I gave birth to my son 4 months ago and unfortunately, pregnancy left me with a fun new problem: Hemmorrhoids. The doctor gave me a couple of things for this, but it seems to be getting worse. The pain and bleeding are really starting to get to me. Does anyone have any suggestions on alleviating this problem? Am I going to have this for the rest of my life now? Sorry to bring up such an unpleasant topic. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I finally just got over mine and I thought they'd never go away!!! I have been using suppositories, add fiber (metamucil or benefiber or fibersmart) to your drink every night, drink lots of water, add more fruits and veggies to your diet, and it all went away! Seems like so much work to just get rid of a problem, but hey, your body will thank you so much for more benefits. It also helps you shed a few more pounds too!

Hi L.,

Chinese medicine (both acupuncture and herbs) has a good track record for resolving hemorrhoids naturally. The problem is on the systemic level, having to do with the integrity of the capillaries and blood vessels all over the body, and the usual hemorrhoidal preparations don't address anything but the local problem. A well-chosen herbal formula addressing the organs responsible for blood vessel prolapse will go a long way toward making those nasty critters recede and behave, long-term.

I am networked with other practitioners around the U.S. and will help find someone for you if you indicate where you live.

Hi L.,
I too had the same horrible problem after pushing for two hours. My baby is now 16 years old and worth all the pain. It gets better. Lots of hot baths and a rememdy my mom came up with (I don't want to gross you out but would could at this point, eh?) was to put a little anbesol (for toothaches) and vaseline mixed together on that nasty hemorrhoid. It relieved the pain better than any of the other medicines I tried and when I asked my doctor about it he thought it was a great idea. The only other option if they don't go away at some point is to have surgery. Good luck!!

You will be more prone to having them now that you have had them but it doesn't have to get worse. I ONLY suffered after my babies were born and get them on very rare occassion now. I had 4 babies kind of in a row and it was always right after the births. I learned my lesson after my first how to get rid of it faster was to eat plenty of fiber. My baby is now 5 1/2 and I haven't had any problems since right after his birth. Make sure you eat enough good fat, fiber, and drink enough water. best cure.

I am the only one I know who got such bad hems with all three of my pregnancies, even worse after the birth. I used ice packs every 4 hours for at least 1/2 hour intervals. with prep H and tucks pads. I used stool softeners for 4 weeks and chewable fiber tablets every day with fresh fruits and raisin bran cereal for 2 months.and I increased my water intake too because I was nursing as well. after 6 months they finally cleared up. I was almost ready to see a doctor when it finally got better. I thought I was going to get colon cancer or something, but I was fine it is just that you have to give your bowl time to heal and you can't do that with hard stools so take it from someone who can relate. if you are turely taking care of yourself and you still are having problems see a doctor you need to take the best care of yourself for that little boy. good luck

Genetics and pregnancy have given me hemorrhoids. This is what I do: 2 tablespoons psyllium (I buy mine at Trader Joe's--nothing but fiber) every morning with half a cup of juice and half a cup of warm water, then down it as quickly as possible. If you take vitamins, wait a few hours, since the fiber will just flush it out of your system.
Some people take it at night, so they have a bowl movement in the morning; so do what works for you. Just be consistent. And drink lots of water.
I've read that pure oat bran added to food is helpful too.
If it gets really uncomfortable, take a soak in the tub with some epsom salts.
I also use cottonelle or scott moist wipes to make sure there is no residue that could irritate the anal area.
In really bad cases, Preparation H suppositories can be very helpful. I always wondered why my parents kept a pack of them in the freezer...now I know.

good luck

Proctofoam brought some relief, but didn't cure the problem.

Sorry to say...that is part of pregnancy. The only thing that helped was a diet with more fiber...lots of salad....and lots of water...and lots of warm baths. While in the bath...push them back up inside. They eventually go away, but sometimes you have to have them removed. I had 4 babies, my daughter had 2...she had hers removed..never know.

If they are not going away with over-the-counter or prescription medication, it may be necessary to have them surgically removed. Talk to you doctor to see if this is your case. I had them after pushing for a long time giving birth. I did NOT use the ice pack they brought me after I gave birth, because I "felt fine" at the time. Maybe that was my 1st mistake. Mine went away using prep H and the circular wipes, Tucks or something like that.

