Hi there, I am writing for some advice from other women who have struggled getting pregnant. My hubby and I have been trying for about 8 month now, and still nothing. In the mean time, I found out I have thyroid issues, so we have been dealing with that because my periods had been so irregular. Finally, I had 2 periods in a row, which was great because I thought for sure I must be ovulating. Now this month I am 6 days late and still no period. My home pregnancy tests say negative, but I have a some symptoms of being pregnant. I was wondering if other moms out there have had false negative urine tests, and how did you finally confirm you were pregnant if so. I hope I am not just over analyzing my symptoms because I just really want to be pregnant! Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hey everyone! I want to thank you for all your advice and personal experiences. I am happy to announce that I am pregnant, and I am 7 weeks along. It took many negative tests before I finally got a faint line on one a few days ago. A blood test confirmed it and we are thrilled!

We tried for 6 months before getting pregnant with this one. I agree with the previous person that when you want it so much, you'll start feeling like you are, even if you aren't. However, I did get several negatives before I got a positive with this one. I was so eager, I tested too early. Try to relax, and not think about it (yeah right) and test again in a day or two.

GOOD LUCK :)

Depending on how early it is, some tests cant tell until you're a month or more along. And some even not then.

I would go to the dr. and get a test done. I had the same problem....monthes of trying before finding out I have Hypothyroidism and Polycystic Ovarian Sydrome/disease whatever they call it these days. My periods were very irregular, sometimes I would have to go get the pills or shot to start my period. There were times when I would be "late" and feel pregnancy symptoms and I would do a test and it would be negative. My dr said that because I wanted a baby so bad, it was like I was convicing myself I had the symptoms. Needless to say...dont give up....after about 8 monthes of clomid I had a beautiful daughter who is now almost 6....and then with my son I got a new dr and he did a combination of tracking my ovulation and some pills that i had to take on wierd schedules...and 3 monthes after those I got pregnant with my beautiful son who is almost 4. It was all worth it.

The first time I was pregnant I had several negative tests. Then a few weeks later I took another and it came back positive. Then I took 3 more and they were positive too. Sometimes in the beginning your hormone levels don't change enough to facilitate a positive reading. Either way you'll know for sure in the next couple of weeks!

I know that thyroid problems can keep you from getting pregnant so it is good you got that figured out. You might want to go get the blood test pregnancy test. My first pregnancy was that way. The home one said negative but the blood test was positive. Home pregnancy tests test at a different level of the hcg hormone. So if you got one that needs 100 hcg level than it might say negative when you are because the hcg level goes up every 2 days. The Dollar Tree dollar store sells pregnancy tests and they test at 25 hcg level. They look just like the tests used at OB offices.

I have the answer (sort of) to this irratic period thing: There is a book called Taking Charge of Your Fertility that is funny (so it's an easy read,) and fully explains how to figure out when you're ovulating. You chart your daily information (temperature when you first wake up, etc...) and YOU CAN TELL! It's amazing! The author is a doctor that helped zillions of women who had paid for infertility treatment, and within 3 months of charting, many, many of them were pregnant.

I HIGHLY suggest it! (She even explained how to more accuratly try to choose a boy or a girl, and it worked! I had a boy & a girl... didn't care on the first one but I wanted the opposite for my second. HAD to have a girl!)

Those tests are often wrong when they say they're negative. It might be a little too early for it to show positive. Don't give up yet. The best way to tell is to go to your doctor and have a test done there. My husband and I tried for a year with no results and when we finally stopped worrying about it, I got pregnant. Just relax and it'll happen.

Good Luck...you'll be pregnant soon.

When I got Prego with my daughter I felt wierd at the first of the month of February....I knew it was a good probability that I was pregnant from January. I took the test on Feb. 4th thinking if I got prego it should show on one of those early response tests which say they can test positive from the time you are two weeks prego onwards. Well it came back negative and my period was due on the 14-15 well I started cramping and hurting like my period was due but nothing happened no period.. no nothing, even though less then two weeks had gone by since the test had said no deal. I took the test again and low and behold it was positive. Bright and glaring. Even though those tests say they can test as early as two weeks into the pregnancy that is usually not the case. Something else you should think about is some women don't produce enough of the hormone that causes those tests to show positive till way later in the pregnancy. I would take it easy. take the precautions you should as if you were and go see the doctor for a in house prego test. If you're not prego don't give up but don't push it either. I have had two of my hubby and I's close friends have the same issue and once they finally gave up on being prego ( one couple had started looking into adoption) they both came up pregnant. So relax. Don't try so hard. Keep telling yourself "It will happen when it does and well.. I'm gonna have as much fun practicing till then". Just remember Relax... Breathe... If ya want someone to talk to you can always email me. ____@____.com. I have lots of friends who have been through exactly what you are going through. I've heard it all.

