Almost 3 Year Old Girl with Itchy Bottom

Hello-

I am the mother of an almost 3 year old girl that has been complaining about her bottom itching for 2 months now. It is right between her two butt cheeks going up to the top of her bottom. We've been to her doctor twice now and he is stumped. Both times he's given us a dose of the pinworm medication even though we've never seen anything to indicate pinworms but he was grasping at straws. He said to put hydrocortisone cream on it but doesn't seem to be doing the trick any more. We have been potty training for a month now and wearing Pull-ups. We switched from the Dora kind to the princess kind since that was the only new thing we could come up with that had changed in her life. I've never heard of anyone being allergic to Pull-ups before and think she'd be itchy all over not just the back area. Anyone have any ideas of cause or treatment?????

What can I do next?

Hi, I'm K.. I don't know if this will help at all, but I'll give it a try for you. My 5 year old was having an itchy bottom... and his upper back legs, etc. I switched laundry detergent and he has had no problems since. Dreft is an option- but very pricy. I bought something called "simplicity" and it is hypoallergenic and non-toxic, and not as spendy. He has had no itching since. I didn't tell him nor his father that I made this switch, but no itching, and his father notices it now, too! Maybe she is having some allergic reaction to the laundry detergent. It's worth a try. I hope this helps for you. Good luck!!

Wow, I have a two year old grand daughter and we went through the same thing . We even switched from Dora to the Princess pull-ups you buy at CVS. the itching did not stop.. so I decided to try a little diaper rash cream mixed with vaseline on her backside. I also stopped putting her on the snap in between legs PJ's and T-Shirts because I think these were irritating the pull-ups. It's been about three-weeks now and we have not had a single back-side itch.

hi my name is okema and am the mother of 2 little girls. with my 2nd daughter who is 2 we have had a lot of diarper area problems. my daughter has had several yeast infections but only on the outer part including the but. with your daughter being 3 you can use over the counter vagasil. my aunt who is a nurse told me that it can be used on girls as young as 2 which i did have to do with my older daughter when she was 2 1/2 which she is 6 now. try and and see if it works. if not talk to your doctor about yeast infections.

My husband unfortunately has an incontinence problem and uses depends and has the same issue. The itching is caused by moisture being trapped and causing the skin the chaff. My youngest son had the same problem with disposal diapers. I would suggest trying cotton training pants, yes I know they aren't as convenient as pull-ups but it will solve the itchy problem and maybe she will potty train quickly.

My almost 3 year old had something red going all the way up her crack. I put aveeno bum cream on it and it cleared up. Do you think it could be a yeast infection in that area? Otherwise I have no idea...I hope it gets better.

This happened to my six year old daughter as well. She never appeared red or anything, but would say her butt hurt and was itchy; she'd actually be almost frantic. I'm going to second the lotrimin-the actual one for athlete's foot-as well. My ped recommended this too. We also put a dusting of baby powder on as she didn't like the "slimy" feel of the lotrimin, and we let her sleep with no undies on, just so things can "air out". Wet toilet wipes are great for making sure they're getting clean too. On another note, you might want to make sure she doesn't have a bladder infection. This was the case for us once too. She never complained about anything but this horrible itching; turned out to be a UTI. Good luck and hope things get better!

Since you state she's had this itching between her butt cheeks in her cleft for the past two years--right around the time she would have started eating table foods and cereal on a daily basis--I would have her tested for Celiac Disease. She might not actually have Celiac disease; she might have Gluten Intolerance. Either way, itching skin manifestations (to include that area; I know, I have it, along with hemmorhoids, fissues, etc.) usually tend to point to a food culprit.

Does she have diarrhea, constipation, or alternating diarrhea and constipation? Does she have other skin rashes or break out in different areas of her body? Losing hair? Canker sores in the mouth? Slow growth, short for her age, seems to always eat but doesn't gain (i.e., is skinny as a stick)? Does her tummy hurt, or is it bloated/distended, with maybe rumbling sounds? Does she pass a lot of gas? Does she get colds or infections easily, then have a hard time getting rid of them? Does she crave carbohydrates (bread, pasta) and/or sweets? Does she like or hate meat (protein)? Does she vomit after eating? Have a lot of tummyaches? All of these questions could point toward gluten intolerance/sensitivity, celiac disease, or other food intolerances.

