9.5 Month Old Weighs Almost 23 Lbs

My son was 8 lbs 6 oz when he was born. He lost more than usual in the hospital after he was born due to some complications. He then stayed around the 50th percentile until he was 3 months and had to have surgery. He then dropped to the 20th percentile. At his 9 month check up, he is now at the 70th percentile weighing 22 lbs 9 oz and 28 1/2 in tall. He's a big boy, but not fat in any way. Is he too big? Each day he usually eats 25 - 30 oz of formula a day, oatmeal twice a day (4+ tbsps each) and 2.5 - 3 containers of 2nd Foods veggies/fruit. Am I feeding him too much?

What can I do next?

My son is about the same age and weight and only on breastmilk! His pediatrician says he's very healthy. I imagine that when he starts walking and running he will not gain as quickly.

You are not feeding him too much. My 9 month old daughter eats about that much, too and weighs less. In fact it seems about exactly right including the formula ounces.

I wouldn't worry about it unless he develops rolls of fat. My son was 23lbs at 4 months and 28 at 1 year. He is now 5 and tall and thin - not a lick of fat on him. But, he was heavy that first year.

Babies are really great at regulating their food intake. It's natural for them. They do not have eating disorders at this age. Don't worry about his weight. As long as you aren't feeding him empty calories, weight gain is good. He will go through several fluctuations with growth spurts.

Don't look at the growth charts either. Those are just general measurements based on a population of children. All kids are different. My daughter is 95th on height, 50th on weight, and 25th on head circumference. She is all over the place!

Trust your doctor. If there was a concern, your doctor would tell you.

He is fine! At 9 months he should be drinking a minimum of 24 oz of formula. Don't let anyone tell you any dofferent. He will let you know when he is full. Right around this time he should plateau. Sounds like you're doing a great job as a mommy! If I were you I would make sure he is eating plenty of veggies and fruits rather than the dessserts. They're ok too but it's better to have the good stuff and save the desserts for last. Take care.

Sounds fine. My little guy was 7.7 at birth, and is now 21 months, 34 lbs, 37 inches tall. Not fat at all - solid & beefy, but he's just a big guy. He's been 97+% since 6 months. The other moms have some great advice, and I think if he's able to move around and not truely FAT - beyond baby fat if you know what I mean - than he's just a big kid. :)

He's fine! Both of mine were/are like that! Once he starts walking and moving around a lot his weight will most likely plateau. My daughter weighed almost 10lbs @ birth, and on her 1st birthday she was @ 28lbs and has stayed about the same for over a year (she is 2yrs and 1 month old). I would not worry especially if your pedi didn't bring it up. You are doing a good job!

He will regulate himself with his appetite and when he is full. He will eat when hungry and stop when he is full, period. He sounds fine to me. He may be about to go through a growth spurt. Most kids have a better appetite and gain and then grow a few inches, then their appetite will slack off until the next spurt. At 9 months, mine were starting on table food mashed up in addition to formula. At this stage as long as the foods you are feeding are healthy choices he will do fine. He is fine, don't worry about the percentile. Mine were like that. All my 3 of my boys were 9pounds or more at birth and are barely in the 25% percentile for one kid, and the others are in the 50% now. They are 14yrs (96 lbs), 12 1/2 (106 lbs) and 9 (76 lbs). Height is fine but all have big feet!! So things will work out as he grows. You are not feeding him to much nor is he to big. He is exactly as God intended. And you are doing great.
Blessings,
L.

I think they look at proportions and trends. You need to look at both height and weight. Big guys are probably going to weigh more. You list only weight percentile here so I'm not sure on his height. But to me, he sounds fine.

I had the same concern with my son (at first). My son varies between 90th and 95th for height and about 95th for weight. His weight percentile is always higher than his height. He looked like a little chunk until he got a bit older and started moving. Now he's slimmed down and you can see ribs but he's still in the 95+ percentile. I asked his Dr once if I should be concerned about his weight. She said that he was proportionate. She said he'd probably be a big guy. My bother & uncle were both well over 6" so he's probably going to be like them. Genetics -- go figure.

I would say that unless your Dr is worried, relax. He's still really young and probably hasn't started running around like crazy yet. That's when they slim down more. As far as what he's eating, check with your Dr. They should be receiving the bulk of their nutrition from you or formula. Food's sort of an experiment the first year. If he likes it, great. You probably have a good eater then.

I wouldn't worry. It doesn't seem to me he is eating too much. My son is almost 18 months and weighs around 35 lbs. He weighed 26 lbs. at his 9 month checkup. He has been huge since birth, but the pedi says he may turn out tall and thin. You can never tell this early. Sounds like you just have a big healthy boy.

