Hi mommas, i have a 5 year old DS who loves to run. And I don't mean around the playground. I mean he loves to run everywhere. For example, we live on acreage. Yesterday, he ran for the whole time we were outside. He usually either gets on the trampoline or runs on the acreage. I am estimating here based on the length of our property, but i estimate he ran at least 3/4 of a mile and wanted to keep doing it. I entered him in a 1 K fun run tomorrow after i showed him the track and he got super excited. Anyone else have or had a runner at this age? What did you or do you do with it? :-)

What can I do next?

Sounds fine...I know there's a limit on how much a little body should exercise at that age, so check with your pediatrician if your child wants to pick up the distance.

My 5 yo just started "mini-track stars" through parks and rec. My older kids did kids triathlons when they were younger. If they have a sport they love, go for it. But I will warn you, that if they are serious about it, it's a lot of work for them and you. My daughter does water polo now. It's 2 hours a day, year round, (and two morning sessions a week) plus travel for tournaments on weekends.

I was a runner as well. I did cross country, track...you name it.
The only thing I would say is to consult his pediatrician and be aware that running can be h*** o* the body.
I ruined my knees running and had all kinds of problems in high school and as a young adult.

Just be careful, make sure he has good shoes and let him run.

Best wishes!

by the time he hits middle school, you'll have cross-country & track for him! In the meantime, contact those coaches & see what's available.

Also check with your local fitness centers....

My son! He is 5 1/2 and never walked-at 8 months he stood up and ran. We have put him in soccer, daddy plays sports with him-especially football and he has entered some fun runs-in fact he has one one tomorrow!

Wow, I could have written this myself about my son! He is the same way. I wish I had acreage for him to run. He runs everywhere, I wish he would walk sometimes. I need to find a 1 K fun run for him.

My younger daughter both runs and twirls everywhere (and I do mean everywhere) she goes. We tell her she's like a puppy, she runs until she falls asleep! I signed her up for 3 different dance camps this summer (she does ballet and tap - loves to dance) so she can twirl to her heart's content all summer long. (And when she comes home, she will jump in the pool and swim until I make her get out... and then she'll come in the house and run laps... and then she'll get in the bath and swim some more...) A lot of elementary schools have after-school track & field and cross-country clubs - does your son's school? Another thought is to sign him up for soccer. Lots of running there! When you have a kid with limitless energy, play into it, I say! Sports will be a good outlet for a "busy" kid like that!