Treat your body like you are pregnant. Take your prenatal vitamins and drink 10-12 glasses of water a day. Take a nap if you need to (maybe snooze while your boy watches sesame street?) Don't lift heavy objects. Don't wear yourself out. Let your body know that you're ready to be pregnant.

As for the test, wait 2 weeks and test again. I bought really cheap testing kits off the internet. I can't remember the site now, but they sold pregnancy tests w/out the fancy packaging, so It was really cheap - like $2 a test. I think I bought 10 of them!

They also do $5 pregnancy tests at abortion clinics. You don't have to be getting an abortion to go in...just don't tell them that. They pretty much have to offer the pregnancy test super cheap. (this works great when your insurance won't approve an OB until you are for sure pregnant.)

anyway...good luck....

Hello,

6 days late might not be enough to get a positive reading. Especially knowing that your cycles are erratic. The best time to test is with the first morning urine. Give it a couple more days and try it again. I'd also suggest trying an ovulation predictor kit. They are urine sticks - they look exactly the same as the prego tests. They tell you when you are fertile. I was ovulating really early and if it wasn't for this kit I would have never known it or gotten pregnant anytime soon. You can buy them at Target, Walmart, Walgreens - probably any drug store. I want to say a package of 7 sticks was $12 - $15. You can also take your temperature and chart it with a basal thermometer. There is even a website to chart it all on and its really helpful to track your fertility signs and wait to see what your body does in response to a possibly pregnancy. There are moderators and a lot of experienced people who can read your charts, look at your signs and help you figure things out. The website is www.fertilityfriend.com
There is also a really great book that follows this same concept called "Taking Charge of your Fertility"

It is really common for a home pregnancy test not to register positive until a week after a missed period. Where you have been irregular in the past I thing this would be liekly in your case. Personally, I have never had a positive test until at least a full 7 days after a missed period and I have three kids. Good luck and I hope for your sake you really are pregnant.

As long as you followed the instructions correctly, you almost certainly aren't pregnant. However, you could go to your OB/GYN just to make sure.

With my first child, I took an EPT test, which was negative. I felt different, so I tried First Response. It was positive. I had the other EPT stick, so when I was about 6 months pregnant, I peed on it and it came back NEGATIVE!! It was probably a bad test, but we laughed about it. Good luck to you, I wish you well.

Ask your doctor to run a blood test. The urine test you get at the store is just as accurate as the one at the doctor's office. I have a very healthy little baby girl for whom urine tests never showed positive. They read positive at 25, my numbers were 12,000. GL! I hope it happens soon!

You can request a blood test be done, which will tell you definitively if you are pregnant.

With my first child, I had been missing periods for months at a time and was closely watching my ovulation, etc. My dr. had put me on progesterone, but no fertility meds. After having no visible period for three months, I started feeling nausea and a few other pregnancy symptoms. I took a urine test that was negative. I requested a blood test be done (my mother is a medical lab technician and encouraged me to seek one) and my doctor, who was out of the office, gave the ok for it over the phone. When I arrived at the clinic, the staff would only give me a urine, despite my request. It was negative. I went home and still continued to have sypmtoms. A week later, I bought my own home pregnancy test (again) and took it, expecting another negative, but it was positive! I then went to a new doctor (I refused to go back to my old doc with the horrible staff!) who confirmed my suspicions and even did a sonogram to see how far along I was. We suspected that I must not have truly been pregnant during the first tests, but no, I was almost 9 weeks (when I first tested with urine, I was 7)!
There was really no explanation for the previous wrong results as all of my hcG levels were high and my little boy came out just a ball of cute wonderfulness!

Good luck to you. Even if this time, it truly is a negative, don't give up!

Did you know that when you yearn so bad to be pregnant, you can indeed display signs of pregnancy in your body, including late periods, and NOT be pregnant.
I'm so sorry this has been a trial for you. After 1 week of a missed period you should get a blood test from your doctor. Then go from there with your doctors advice.
I had a friend who did not ovulate on a regular cycle. She had been trying for at least 8-10 months. Her doctor put her on birth control for two months to help regulate her cycle and then she when off them and was pregnant the next month.
Another suggestion would be to invest in an ovulation test. They're pricey, but effective.
Good luck with everything.

Hi, I also had problems.Your thyroid causes a big part in getting pregnant. I would discuss it with Your doctor. I was put on Meds for underactive thyroid. I saw a reproductive Doctor. That was how I found out about the thyroid problem. One of my treatments the thyroid was fine I had a boy 16 mo. later they said I had a thyroid disorder. I guess a thyroid can change quickly. good luck with everything! J.

