At Home Hair Color - Gilbert,AZ

I have my hair colored all brown by the girl who cuts my hair. It costs approx $60-70. I'm thinking I could color it myself at home since it's all one color (no highlights). I've never done my own color before. I'm just starting to get a few stands of gray (ugh!) so there really isn't much at all. What is a good at home permanent home hair color to use? My natural color is very dark brown and the current color is a medium brown. I'd like to keep the medium brown. Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for taking the time to respond. I'm going to go to Sally's and see what I can get there and give it a shot....right before my next hair appt just in case I need my beautician to re do it. :-)

I colored my hair today and it was't so bad but I wasn't very neat about it. I'm sure next time will go better. I don't care for the color as much as when I pay my beautician to do but the cost savings makes up for it. I'll just get a different color next time. Thanks for the advice and suggestions.

I've done mine at home for years. I used to use the box stuff, which I thought was harsh. I went to Sally's Beauty Supply one day and the staff was awesome. They always help me pick out the right color and developer. Plus it is much cheaper than the box dyes. They are all licensed Beauticians there too.
I use a wide coloring brush to touch up my roots, works great!

I saw an advertisement about eSalon.com and was thinking of trying it. Has anyone here used eSalon? On eSalon, you answer lots of questions....texture of your hair, when was it last colored, what is your natural color, what was your last color, what color do you want your hair to be, etc.... Then a specific color is determined for you. I think the cost is maybe $30 for them to send you this "made just for you" hair color...with detailed instructions and tools for how to apply. I've never done it...and the one hair stylist friend I asked about this told me "don't do it"...but the reviews (the few I have seen) are positive.

Shout out if you have used this eSalon site for hair color.

Take care,
A.

I discovered my first grey hair at 17, I kid you not. After I recovered from the trauma (okay perhaps trauma is hyperbole...) I decided that, if I was going to color my hair, I would pick the color I always wanted. I went from brunette to red and have had medium auburn red ever since. I have mixed my own using wella from Sally's but to be honest, I find it is much cheaper and easier to use the boxed colors from CVS or Target. Warm Medium Auburn by Preference by Loreal has been my color for ... aahhem... decades now and it works great for me. Happy coloring!! :-) S.

I've had my hair done enough times that I thought the same thing-why not? My experience has been the store bought doesn't last as long. Go to Sally's Beauty Salon and pick up your color there. I even got brave and did the highlights with the cap and it turned out great! Good luck and usually Sally's Beauty has a pretty knowledgeable person there to help out the first timers ;()) however just be careful because not all are created equal-lol!

I get mine from Sally Beauty supply. I use Wella as they recommended that brand. You buy the color and the developer and mix them yourself. I also get an add in to help eliminate reddish hues in my hair. The first time you go you will buy a bottle, brush for root touch ups, rubber gloves, the color and a bottle of the developer. Check the add ins to see if you need one. I use 4N which is a medium brown with neutral undertones. I tend to go red so I add the anti red drops. The ladies there are always very helpful and will tell you what you need.

I have use eSalon once, and the color turned out great, but it did not last. But I had bleached my hair before that. The first time is only $4.95 for the shipping,$24.95 after that, every 12 weeks if you use the auto ship. You can change the color if you want. I might try it again in the future. I have been using John Frieda. It has enough to cover all of my hair without having to buy two boxes and it is easy to put on and covers quite well.

If your hair has "red" in it, you will need to use a medium brown ash color.

I use a 5A on my hair, otherwise, I get too much of a "Brassy" color.

***A means Ash

To retain the color, use a shampoo for color-treated hair.

I do not like Loreal.

You can use a root touch-up kit if you don't have much gray. Purchase the medium brown color and just touch up the grays---It's pretty simple. I bet you can watch somebody applying a touch-up kit via You Tube.

I color my full head once a year. Every 6 wks, I do my roots.

Every other month, I use a deep conditioning packet to keep my hair from frizzing.

ive tried so many.. my favorite has to be garnier.. its the only one ive ever used that doesnt make my hair feel like straw! and its not as intense smell wise.. some of them smell so bad they make you almost dizzy .. it has a little packet of some kind of oil that you mix in with the color thats supposed to be a moisturizer and the conditioner they give u to use afterwards is really good too..its the only one recently that actually makes my hair the color (dark reddish brown) that it is on the box, the first one i used when i decided to go dark red/brown made my hair basically purple, the only complaint i have with it is that the color doesnt stay it fades after a few weeks, however i only have that problem with the red shades they make, none of the other colors they have have done that to me so i dont think you have to worry.. all the other ones are pretty much the same to me, they work but they make youre hair feel fried.. the loreal ferria i think its called, something like that, was definatley the worst one i ever used.. when i was dyeing my hair blonde it was the best as far as color. it was the only one that would make my light brown hair blonde without the bronzy tint to it, but both times i used it i literally could feel my hair crunching when i touched it and it definatley made a good amount of my hair fall out

I colored my hair myself for years. The beautician who had been coloring my hair said that she was using Wella and suggested I go to Sally's. The clerk also recommended Wella. I did use otc from the grocery store a few times but always went back to Wella because the color lasted a rich tone longer. I think that the employees at Sally's are mostly trained as beauticians but you could ask to be sure.

I use Naturtint. It has less chemicals than some others but still does the job. You can find it out Wholefoods (it's about $ 13 to $ 14 when on sale) otherwise, runs about $17... I have used it as a brunette and now as a blonde (the color I was born with) ..it works well for both...
IF you like Naturtint and find a suitable color, then you can buy it cheaper on the net..

good luck