Break outs on the skin are one of the biggest tip offs that something going into the body isn't liked by the body. If her Pediatrician won't do anything to find the problem, I'd seriously take her to see an Integration Doctor (an alternative medicine doctor who holds a medical degree but straddles the line between conventional medicine and alternative/homeopathic medicine). I had to break down and take both myself and my daughter to see an Integration medicine doctor. Right now, we're still testing. However, she's found so many problems already, she's already earned her sainthood, in my book. ;)

Keep us posted.

my granddaughter is allergic to pullups. Diapers never bothered her but she would get a horrible rash with the pullups.. we went to panties with rubber pants over it, a bit messier but worked really good on the potty training, she didn't like the feeling of the wet panties.

I would have to agree it could be poop and or toilet paper that's not getting wiped away. Some people as well as kids are sensitive to toilet paper too. Have you tried using the wet wipes or switching brands of toilet tissue?

It could be yeast infection. Try using Lotrimin to her bottom three times a day. It is ok to use the generic cream as well- a lot cheaper. You will find Lotrimin in the athletes foot isle at Target.

Good luck.

My son used Easy Ups first and then when we used night time huggies Pull Ups he broke out in a red rash all over his back side. It was because the pull ups don't hold the wetness away from the skin, so the combination of the materials mixed with urine made the reaction. So we stopped using them and the itchy rash went away.

It is probably the diapers. THere are massive amounts of chemicals, narcotics, bleach ,etc in disposable diapers... that smell they have when you open the package and open a new diaper, thats the chemicals. I'm sure its probably that.

If you want to train her, put her in underwear. Pull ups are an expensive diaper, not good for training.

Perhaps she is having a problem with yeast? If that is the case, perhaps some probiotic might be helpful. Also, with my girls, if they have an itchy bottom, I use Vita E capsules...or lavendar essential oil diluted with some vegetable oil at night before bed. If those don't work, then Shaklee has a Creamy Baby Oil which works wonders for those type of problems.

I have a three year old, and she's also had an itchy bottom and a sometimes rash on her bum. We used pull-ups at night, and I suspected it was the pull-ups. We actually found the Dora brand (Pampers, I think) worked to get rid of the rash. However, my sister-in-law, whose kids also had rashes, never found a pull-up that worked. She decided to put her kids in cotton underwear with a pull-up on top for sleep at night. Not only did it immediately take care of their rashes, but it also helped potty train them at night a lot faster! I know there could be a lot of different causes for the itchiness, but I also know some kids are allergic to pull-ups. Good luck to you!

Hi C.,

I tried to send you a response once, but it didn't go thru, so I will try again....you might want to try a fungal cream...there are some over-the-counter ones, and you could try them first, but if it helps, but doesn't quite take care of the problem completely there are precription fungal creams that are stronger. If you would like the name of the prescription one, let me know, and I can get it for you.

a friend of ours found out that her daughter was just sensitive to soap of any kind.

try using only free and clear laundry detergent. have her not use soap to wash her bottom, just warm water - and try giving her only showers not baths. this seemed to help the daughter of our friend.

also, if shes potty trained, make sure she gets her butt wiped good enough. even in adults if we dont wipe and get completely clean, its going to itch. its perfectly ok and helpful to use wet wipes to finish cleaning up.

I'm sure this is obvious and your MD would have said something... But my 3 1/2 yr old has problems wiping herself. Sometimes the smallest amount of poop or even bits of toilet paper gets stuck there. This can be very irritating to her bottom, and although it DOES NOT turn red, she complains of "owies" on her butt. Using a wipe to clean after she uses toilet paper does the trick. Just an idea. Good luck!!!!!
