5 Month Old Boy Wetting His Pjs and Bed in His Sleep

My son is 5 months and is always peeing on himself while he is sleeping. He used to do this often during his first month. Just recently, it started again. In the morning his PJs and sheets are usually wet/damp (unless I get up in the middle of the night and catch it then). I was thinking of cutting a diaper and putting it in his diaper for extra support. I make sure his diaper is tight enough, but it still happens. Has anyone experienced this and if so, any solutions? Thanks.

All my children (I have 4) have soaked through their diapers....I switch to Huggies Overnights...sometime I used the next size up. They work like a charm! Or just try the next size up at night in a regular diaper! Good luck!

We had this problem with my son on and off (he is 2 now). We found that the Luvs diapers don't leak as much as the pampers and huggies, but he still went through at night. Then we found the greatest product. It is called a doubler. It looks like a maxipad without the sticky tape. You insert it into the diaper and it provides extra absorbancy. The only place we have found them so far is Stop and Shop.
Good Luck!

Usually when I found my baby boy was peeing through his diaper, I moved him up to the next size - even though I swore it looked like the diapers still fit him - but when I moved him up he had no problems.

hi, not sure exactly how long a period of time you have between putting him to bed, and you going to bed...but my daughter leaks through nearly all the time...i go to bed about 3 hrs after she does, and IF she's completely dry when i go to bed, i leave it, but even if there's a little in her diaper, i change it! once i started this (plus putting her in a diaper 1 size bigger then she really needs) the wetting of the bed pretty much stopped. granted, if she sleeps longer then normal, she will sometimes wet through, ESPECIALLY if she drinks more at night. i would try diapers 1 size bigger (unless you have luck finding the overnight diapers...i've looked and can't seem to find them). also you can try a different brand. luvs and pampers seem to suck and leak even when they're not full (and i mean leak THROUGH the front, not even the sides, through the diaper itself), huggies are pretty good, but they leave those gel balls if they're in it a little too long. SURPRISINGLY store brands work oh so much better (EXCEPT KIRKLAND...they are the WORST diapers i've EVER used!!!)...oh, and if your son is in a size 3, get a size 4...all store brands tend to run 1/2 size smaller! good luck, hope this helps.

Making them tighter probably won't help much and might make him uncomfortble. Try putting him in a bigger diaper at night only (if he's in stage 2, try a stage 3 at night); make sure they are snug (not tight) around his legs. This worked for us. You could also try another brand of diapers - my son leaked with Luvs and Pampers, but Huggies worked well for us.

Hi C.,

I think I could help.. when my 11 mth old was 5-6 mths old the same thing was happening. As he started to sleep through the night I would awake to a wet crib & baby! My sister-in-law geave me the idea to use a product called DIAPER DOUBLERS! They work great & I'm still using them I don't send him to bed without one. You can but them in Stop & Shop or even Toys R Us. They look like maxi pads & it is just a simple piece of cotton that you place inside the diaper.

Good Luck!

I have one year old twins and had the same problem with the one boy. I buy the huggies overnights. Regular diapers wet through still if I don't use them. They are thicker and hold more fluid. Try it!!!

Yep, I use this as a cue that it's time to go up a size. We also use different diapers at night than during the day. My little guy is a Pampers kid, so we use Baby Dry's at night and Cruisers during the day. It's kind of a pain to have two types of diapers in the house, but it gives us dry mornings, so it's worth it! Hope this helps!

I don't know if this will help but when my son was a baby he had the same problem, I'm not sure how we figured it out but if we used diapers with velcrow they never seemed to be tight enough and always leaked but if we used diapers with the tape straps we never had a problem. Hope this helps! T.

Lets see... When my son was that old I think he did a lot of bed wetting too. Forgive me though it seems like a while ago. My first piece of advice is that he's still on a liquid diet for the most part so really he is going to be urinating a lot anyway. Secondly I found that some diapers allowed for leakage non-stop. I use Huggies and find them to be the best of the best. Another thing I found was that I needed to put the diaper on kind of tightly or else they would leak too. My honest opinion is that aside form the idea that you don't want your kid to be sleeping in his own urine, I don't think there is a whole lot you can do at this point. My son is 1 1/2 and he still has what I call "peepee pants" on occasion. It generally happens on days when he's had a lot to drink. Like I said earlier your son his still on a liquid diet for the most part, once he starts eating more solid foods it should subside. I hope this helps a little:)

Sometimes I put a pull-up over my baby's diaper... and don't forget to get OVERNIGHT diapers, they really are different.

