Adoption and Money

I've not adopted but have a many friends who have - one from a pregnant mom here in the US, one adopted 3 sibilings from Russia, a few others babies from China, Russia, South America.

Most have commented that Focus on the Family has excellent resources and beginning points for adoptive families. They are a conservative Christian organziation - but even if that's not your preference, you may still find that some of the information is helpful. I've attached their link below.

Adoption is free if you adopt a child through the foster care system. They have parents only interested in adoption come to get togethers and meet various children. If the family bonds with a particular child they start having other outings with only that family and if it's a good match the family can move froward from there.

If you want to have a child live with you first they can do that through the foster care system and if the child is up for adoption they do that way too.

I have not adopted but we've looked into it some and I've asked a lot of questions. You will probably get better answers from others but I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents anyway. . . . I talked to one adoptive mama and she said they went through either the Lutheran or Presbyterian home and it was much less expensive and they even had a "pay it out" option. Try a state run organization as they would cost less. We did one through the state and it was a a sliding scale. The set up was that we were the foster parents for a set period of time and then you petition the court for the adoption. It took a little over a year for it to be completed. Also check the church run agencies as they may also have some good advice for you.

All in all, Foster to adopt is the way to go. Those are the kids who truly need help.

I have a friend who just successfully adopted 3 siblings through the foster care program. They are very happy!

I also know it's cheaper to go through the state to adopt foster children. HTH
