9 Month Old Wheezing

My 9 month old has been wheezing for almost 2 weeks. This happened about 3 months ago and the 1st time I took him to the doctor he only got to see the nurser practitioner (dr was out of town) and she said his chest sounded fine and sent him home. The wheezing didn't stop and a few days later he ran a fever. I took him to urgent care. They gave him a liquid breathing treatment and antibiotic and it was gone within a few days (they said it was never in his chest).
This time (several months after the previous incident) I gave him some of the leftover breathing treatments and it still didn't stop. Last Tuesday I took him to Urgent care. The doctor said it had settled into his chest and he could have gotten pnuemonia within a few days. This really scared me of course. He gave him a different treatment (Azithromycin). The medicine was gone as of last night and he is still wheezing. So since I am now terrified of him getting pnuemonia my husband took him to the doctor today. The doctor said he sounded fine and gave him a breathing treatment (the same one he had 3 months ago). I am very scared about him still wheezing. Has anyone else experienced this with their child and how do you know if its close to pnuemonia????

What can I do next?

My son was born in Nov. 2006. He had to have breathing treatments three times a day due to respiratory infections. He hated them and they medication made him agitated and fussy. The Doctor told me that he would probably have Asthma when he got older. This was a really big concern for me so I started to research. I found a company online that sells non-toxic household and personal care items. So I got rid of all the toxic products out of my house like, laundry supplies, dishwasher soap, bath and body soaps and lotions, toothpaste, etc. Everything! I did this in Sept. 2008 and he HAS NOT HAD ONE TREATMENT since! In fact, none of my three kids has even been sick since I did this. My 5 year old suffered from eczema and her skin is all cleared up too! My doctor was even so impressed he asked me what I did so he could share it with other patients. Wow!

I am so blessed to have found this company and it was SO easy and not expensive at all (I mean how much is your child's health worth anyway?) If you'd like me to share with you how I did it, let me know! It's a lot to type here!

Good luck with everything and I hope to hear from you soon!

first thing that jumped out at me: when this began (the 2nd time around) you gave him some of the leftover breathing txs. Please, next time, check with the dr before giving any meds! Your at-home diagnosis & remedy masks the actual symptoms & does not present an accurate picture of what's going on when examined by the doctor. I apologize if this offends you.

2ndly: the Azithromycin is a powerful antibiotic. You take it for 5 days (usually) & then it remains in your system for another 5 days. Treatment is not considered complete until the 10th day. Both children & adults have been known to require more than one round of antibiotics for some cases - whether it be ear infections, strep, bronchitis, pneumonia.

As for the wheezing: you can have wheezing without pneumonia. I consistently get bronchitis/pneumonia each winter. Sometimes it's due to a common cold/allergies....sometimes it's due to a virus. Regardless of the cause, I usually run a lowgrade for weeks with this. I also experience body aches, extreme fatigue, & general malaise. I know that when those symptoms start, then it's time to hit the dr for antibiotics. I use an inhaler as needed for allergies, but sometimes require actual breathing txs to powerkick my lungs.

I like what one of the other posters said about eliminating allergens in the house. I know what triggers me, but with babies ....sometimes it's hard to determine! So look around- get those stuffed animals away from your son, think about if dust is an issue (for me, it's the fireplace), don't self- diagnose/medicate your child, & be prepared for more than one round of antibiotics. Hope this helps.

I have 9 mos old triplets and about 1 month ago they all got RSV!!! when the 1st one got sick, he just woke with a lil cough and by bed time he was wheezing so bad I rushed him to ER, they did x-Rays and he had phnumonia - that quick!! So the next day the other 2 woke up wheezing I got them to the doc the following day and he checked all 3 babies and they all had RSV, which the wheezing sounded worse in the 2 than in the 1 that had phnumonia. So I learned that phnumonia can set in quick and it doesn't always sound terrible, my baby didn't even run a fever and he was perfectly happy, just couldn't hardly breathe.Phnumonia is tricky, be careful

I'd make sure he doesn't have asthma, or a food allergy. Do you notice when you feed him something that may cause his symptoms more often? You are doing a great job by keeping after the doctor. Did they check his nasal passages to make sure he hasn't stuck something up his nose? Good luck and best wishes!

I have had a little scare with both pneumonia (my son was 9 months) and wheezing (my son's came with bronchiolitis when he turned 1) but not at the same time. With the pneumonia did they do an xray to determine so? Also if the pneumonia was caused by a virus then antibiotics won't help get rid of it, it just has to go away on its own. Only bacterial pneumonia can be cured with antibiotics. So maybe her pneumonia was viral and it hasn't completely gone away yet. Also when my son was wheezing I couldn't here it unless I put my ear up to his chest. If it truly is wheezing you will here the whistle only when she breathes out not in. So try putting your ear up to her chest (it is easier to listen through their back not front) and listen for the whistle when she breathes out. If you don't hear it in her chest, it could just be due to congestion in her nose and upper air ways. I found out my son had pneumonia because Care Now did an xray, had I took him to his pediatrician she probably wouldn't have done an xray. If you are still worried I suggest take her to an allergy and asthma pediatric specialist...if you live in the DFW area Dr. Kaushik is a good one. Also one more thing, a nurse told me that the majority of the time a child with pneumonia will run a fever.

sounds more like bronchiolitis. my son started this at 3 months and had a constant cough until he was about 15 months old. then was more seasonal and as he got older he had asthma. Bronchiolitis is like asthma but they don't like to diagnose babies with asthma because they can grow out of it within a few years. Sometimes it's seasonal allergies that cause the wheezing too. Getting him out in the cold to go to the doctor usually makes them feel better to the point the doctor doesn't hear any wheezing. That happened to us so many times where he was wheezing really bad then once we got to the hospital he was fine and they didn't think we knew what we were talking about.

Did they give you a nebulizer to use? If you get one and can use it 3-4 times a day with albuterol, you wiill be amazed at how much it helps. They didn't give us one until our kid was about 8 years old but when he was a baby we would have to take him to the doctor every week or 2 for a treatment. I think they mainly did this so they could keep up on the situation better because they were trying to figure it all out too. He had several chest x-rays done which seemed like torture for a baby. I hated putting him through that. He never did get pheumonia but had that cough for over a year and mostly at night. I had a baby monitor so I could hear him breathing as he wheezed too and it got to the point that I was so used to hearing him breath like that..when I didn't hear him I would jump up out of bed and check on him to make sure he was breathing.

I would find a doctor that specializes in asthma more and see what their opinion is. If you are in KC area, Dr Dattel at KC Pediatrics specializes in asthma.

After someone takes a shower take your baby in the bathroom and let him breath in the steam. That helps too. Pat his back from his lower back up to his shoulder blades with a little pressure. This helps loosen it up and get him to cough it out.
Don't give him suppressant cough syrups. That just keeps him from coughing up all that junk and suppresses it into his lungs which isn't good. People with asthma aren't supposed to use cough syrups that are suppressants. They need to say expectorant but there are few out there that aren't suppressants even cough drops are suppressants.

Hope your little guy gets to feeling better. Keep him away from smoker's even people that smoke and have the smell on their clothes can irritate him. Also wood burning heat is bad for him too.
