5 Year Old Won't Blow Her Nose

We love our Pediatrician but for things like this we take our kids to an Ear,nose and throat Dr. They are up to date on everything available out there for treatment. Yes when it is cold from the heater drying up the sinus cavity you could have little nose bleed but not what you are describing. I also have heard of the Dr. burning the capalarries (however you spell that) in the nose to reduce their size so they won't bleed so easily. On the blowing your nose, all my children have done it at different stages, trying the saline solution in her nose would help break it up and at least make it drip out so she won't get sinus infection! well as to getting her to blow her nose, that can be difficult because it is hard to teach. you could tell her to hold her mouth shut and act like she is going to blow air out her mouth, but not to open her mouth, eventually since it is all connected the air will move up into her sinus' and she will blow her nose, she may also being so plugged up not be able to blow her nose, there may be no room for air up there. I would get some saline solution, they make some specifically for children, and squart, drip some up her nose as often as she needs it, the salt will help break that up and it will flow out of her nose and it will help moisturize her nasal cavity so she at least won't have nose bleeds due to it being dry and irritated. As to the nosebleeds, there is definitely a problem. If she says that her nose hurts, then there could have been some cartilage knocked lose and that would need to be removed. I know there is a treatment where the doctor goes in and basically burns the nasal passage, and this cuts off the capillaries that cause it to bleed, this may be an option for her and you might want to talk to the doctor about this. But you need to demand for someone to find out what is causing the nosebleeds, when her nose is tapped and starts bleeding that is a problem, it is not just from being too dry there is something wrong. Demand answers.

You need to check out something called 'Nose Frida'. It's from Sweden and it's made to suction out mucus through a tube (it sounds gross, but it's really not!) Google it online and you'll see what I'm talking about. It took 2 people to hold my son down to suction his nose with one of those suction bulbs, but this device was amazing! Not only did it work well, but it doesn't invade the nostril, it can't hurt them and it's easy to clean! If your daughter has a sensitive nose this would be perfect. My brother turned my onto it, and it's been a life saver with cold/allergy season! Good Luck!

I would request a referal to an allergist for her allergies, it is no fun having to suffer....and constant drainage can cause other problems.... Also, I would ask the doc to do a sinus Cat Scan...so you all can find out what is really going on in there. If they aren't taking you seriously I would try to find someone that would!
I read online that some people physically cannot blow there nose....she just may be soo congested and blocked it may not be possible... By the time they are 5, they should be able to do it, unless there is a medical prob, imo.

Has the doctor looked at her tonsils...I was having the same issue somewhat with the breathing and occasional nose bleeds. The doctor finally suggested that I get my tonsils out...Dr. Alan Brill is an excellent nose and throat doctor..Let me know if you need his number.

Until i broke my nose when i was 9 i couldn't physically blow my nose either. I had to have surgery for the break and when the dr was in there he opened my nasal passages and wala! i could blow my nose. I also had terrible allergies and had to get shots twice a week so i can really sympathize with her. Get another opinion I would recommend trying a dr in Athens thats where I take my kids and there are some really good dr's there and it not that far of a drive. Don't stop till u get the answer u need your instincts won't steer you wrong. Good luck and let me know how it goes!!

B. this probably won't help but about your daughter not being able to blow her nose there really might not be anything wrong with her nose. Up until I was in my late teens I really couldn't blow my nose. I know how but still til this day I just can't blow it very well, it's like I can't get enough air forced through to make any difference and that might be the same problem for your daughter. About the infections and nosebleeds I only say to you that you know your daughter better than anyone and if a pediatrician won't listen to your concerns and look closer into the problem it's time to change doctors.