I would really encourage you to seek a blood test. Doctor before last refused to do one when my urine test was negative and diagnosed me with IBS and instructions to come back if I didn't feel better, well long story short when I got tired of being told I had IBS I changed doctors to see what might really be wrong only to find out I was 32 weeks pregnant! All 5 urine tests had been negative even the last one at 5 months. That doesn't surprise me though because I've never had one turn positive before I was out of my first trimester and even then had to depend on ultrasound measurements to deterime due date. Good luck and don't get too discouraged.

Hi A.,
I can really relate to your situation, I too have been trying to have another baby for the last 8 months with no luck, and I also have really irregular periods which makes it hard. I have thought I was pregnant so many times only to be disapointed, so it is best to try not to get your hopes up. You can re-test in a couple of days and see if it is positive. But what you really need to do is to see your doctor and ask about what can be done to help your fertility. I have had to take prometrium to induce a period and clomid to try to ovulate, the pills are not that expencive after insurance. Another thing that you can do without a prescription is to use ovulation test stick which are just like pregnancy tests except they detect another hormone, LH, which surges right before you ovulate. This will help you to know when your best two days to conceive are. Good luck to you and don't loose hope!

I remember a woman on a message board like this said that she didn't get a positive test, even after she had an ultrasound confirm that she was 10 weeks along. Just for fun, she kept taking pregnancy tests, and they came up negative until she was 4 months along! I thought that was an amazing story, so I remembered it.
I figured that wouldn't happen to me, because when I took my first test when we were trying for our first baby, the line turned bright pink within seconds. None of that waiting for 10 minutes!
So I was surprised when my second test was only very, very faint. They were both boys, taken at about the same time. Same brand of test, even. So even though you've done this before, it could look and feel different the second time around.
That reminds me that I felt totally different the second time, too. I had never been bloated in my life, but I was instantly bloated the second time. I didn't know what was going on or why I felt so awful! The second time, I also got implantation bleeding, bad. I thought my period had come early. But when it stopped, my breasts started hurting REALLY BAD and I knew I was pregnant. My first clue with my first pregnancy was slight cramping. I never had that with my second. They were totally different!
Good luck. Let us know what happens!

Hi A.. Urine pregnancy tests can have a high rate of false negatives even if done correctly. My last pregnacy I took the test twice, two weeks apart and they were both negative. Still swearing I was pregnant I went to the doctor and was tested there. I WAS pregnant-with twins! I would make an appointment with your doctor so you can find out for sure and put your mind at ease.

I was pregnant with a tubal pregnancy when the pregnancy test came up negative. When they took a blood sample from me when I was in the ER (I had to have emergency surgery because of it) it came back positive.

I too have thyroid problems, but I didn't find out until I had a child and he was five months old, so that is good if you know before you become pregnant that you do have thyroid issues. Are you taking thyroid medicine? Unfortunatly, you are going to be dealing with thyroid issues for the rest of your life. I'm told the problem never goes away. Good Luck!!

I understand exactly what you are going through. Last year I decided to stop birth control because my husband and I wanted to start. I had two normal periods and then nothing for five weeks. We were so excited, but every time I took a test it showed negative. I was nauseous and had tenderness and still it was negative. Five weeks and I finally had my period. I found out after the third time of missing my period that I am insulin resistant. It messes up my hormones. I'm on medication that helps to regulate my menses, however, even when I miss and feel like I'm pregnant...if the stick says negative it's probably negative. You need to check which level of hormone your particular pregnancy test will register. The lower the level the more sensitive the test is. So even if your body only has a tiny bit it should still indicate. If your still negative go to your doctor and tell them that your having irregular menses...again. They may need to adjust your dosage. Otherwise, if you are pregnant, Congratulations!

well when i got pregnant with my daughter, i had spotting in between and i wasnt sure bout anything till i was like 7 weeks along. my trick is to not thing bout it, dont stress bout it..just do it..the more you think, try, stress bout it..it can and will cause test to be messed up. also, the test..if it is shakin around alot or tossed or not kept in the same temp wich that may be the factorys fault, that can mess up a test to. its mind over matter basically..right now, i can think im pregnant even though im not(not even having sex)..and after a week id prolly feel tired, not feeling good, and very moody... ya see what im saying? so just let it all go away and just relax, after you relax, and do it without concentrating on the getting pregnant part...if it still dont happen..then id c a doctor. just dont think bout the tests, symptoms ect. just do your thing with your man, and when u are late, then check on that. test arnt always right, or wrong.. blood tests are 100% pos. you can tell within a few hrs of being pregnat lol its that good.
i hope you do get pregnant. if not, then you can consider adoption, or what i did...i was a gestation surrogate and had the baby for someone else bout 3 months ago, a great thing... so i hope this all helps! xoxo