I would cut back on the formula. It is actually harder for formula fed babies to control their eating as well since they don't have as much control of their food intake early on - they don't necessarily get the best sense of fullness.

I would offer him a lesser amount of formula and see if he asks for more and then try to give him water instead and gradually increase the water. The amount of solids seems perhaps a bit too high as a serving of food at this age is about 1 tbsp - as I recall the baby food jars have 6-8 tbsp (at least). So, you might give him half a container of one or the other (fruit or veggie) at each meal.

My 2nd son was also larger, so I did give him on average 6 tbsp a day at this age.

That all said, each baby is different, but at 70 percentile, he's not at all that large and his size now doesn't necessarily predict his size later. As long as the weight percentile doesn't get beyond the height, you should be fine and follow his cue for feeding - the amounts may be more habit and just the fact that you offer those amounts than him really wanting. Also, at this age, the formula should be given before the solids. The formula (or breastmilk) is still his primary source of nutrients - the solids are just to get him used to the transition that will occur around 1.

From personal experience I'm going to say your son is fine. I have a big boy who was 20 pounds at 6 months. He has always been off the charts for weight and height. Our former pediatrician ran us through test after test and from specialist to specialist looking for issues and there were not any to be found. We were always told he is perfectly fine. My son is just a big boy. His father is tall and muscular.

I would perhaps cut back on the formula but at 9 months I think the solid intake is good.

My doctor told me that once my son who is 11 mos now starts eating more real food which he did around your sons age that we needed to back off the formula some. She told me that he really only needs around 20 oz a day? She said that with him getting water/juice also that she didn't want to give him to much liquid? So he would get three 6oz bottles a day. I don't know if that will help or not but it worth a shot. Also, my sitter only gave him oatmeal/rice cereal once time a day which was at breakfast. I think the rice/oatmeal is fiiling and has good nurtiants so that could be maybe why he is a healthy boy :) But all in all if your doctor isn't worried then I am sure its all just fine! Plus babys go through crazy stages of growing. My son was in the 70th % at 6 mos but went way down when he started crawling and moving a lot! Good luck!!!

Your son is perfect. My seven month old weighs 25 lbs. righ now and is 28 3/4". My first was the same way. He is now 8 and is lean and very tall. That is so great that your son has gained the weight that he has and is the 70th percentile after having surgey. He is a growing boy and boys are larger than girls. Enjoy every minute with your son because they grow up so fast. :)

Hi D.,
As a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, I am thrilled at the growth of your little one! The first year of life is one of growth and development, and it sounds like your little one is doing some catch up growth at this time! I am interested in his surgery at 3 months, just wondering if it was due to some birth complications that you mentioned. His intake sounds good, with his formula being adequate, and something you don't want him to decrease in at this time. I think you should just relax and enjoy this obviously thriving, growing baby boy! If I can help in anyway, just let me know!
Best of everything to you,
S.

He's fine, I have three kids and all have been in the 95 percentile as babies, weighing 9 lbs or more when born. My oldest has always been thick (like me), my second, even though he was a big baby boy (9.4lbs) is a bean pole now (still tall) and my third is 2 still in the 95% on the charts. He's not fat, just solid.
Your son is healthy and you can tell because he's growing and getting bigger. Don't really worry about the charts, look at him, you know you are feeding him good. Babies and kids are pretty good about eating enough to make them full, not over doing it as us adults. When they get full they stop, sometimes we think they should be eating more, how can they be full. Kids like to eat little often, I think as adults we need to eat like them. And even if he gets a little over weight right now, by the time he starts to walk it'll be shedding off. My youngest was so fat I couldn't find shoes to fit him when he started walking, he didn't have much of an ankle but now, you could never tell.
He's fine and you are doing a great job.
God Bless!

I had a primie, and was so worried about her I just kept feeding her, and by her one year check up the Dr. indicated I needed to put her on a diet, that she was way too heavy for her health. So I guess there is a middle ground. Different bone structures weighs more, so I don't know how you go by just pounds, I just think you should be careful not to over feed him,

Sounds like your little man has finally caught up to where he is supposed to be. On average a baby should tripple their birth weight by 12 months. And he is almost there. I have a 7.5 month old baby girl that weighed 6 lbs 14 ozs at birth and now weighs 18.5 lbs. Sounds like he is not over eating either. Probably because of the early complications you got used to seeing him small/petite. But it sounds like he really had a growth spurt after the complications were corrected. Congratulations on your little guy and relax and enjoy him.