When it kept happening... I gave them big drinks (yummy tea) at 4:00pm and then I stopped giving them anything to drink after 5:00pm. I always make sure they go to the potty before bedtime (after brushing teeth) and they did outgrow it.

Hello, my name is H. and I live in Rochester, NY...YES! I HAVE experienced this. I have a 12 year old son and a 13 year old son. When my oldest was newborn I was going through the same thing. I told my mother about the frustration and she asked me, "Are you 'pointing him' down?" and I thought, 'I don't know'...so then when I put the diaper on the next time, I used my finger to tuck him downward when closing the diaper to secure it. If you aim him right at the padding in the diaper. My son was shooting upward where there wasn't as much padding and it was soaking up his belly.
Don't know if this will help in your situation and you may already be doing that, but when I read this I had to respond!

Maybe try the next size up in diapers. And make sure that his lil' "Johnson" is tucked in and down. My sons both did this and bigger diapers seemed to help. Also maybe try changing him before you go to bed if he stays asleep for you. Then you would be breaking up how many hours he has one diaper on. Good Luck!

Iv'e heard that boys tend to urinate more than girls as infants on average. There is not much you can do because he needs the fluids and that is his still his main source of nutrition. What I bought and found helpful was the large underpad that are sort of adhesive like they don;t move w/the child posing a risk for suffocation. At least you can preserve the sheets/mattress and don;t have to change the sheets every night. Also the type of diaper you use can make a difference. Some diapers do hold more wetness than others and help to keep baby drier. This gets better with time just hold on...:-) all the best!

We had to switch to the overnite diapers around that age, since our son was waking up soaked everynight also. Even though your son is probably still tiny, buy the first available size in overnite diapers (I think they start in size 3 or 4). They'll be huge on him, but it really will make a difference. It worked for us! Hope you have dry mornings soon.

Hi C., My 2 1/2 yr old son does the same thing.
I went to WalMart and found these plastic underpants that I put over his nighttime diaper. This works for us.
I change his diaper at midnight and that is when I put this on. And I also use a larger size diaper for the overnight time along with the plastic underpants.
(note; he doesn't even wake up for the midnight change anymore...he sleeps right thru it)
Hope this helps.

I know this is going to seem pretty simple, but be sure that when you diaper him his little pee pee is not pointing up when you put him in a diaper at night. We used a couple of different brands, but on our son Huggies diapers had less leeking becuase they sat so high on his waist, and we did use the night time ones.

No need to cut and paste diapers. For night time. I always had to put a diaper one size larger than what my son wore, specially around that age. I also only use night time diapers at night, the regular diapers don't hold enough for the entire night. I use Huggies Overnite diapers, it comes in a purple bag and they have it at shprite, cvc,...

I use cloth diapers and have NEVER EVER had a leak. If that isnt feasible (lets face it...its a big upfront cost, but saves money in the long run) try buying cloth diaper covers to put over his disposables. It will atleast contain it so he isnt soaking through.

Whenever this happened with kids, I would just go up a diaper size. It usually fixed the problem. If that doesn't work, instead of wasting a good diaper, you could always try the nighttime diapers.

Hi,
Get Diaper Doublers, they sell them at Stop & Shop (sometimes they don't have them, check their website www.thenurseryroom.com or call 800-262-0042). It's like a maxi-pad that you put in the diaper, keeps them dry all night. Good luck!

You may have to try a more absorbant diaper. I have tried them all and the only one that lasts through the night is pampers. Even then if I give him an extra bottle his pjs might be damp by morning.
I tried the store brands eager to save a few bucks and they did not make it for nite time use. They were fine during the day when he's changed more often.

I know this may sound a little wierd, but make sure his little peter is facing down when you put him to bed at night. both my boys from birth were tummy sleepers and always had the wet stomachs in the morning. I finally realized that sometimes their little "thing" would be facing up and they would pee on the top of the diaper instead of down where the padding is.
Another thing is yes, go up a size. you can also do the little "new born belly button" trick and fold down the top rim of the diaper to trap any escaping pee during the night.

Hi - I read your post, and I had the same problem when my son was 5 mos. old (he's 13 mos now). Huggies makes night-time diapers for babies that work so well - they are thicker & bigger so they hold more. I buy a size bigger than what my son wears in normal diapers. Target & Wegmans sells them...

good luck-

Try special nighttime diapers (Huggies Overnites are great!!! Available at Target, BabiesRUs) and/or bigger size than during the day. Plus for a boy I put the front part of the diaper higher than the back since this is were the pee goes the most. Good luck!