I know exactly how you feel! I dealt with this problem while I was pregnant. I had tried over the counter remedies and nothing seemed to help. I was in so much pain that I couldn't even sit or walk. It got so bad that I ended up going back to my doctor and he had to remove them. It was done right in his office. Don't try to live with the pain, it will only get worse. I would suggest that you call your doctor back and let him know that nothing is working and se what he says. After 10 years I still have the little buggar, but it's much smaller and has never given me a problem since. I wish you all the best in feeling better, because those darn hemmoroids are no day in the park! Good Luck! J.

These changes have cleared up hemorrhoids naturally for nearly every person I have suggested this to.

4 Collinsonia Root from Standard Process for a couple of weeks - sometimes in just a few days, you'll see changes. Lots of water to make sure you are not dehydrated, so that your stools are easier to expel.

The other thing you might really want to do, is get a small stool and put in under your feet when you are on the toilet. This will help open the pelvic outlet and decrease the pressure on your rectum. Other countries where they have to squat over a hole don't have hemorrhoid problems like we have.

Lastly, Kegel, kegel, kegel....this will strengthen the pelvic floor and you can easily do 20-30 at each red light while you are driving.

Dear L.,

Oh the joys!!! If knowing you are not alone helps, you have plenty of company!!First, keeping regular is really important. Also a trick to avoid the straining is using a stool to elevate your legs a little when your "going" as to lesson the pressure (a trick I learned when I was pregnant)baths with witch hazel, tucks pads...When I was pregnant,I got a thrombosed hemmorhoid!! If you have that it wasn't a big deal to remove at all...They do shrink in time, but in my experience they never go completely away, but are kind of just there.I wouldn't opt for surgery personally unless they were unbearable.I have had 4 family members go through the surgery! If you continue to have heavy bleedig it's important to consult with your doctor!!

Good luck!!!

Hi L. - I dont have much personal experience with hemorrhoids as I had my children c-section, but my husband is prone to them and he swears by Rutin. You should be able to find it at any health store and I believe it is near where the vitamin c is. My husband gets thrombose hemorrhoids and the only other solution for those is surgery...since hes been taking the rutin at the first sign of them he hasn't had a problem in years!

Hi there,
I highly recommend acupuncture treatment that includes diet modification and chinese herbal therapy. I had bad bleeding hemmorrhoids (sp?) on and on for a few years (before giving birth) and this is the only way I got rid of them. I had some problems again during and after pregnancy (even the delivery nurse was surprised how bad it was) but have been able to curtail them with diet and lifestyle.

I totally empathize. Good luck.

Hi L.,

I'm so sorry you're experiencing of this..I totally understand your situation. When I gave birth to my first baby, I had issues like yours. I had discomfort for 3-4 months. I ended up sitting on a donut pillow, that Hoag Hopital gave me, for a few months. I made sure that I drank LOTS of water, ate lots of fruits and veggies. Papaya is a natural laxative and I ate that regularly. I also took aloe pills(can purchase them at Mother's, Whole Foods, or health food store). All these things ensured that I wouldn't have those horrible bowel movements that I experienced the first few days after coming home, after the delivery. I didn't get to try this, but a friend of mine told me that coarsely blending an eggplant and applying that would help heal the hem. She did this for days, until the swelling went down. It sounds bit strange, but she swore by it. I'll get more details and get back to you. If it's getting worse, call your doctor! Girl, I feel your pain...Hope you get well soon!

There is a homeopathic suppostitory made with coconut butter that works wonders! You can get it at your local health food store, it's simply labeled "Hemmorrhoids". Also drink a lot of water. It worked for me right away and they were completely gone in a couple days.

No need for extreme solutions like surgery.

Not a pleasant subject, but glad you asked. When I was pregnant, I had them so bad they were considering surgery to remove them or minimize them. Anyway, a sitz bath is this thing that you fill with warm water and put on the toilet seat. It helps relieve the pain and over time reduce them in size. It's maybe $20 and well worth it. Good luck!

Hi L.,

I too suffered from hemmorrhoids years ago (not related to childbirth, however). A naturapath friend of mine told me to start taking flax seed oil supplements. After about a month of taking them, I no longer had a problem. Because flax seed oil and other fatty acid supplements have a number of other tremendous benefits, I still take the supplements everyday as a part of my personal care (I now take Arbonne's Fatty Acid Dietary Supplement). Give it a try for a month and see if it works for you too.

Sometimes this can be nutritionally connected - to a shortage of trace minerals.
Preparation H is the old stand-by and will relieve symptoms and pain. I probably boosted their sales for years - until I decided to see a specialist (proctologist) and have the surgery, which has eliminated the problem and I wish I had had the surgery much earlier. Some people say the surgery doesn't also work - mine did and it was one of the best things I ever did for myself... so if topical remedies and nutritional supplement don't help (also, be sure you are drinking enough water), surgery was the answer for me.

