Hello! We just started my 7 month old on baby food. (Really we started at 4 months but he wasn't ready so stopped and started again about a month ago) We started with rice/oatmeal and then went to veggies. He didn't do too bad with veggies until we started on yogurt and fruit. Now, everytime he eats a veggies he starts to gag and will not eat anymore. This is ANY veggie. He also is cutting teeth too and has ALWAYS had some feeding/milk problems since he was born. I am giving him store bought baby food. My first boy LOVED anything to eat so this is new.
Any ideas on how to get him to eat more and like veggies more?

What can I do next?

Teething always can effect their eating. Do not give him yogurt or fruits for a while now. Try veggies like sweet potatoes or even making your own with flavor as those baby foods are pretty nasty and bland. He liked the flavor and sweetness which is so normal, however mix the cereal and the veggies together for him, so it has more texture. Him gagging is pretty normal too for that age. I used to mix sweet potatoes and any of the veggies in with the oatmeal or rice cereal and my kids liked it a lot better then just plain.
Hold off on the sweetness until he will mix it up. I used to do veggies mixed in cereal first, then as a "dessert" yogurt or fruits afterwards. Exposing him to spices and flavors younger will help him in not being so picky later on too.

Make your own baby food! It tastes so much better, and you can mix in things you know your baby likes. My son didn't like green beans at first, but loved sweet potatoes, so I'd mix the two, adding less and less sweet potatoes every time. Fruits are okay to give him instead of the veggies. If he doesn't seem to be interested in vegetables at first, just give him the fruit. He will eat when he's ready.

For the teething, freeze chunks of banana and give it to your baby to chew on. It relieves the pain, and he is eating something!

Hi Lisa,

Same thing happed to me, my daughter ate veggies just fine until we gave her fruit and then it was all over and she would gag (sometimes gag so hard she would throw up) so I did 2 things I would put veggies on the back of the spoon and fruit on the front (looked gross and kinda odd thing to do but it worked), I also mixed veggies in her cereal and she would eat them that way just fine. I also figured out that she loved sweet potatoes and squash (guess they kinda are sweet) so I would give those to her right out of the jar. Just remember its just a phase and will pass, pretty soon he will be eating other food that are better tasting and foods that have veggies mixed in and he would never know the difference if he was eating veggies or not. Hope I help-good luck! C.

They say that you're not supposed to give them fruit or any sweet foods until they're well established with veggies and not so good tasting foods. Once they taste the sweet yummy fruit, why would they want spinach? I'd stop the sweet stuff for awhile and he'll get the idea. You also might try some of the varieties that mix fruits and veggies...apples and sweet potatoes...I can't really remember the combos (my youngest is now 2 1/2) but I know they have quite a few flavors. I also made my own baby food. It's not hard, you can make a big batch and freeze it in ice cube trays so you have individual amounts and I'm sure it tastes better than the best store but food. Good Luck.
