After School Clubs

Hi, I. -

My almost-13-year old son has social issues as well for similar reasons. Without knowing a bit more about your son and his interests, it's hard for me to make suggestions for after school activities. Boy Scouts? A musical group? My son is involved in a theater group and there he is comfortable, respected for his intelligence, and accepted. I wish I could say the same about school but I can't. I try to encourage him to enjoy on the positive situation he has at theater and consider that to be his social group and just focus on getting good grades at school.

You might try looking into the Boys & Girls Club. I used to go during the summers as a kid and had a blast. I have done some volunteer work in the past year with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach and really like what they have going on for the kids. http://www.labgc.org/Welcome.html

You might also want to look into the Police Athletic League (PAL). This is another resource that I had when I was younger. My brother, sisters and I enjoyed it so much we started bringing friends! Another option is to look into what classes/activities are offered through your local Parks & Recreation program. They are usually run by the city and have free and/or inexpensive classes in a lot of different interest groups.

What part of Los Angeles do you live in? It's a big place. If you live in the environs of West Hollywood I know that the Plumber Park recreation center has some afterschool stuff for tweens, as does San Vicente park. You might also want to look into and after school art class. There's a place on Beverly Blvd near Gardner that offers after school ceramic classes. I'm also pretty sure that LACMA offers art classes for teenagers as well.

Hi I., I think that there are always great resources in our community. If your son enjoys are LAUSD has art program centers throughout LA There is the Canoga Park Youth Art Center, I think there is one in Simi Valley, downtown area. You can call CP and ask them for all of the centers There is the Jr Colleges that offer extension programs for a reasonablefee, such as acting, Pierce is great! There is the Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts - always looking for leaders! I am a Girl Scout leader of 2 troops, and I love the time I have with the children, as well as getting to know my daughters friends better. There is Santa Monica Mountians, free hiking 2nd saturday of the month, Playing a sport - we do soccer - my hubby coaches. Those girls develop great friendships.
