7 Year Old Having Continuous Knee Pains Since 2 Years Old.

My son Teagan has been having these pains in his knees. We originally thought of growing pains, but this has been going on for 5 YEARS. Sometimes he doesn't complain of pain for months at a time, other times it is 2-3 times a week. Almost always at night and it even wakes him up in the middle of the night. He really cries hard in pain and can't or doesn't want to walk. We give him tylenol and usually within about 5-10 minutes he is ok again. He is small for his age and 2 years a go we were bringing him to an endrocologist for that, but he said that shouldn't affect his knees... ANY suggestions on what we should do? I feel so bad for him.

What can I do next?

Dear A.,

Growing pains are very painful as you well know. I struggled with them as a child, but my mother did not knnow what to do. My daughter now struggles with this. The best natural solution I have found is to use chewable calcium/magnesium as a supplement. As the body grows, it has an increased need for these minerals. They are also calming, so it helps her to calm down so that she can sleep. If I do not have any chewable on hand, i use my calcium/magnesium supplement, crush it in a mortar and pestel, and feed it to her in applesauce.

It is best to address the source of the problem (increased need of nutrients), rather than treat the symptoms (pain).
Please note that it is important to use quality supplements, rather than syntheic. If you need any recommendations, please contact me.

I believe that it is "growing pains". Unfortunately it lasts for years. It usually comes at night, because that is when the body does its growing. Although, it may feel like it is in the knees, it usually has to do with the hips. The reason I know, is because my daughter has suffered the same as your son. I know exactly how you feel. It is so hard watching them scream with pain. You are doing what you are suppose to do. Give him tylenol, and rub his leg, to kind of rub it out. That is all you can do. The good news is after 10 years of age, it does diminish. The size of a child doesn't matter. Some kids have the unfortunate pleasure of dealing with these "growing pains", and some kids don't have to deal with it, at all. I had never heard of, nor experience the situation, until I had my daughter, and she suffered with it, just like your son. My suggestion is, wherever he spends the night, like at grandma's house, or at a cousin's house, etc..be sure to send the tylenol, because you never know when it will flare up. Sorry you have to deal with this.

I would take him for xrays of his hips. I know it sounds weird since he has knee pain but at his age there is a condition that affects the hips that actually presents as knee pain and hurts the worst at night and no amount of tylenol will help.

My daughter is 3 and has had the same problem since about 1.5. We took her in and had countless test done on her. They thought she might have Juevinile Rheumatory Arthritis (sp??) But she stopped complaining for a couple of months so I cancelled her specialist appt. But it came back again. I would ask your doctor to check into it. You can read more about it at mayoclinic.com
Hope this help and that it is only growing pains. but it never hurts to check!

Hi,

I'm very interested in the replies you receive. My 4 year old has been complaining of knee pain (and more often lately) in the past 6 months or so. When I ask him exactly where and to show me, he usually points to his knees and once in a while to his shin. My husband and his dad have chronic shin pain and have had it all their lives. We have never figured out what is the cause for it. I believe my son is going down the same path and I absolutely hate having to see him like that. He always has knee pain when he is very tired or has been doing a lot of physical activity or has not slept well at night. These are usually the same circumstances under which my husband's shins hurt as well. I plan on talking to my doctor a bit more about this. I would appreciate it if you could tell me anything that you learn.

Good luck.
Aarti.
