3Rd on the Way ~ How to Tell DH UPDATED WHAT Happened : )

Ok I already asked about getting 3 car seats in our cars. Now I am wondering how you would or did tell your DH that the much loved but unscheduled # 3 is on the way? Not sure how to bring it up. He is out of town until tomorrow, but I seriously doubt that I am going to be able to keep this to myself until he gets home tomorrow. Do I blurt out and say "Hey I guess we did need that box of condoms instead of taking a chance" or "Hmmm... seems my fertility issues are over" or "Guess what you gave me for Christmas?" A little freaked (and excited) because our current youngest is not even 1 until next month. I wanted #3 I just didn't mean for the last 2 to be so close together. My DH however was not sold on the idea of 3 yet...

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

He didn't get home from his business trip until around 7:30 last night and he changed and we went out to eat at our favorite little local restaurant. Of course I am squirming, but he is so tired and just got home. I told him that we needed to have an "adult" conversation after the kids were in bed or we could do it tomorrow. He said I am exhausted if it can wait let it wait until tomorrow. We eat and get home and I knew that there was no waiting until tomorrow, I might bust if I tried. I mean it had already been over 24 hours that I had known. I took out the box ~ a pretty Christmas box but no wrapping paper and handed it to him. He said "what is this" I said "Merry Christmas". He opened it and went "Oh Jesus". I had to laugh, because of any answers I expected that would not be the one I expected, He took it like a champ though and then my moment came of "how are we going to do this?" and he said "we can do it" and I think he was in shock the rest of the evening. Thanks everyone for your support and here is to the next several months : )

Update: I am guessing that he is really ok with this. He is already suggesting baby names and looking at the possibility of a new car. We however are going to wait to tell the families until a little farther along.

I like the "guess what you gave me for Christmas", since it implies that baby #3 is a gift =) Not big on mentioning the condoms thing, since that seems to imply that this was more of an "accident". It doesn't really matter, but since hubby may take some time getting used to it (you say he wasn't really sold on 3 yet) then I would set the tone now that this is a good gift or surprise--not that you guys made a mistake in contraception. Just my 2 cents--congrats on you pregnancy!

i agree guess what you gave me for xmas is great, thats pretty much what I said to my hubby with our baby, he had absolutely skipped my bday, and I was bitter until i found out we'd conceived the same week. He wasnt too impressed for a while but what could he say, it takes two... lol (best bday gift ever!!)

Congrats :)

I like the Christmas idea too :)

But for another idea, perhaps ask him if he could stop at the store on his way home tomorrow & pick up whatever helped you with morning sickness with the previous pregnancies! Or even something you craved a lot with the last pregnancy. Something that would be out of the ordinary for you to call & ask for! LOL Mine was crackers & Sprite, even tho I don't normally drink carbonated drinks haha

Congrats! I'm still itching to have our second, but deployments & lack of employment haven't helped!

I just made this announcement to my hubby on New Year's Eve. We too got a very unexpected surprise. I did it quick like a band aide and blurted it out and then immediately started bawling. It wasn't planned, we said out last was out "grand finale". He was fantastic about it saying it was a good thing and nothing to cry over (even though I know he has been adamant about having 2). We both freaked out a bit. I even posted my freaked out rant on here. Now that we have had some time to adjust and make plans we are both excited and happy. Congrats on the surprise! :)

How about a baby dinner when he arrives. Baby corn, cornish hens, and anything baby.During dinner you could also have songs playing baby songs. "Baby baby baby ooooo" Justin Beiber, "Baby Love my baby love" Diana Ross, "Baby I love your way, everyday" Peter Frampton, I can soooo go on with that. Let me know if you want more!!!
And top dinner off with baby cakes. But hold off until he comes home whatever you decide.
It's more fun in person
Congrats on your impending arrival!!!!!

I say put your pregnancy test in a box w/ a bow and give it to him when he gets home. Tell you you both have a belated Christmas gift or something extra to be thankful for next Thanksgiving and hand him the box.

I know it's much more fun to tell them in person, but if you honestly can't wait can you take a picture of your pregnancy test and send it to him via text? :) I did that when I found out I was pregnant with our second. He was out partying with "the boys" celebrating his last day at one job and moving into a new job. That was also the reason I finally got the go ahead to get pregnant again. So.....he was at the bar and I sent him a text with the picture of the positive pg test and said "another reason for you to celebrate tonight". He was SO excited and even called and asked me to come pick him up early (I was his designated driver).

"Guess what you gave me for Christmas" that's GREAT! I would use that one. I would be as positive as you can and let him know how happy and excited you are. Then if he needs to talk about his fears and uncertainties, of course be there for him, but start off on a positive note.

I'd go with the Christmas gift and/or the 2nd wearing a big brother/sister shirt! I'm with the others that the condom thing makes it seem more like an accident than a blessing. My younger brother and I are only 20 months apart and my parents had only planned on 2 (he was the 3rd). They never refer to him as an accident but always their "bonus"!

I took a pic of my daughter in a big sister shirt and a picture of the positive pregnancy test and sent it to him in an email...and then he called and acted like I hadn't sent him anything. It was fun!

I love the Christmas comment.

Don't worry about any reaction/non reaction he might have now. Our third was a surprise and my husband wasn't thrilled at first. It wasn't until the ultrasound at 20 weeks and he saw our third girl's heart beating and sucking her little thumb that he got all teary and happy. Our youngest two are 19 months apart. We announced the 3rd pregancy at our 2nd's first birthday.

Congratulations!

CONGRATULATIONS!!

I think if i were you I would do everything I could not to blurt it out so I could tell him in person. I love the t-shirt idea below. I also love the idea of wrapping up a baby item and giving it to him.
For our #2 i wrapped up a newborn onesie that said "daddy's lil' slugger" it had pin stripes like a baseball uniform. He was so shocked...and later excited!

I'd say "well honey, when the kids are older and the time is right and need to talk to our kids about safe sex and surprise pregnancies, we'll have to get someone else to tell them.... because......" Listen bottom line if hubby was willing to forgo the condoms he knew the risks, he'll be fine.
