How can i get my 7 yr old to pass a bowel movement? He keeps locking his legs and tighting his butt cheeks together to keep it in instead of letting it come out... I tried everything the doctor told me down to giving him a Glycol Oral Solution, plenty of fluid, fiber, grains, he dont eat no kind of meat, i stop giving him cheese, peanut butter, milk which those are his favorites food to eat which started his problem with using the bathroom... But resently he started holding his bowel, he said he dont like how it feels when it comes out, so thats why he keeps it in. From this he also caught a bad bad bad rash on the enter part of his butt and the outside of his butt cheeks tried grease, fugus cream for around his rectum area called Mupirocin, and Nystatin for the rash... The longer he hold it in the worst the rash gets and it speading on the cheeks of his butt.....LIKE I SAID TRIED EVERYTHING INCLUDING THE DOCTORS HELP PLEASE TRYING NOT TO FRUSTRATED, will do anything to get my baby better ontop of that trying to be very patient cause i dont like that hes feeling so bad...

What can I do next?

He's 7, so you should be able to reason with him.

Talk to him. Get a book on anatomy and explain to him WHY we NEED to poop. And buy a canister of the individually wrapped prunes (we called them 'big raisins'). When my boys didn't want to go, I'd give them two "big raisins," and a cup of yummy, sweet, creamy coffee. The combo always yeilded results.

For the rash...try Desitin.

If he still doesn't go after that, it's time to talk to the pediatrician about a therapist.

There's plenty of moms posting here with all the medical information about getting things moving along.
But to me there's something else going on. He said he doesn't like the feeling when he poops - to me it sounds like it hurts him. Is there any, even slight possibility, that he could have a more serious medical problem or that he could have been sexually abused? (Are there any older unrelated men in his life? Step father, boyfriend of an older sister, man next door - anyone who ever spends time alone with him?) Even if there's a really, really, really slight chance of those you need to get him checked out.

There's also a psychological side to this - that he's trying to control this part of his life. He's 7 and may not want mom meddling around his p****** p****. Boys this age are notorious for not wiping well and having a rash. My son was the worst at that around this age and I always asked him - doesn't your butt hurt?

Get alot of fresh fruit - cantaloupe works wonders!

Best of luck mama - this parenting stuff is not easy!

Take him to the ER. The rash isn't good and should be checked. It could be anything from yeast infection, food allergy, to MRSA. So don't mess with that.

Secondly, he probably needs an enema to get things going. While you could do that at home ( be sure to get a pediatric dose) considering he is complaining of severe pain, he could have a severe blockage or worse and this can be deadly if left unchecked. Doing an enema without a doctor's recommendation at this point might worsen the situation if blockage is the issue. The only way to know if he has a blockage is to get an x-ray done.

I work with kids that have special needs and your son has something that one of my clients has. I do not think that your son has Autism, but he may have a sensory issue. Especially since you say he does not like how it "feels." Some sensations to people with sensory issues can be like nails on a chalkboard. I would suggest an Occupational Therapy Evaluation with someone who is knowledgeable about Sensory Integration Disorder. They can work with him on desensitizing activities and exercises so he can cope with the sensation and overcome it. My one client hold onto it all day and only goes when his body can't hold it anymore. I know...TMI...but that is how he goes. For him, it is a sensory thing. His parents use miralax as well.

Sounds like you are doing the right thing by talking to his doctor. Have him/her refer him to an OT.

I would make a doctor's appointment for him. He needs to understand that going poo is as natural as breathing. Hopefully either the doctor or a nurse can explain it to him.

give him a suppository I had to give them to my son when he was little. They helped a lot. And for a rash get Boudreaux's Butt Paste. It's wonderful stuff.

Feed him lots of fruits and vegetables! Also, did your Dr. recommend a stool softener so that going to the bathroom won't hurt so much? Call and ask the Dr. about appropriate stool softeners for kids. I am a teacher, not a medical professional. Good luck!

How long has it been since his last movement? Anything over 5 days can cause internal problems. I have taken my 5y to the ER one night because she was on day 5 and fighting it. They gave her 2 suds enimas.

Now we have a doctor prescribe regimine of Miralax. Given 1x a day in some chocolate or strawberry milk. It is not addictive. It just makes the softer and easier to go.

Have you spoken to the doctor about the rash? He may need an antibiotic.

Both of my kids went through that, although at a younger age. Our pediatrician told us that holding in bowel movements can cause MAJOR problems down the road, and advised us to get the situation under control immediately. He recommended mineral oil - about 2 tablespoons of it in a small glass of orange juice (if the child won't take the oil by itself). Then, stay close by a bathroom, because he WILL have a bowel movement after that! Once he has pooped, then you need to keep him regular using Miralax for a few weeks until he is over the issue of not wanting to go. (Miralax is not a laxative, it simply makes the poop softer so it doesn't hurt to go.) Also, our doctor said to lay off the heavy fiber for a bit, because fiber tends to bulk up the poop, and a child in this situation doesn't need any more bulk in their bowels. He should eat fruits and vegetables, but don't go overboard with fiber supplements or anything. Incidentally, for both of our kids, we found that a sensitivity to dairy foods was causing their constipation problems. We laid off the milk and cheese, and the problem went away long-term.

Anyway, that's what we did, and boy, does mineral oil ever solve this problem! Ask your doctor about it and see if he will approve this for your son. We were told that if the mineral oil did not solve the problem, the next step is an enema, which I thought sounded pretty traumatic for a young child! :(
