my daughter. You might want to try the JOhnson and Johnson Moisturizing Shampoo. Make sure her head stays moisturized because it can get worse. It might be the change of weather. Good Luck!

Ladies - these "questionable" products might work to get rid of symptoms, but is it worth the risk to your baby?

Prior to using theses products, please check into them. I just went onto EWG.org and both head & shoulders and selsun blue contain a known carcinogen (selenium sulfide) and formaldehyde (DMDM HYDANTOIN). Not to mention some other scary ingredients.

The combination of products you use in your home around the kids, on their clothes and on their bodies directly have a HUGE impact on the health of your family. This is extremely important as little bodies are more intensely impacted by toxic ingredients than our adult (bigger) bodies.

I am sure if you go to an "organic store" you can find a better equivalent though you will have to pay$.

We shop with Melaleuca. They make a great super concentrated, herbal/botannical shampoo ($7.69 for 8 oz)that contains a high concentration of pure T36-C5 Melaleuca Oil - guaranteeing the naturally antiseptic and cleansing properties of this essential oil are maximized to deep clean hair while paying special attention to the scalp. Unlike chemical-based medicated shampoos, Melaleuca Original Shampoo is alcohol-, fragrance-, and dye-free and leaves no lingering odor. Plus, it´s gentle and safe enough to be used every day by everyone in the family (from their website).

I personally use Paul Mitchell Tea Tree shampoo to treat this for myself. My hair dresser suggested I use it on my daughter also (who is 3) but I have not tried it since she has not had a problem. I would be very careful not to get it in her eyes!!

Hi, I am glad you asked that question because I sometimes have the same problem with my two year old daughter. If you don't mind, when you get some responses will you email me some suggestions? ____@____.com
If you don't want to then that is fine also.
Thanks and good luck

More than likely this is caused by the change in weather patterns. However, my son had the same problem and the pharmacist suggested that I use selsun blue and it took the problem right away after about 3-5 washes.

May sound yucky... But try some vegetable oil. Works for my 8 month old!

Be sure to manipulate/scrub (within reason here) before washing with a selsun blue or other antidandruff shampoo. You can use a brush and brush the hair and scalp well or you can use your hands. This will break up the flakes so that the active ingredients in the shampoo can actually reach the scalp. Also lather and scrub well into scalp, then rinse.
