I posted a few days ago about my baby girl who was ill. Well, I took her to the doctor, and they said that she has a mild case of RSV, and thrush. Well, they put her on Albuterol and some antifungal. Well, she refuses to sleep, no naps during the day, and when she usually goes to bed at 8:45, she is now getting down close to 11. And she is also vommiting. Anyone had this problem with the albuterol?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So, I took her back to the doctor today, and come to find out, in addition to the thrush and rsv, she now has an ear infection. Yay!
They said that the ear infection was why she was up ALL night last night, and they switched her from the albuterol to a nebulizer. Thanks so much for everyone's helpful advice!

The albuterol will definetly make her wired. They gave that to my son when he had pneumonia one time and we were up literally all night long. He was so exhausted but couldn't get his little body to calm down to sleep.

Have not had vomiting with albuterol but it is a side effect. It can also make you jittery and can make you feel like your heart is racing. I would ask the pediatrician about changing her from Albuterol to Levalbuterol. The side effects are usually less with the levalbuterol. Two of my children have asthma and have been on both albuterol and levalbuterol intermittantly since about 4mos old. You might ask the pediatrician for medication for acid reflux and the might help the vomiting also. The antifungal could also be making her sick to her stomach. If it is Nystatin or Mycostatin mouth swish (yellow in color) it tastes terrible. You can try GENTIAN VIOLET found at pharmacies for her mouth. I used it instead of the Mycostatin. It was a fight to get the mouth swabbed with that nystatin stuff. Be forewarned that the violet will stain her mouth purple and anything else it touches or that she drools on. If you are breast feeding also put it on your nipples or you guys will just keep passing the thrush back and forth. BTW thrush is a yeast infection of the mouth. You might want to check her hiney and other crevices for rash and treat with over the counter vaginal yeast cream. DO NOT put anything in the babies vagina. You would use the cream as a topical skin medication only, like for diaper rash that won't go away. All my babies had severe cases of yeast, as I guess that I am a yeasty person.
Hope that helps. For the record in addition to being the mother of 3 boys I am also an R.N.

Probiotics. Please check into getting your baby on Probiotics especially if she has thrush and ear infections,. It's just a yeast overgrowth. Nystatin was given I believe? well, there are a few great powdered probiotics at the healthfood stores in the refrigerator section. Get to Herb Mart in Plano, they can really help. Her intestional tract may be messed up because of all the fungus and yeast. It's really easy to solve without all of the meds.

Albuterol is usually given with asthma and can make you not nervous inside which will keep you from sleeping. The thrush keeps them from eating because it is so painful. Just make sure the thrush medicine be given just as the doctor instructed otherwise it will just get worse. I hope this information helps.

Bethany -
My son is asthmatic and has been on albuterol since he was 2 months old. I've never heard of vomiting associated with albuterol. I would say that something else is causing that and that you should take her in to the doctor. You can go onto WebMd online and look up albuterol as well as RSV. There's a lot of info on there. It does say that RSV is EXTREMELY contagious!
Good Luck!

I will say that the albuterol is possibly contributing to her not sleeping. When my son was on it at 18 months, he was LITERALLY 'bouncing off the walls' from it. I would ask if there was something else she could be given.

The Albuterol does have a stimulant and may be causing him to be restless; don't know whether it has vomiting as a side effect or if that is the RSV. Check with your pediatrician.

That's definitely the albuterol. You might ask if they can switch you to Xopenex, we had MUCH better luck with that.

Hope she feels better soon - RSV is scary!

Being a certified pharmacy tech. and having to go through the same thing when my daughter was 15 mo. the albuteral is a stimulant and will make them very hyper or very drowsy. If they get hyper, they will usually take a nap right afterwards and also the vomitting is a side effect, but if your concerned don't hesitate to call the doctor. Once they rsv clears up and the treatments stop she will return to her normal behavior and as far as the thrush, the medication should have nothing to do with what's going on with her. Your doing great by keeping such a good eye on her and I'm sure she will be fine. God Bless!

I have asthma and know what albuterol can do to ones body. It is a stimulant and makes you feel very gettery (sp?). Which is why i use my nebulizer instead of my inhailer for that reason alone. my nebulizer treatments dont me feel so hopped up.

If she is vommiting I would take her back to the Ped to get checked up...this shouldnt be occuring.