Hi L., I got them too after the pregnancy. I went thru two processes, I got them banded the first time (literally they take very small tight bands, place them on the hemorroids, blood flow stops feeding them and they eventually fall off. HOWEVER, that did not get rid of them totally, so then I had surgery done, and it still did not get rid of them totally. Mine still flair up when I have a difficult bowel movement. Unfortunately, hemorroids is skin that has separated away from the body and there is no way to reattach it. Good luck. I would recommend surgery, but hopefully the doctor will get them all. Insurance should cover it with a 20% copay of some sort. Check with your insurance. Take care. E.

I too suffered with hems after having a 9lb.9oz D., a 10lb.13oz. son and an 11lb.5oz. son. I had intense soreness and bleeding. Remedy: Use a little Vicks and a little Preperation H, mix together and apply. It burns a bit when you first put it on but shortly after you feel such relief from the pain. It's soothing and cooling and they clear up. It's like MAGIC!!! I still flare up from time to time but go back to my old treatment. Best of luck to you and your new son. Hope this helps. I had these during my 2nd pregnancy and after giving birth that time and they are really miserable. (Unfortunately ever since I have been prone to them but to prevent them I make sure I stay hydrated.) I told my ob/gyn and she gave me prescription suppositories that cleared up the problem. The prescription has a higher level of cortisone (hydrocortisone?) than over-the-counter stuff. Your case sounds worse than mine so you definitely need an Rx. I was really skeeved out about having to insert the suppositories but once I got used to it it got easier and they really did help. If your doc has given you an Rx and it's not helping, make sure you tell him/her. I think there are surgical treatments, too, which also sounds unpleasant but it's worth it to get rid of the hemorrhoids. Meanwhile drink lots of water and take in a lot of fiber to avoid being constipated. That will just worsen the problem. Good luck & feel better!

Hi - I also had them after both my babies. To add to the list of foods to eat -- prunes, prune juice, other prune products to help soften things up. I also got some relief from doing gentle kegel-type exercises to try and squeeze them. Just like kegels, you have to do them every day and many many sets. I think this (along with dietary changes) helped them get smaller and go back to whence they came :-)

Well first and foremost, know that this wont last forever!=) Maybe the dr.'s rx was too strong?? As for remedies I used, I used the preparation H ointment and pads to sooth, and heal. I also used vaseline. I know it sounds kind of funny but that actually helps for "prior to" so that it wont bleed and hurt so bad. I used to cry because it just KILLED me to use the restroom. I can totally relate to your pain. I ended up having thrombosed hemmorroids and had to have surgery to remove them when I was 29 weeks pregnant. I also has internal hemmorhoids that had to be removed. This was the only thing that took care of the problem. The recovery from the surgery was difficult, but it may have also been because I was at the end of my pregnancy and there was so much extra weight on my pelvic area. Definately ask you doctor about your options. My OB suggested taking as many hot baths a day as you can (I know that's difficult with a 4 month old). E-mail me if you want any more info. Good Luck!

I never had them as badly, but I am expecting my second in a month and I've pretty much had the "roid" issue this whole pregnancy. When I went home from the hospital with my first, they told me to fold a "Tucks" pad and leave it on the hemmorrhoids to keep the witch hazel on the problem area. It helps with the pain and the itching. And it helped them go away pretty quickly after delivery.

This time around they are a lingering problem, but I'm hoping after delivery they will go away for good. If it's really bothering you, you might want to bring it up with your Dr. I know sometimes surgery is the best way to alleviate the problem. There are different types of Hemmorrhoids, so there might be better solutions. Sorry you are in such discomfort. Good Luck!

I have also had to back away from sugar, wheat, caffeine(especially caffeine!! )and dairy. I do my best to not eat these foods until the symptoms have healed up. Also, reating is very important. Not sitting , laying down and surrendering to required horizontal time. After you have a BM, elevate your bum for about 10-15 min, helps keep circulaton from getting stuck.

When I had this problem after my first child, my doctor suggested plenty of water and a stool softener as well as hemorroid cream. Within a week I didn't have anymore problems because the stool softener keeps you from putting pressure on the affected area and allow healing.

Hi L.,

I gave birth in the beginning of December & had hemmorrhoids for the first two months. What my doctor recommended (& it worked) was milk of magnesia. It is a stool softener. It does not treat the hemmorrhoids, it treats the problem. Also, the sits bath made them feel better.
Mine did go away. I hope you have the same luck!
