Audi Q 5 vs Lexus RX 350 - New York,NY

Ladies, I have two small kids and it's been almost a year since I started to work full time. I have a good salary and decided it's time to buy an SUV. My practical side tell me to buy Lexus Rx 350, spacious, soft drive for kids, maybe in grey color so my husband can occasionally drive it too... My fun "bad mom" (the new movie) side tells me to get a white Audi Q 5 - looks great but I know it's not as reliable as Lexus. I am sorry I might sound like a spoiled brat to some people. Prior to this I drove a 2008 silver Camry and I am so excited to be getting a new car. Would you chose a practical car or a car you really like a nd that will work for the family too. Thanks

What can I do next?

I had a Lexus Rx 330 and loved it. I called it my "barcalounger". BUT, and here's the big but, it had terrible gas mileage. I can't tell you how expensive it was to drive that car.

I ended up selling it after 3 years because of that.

Now, I will tell you this. When my boys were little, they were very rambunctious and I was really afraid that they would open SUV doors into another car. So I chose a mini-van instead for the sliding door. I picked one with decent gas mileage.

It wasn't until my kids were in high school that I bought the barcalounger.

I really recommend that you re-think the idea of the SUV gas guzzler...

I don't know anyone who owns an Audi SUV. I do know people who have the Lexus Rx 350. They love their cars.

I have a Honda Odyssey Touring. It's my second minivan. My first was a Grand Caravan. I NEVER thought I'd be a mini-van mom! But I am!! What I REALLY want? A Suburban!!

With small kids? I strongly suggest a minivan! No worries about kids slamming your door into someone else's car/vehicle and those automatic doors come in handy for drop-off and pick up!!! And in the rain and the snow....and the SPACE!!! I love the space!

My girlfriend just bought the Rx 350 in red - this is her 3rd Rx. She loves it.

The new features are HARD to adjust to - the car automatically stops for her when she is pulling her car into her garage. This one is about 6" longer than the old one she had.

She drives about 30 miles to work each day - the first 2 weeks (she's owned it a month now) and says the gas mileage is getting better the more she drives it.

I've not been in an Audi Q5. So I can't help you with personal comparisons. I know there's more leg room in the 2017 Rx. I know the GPS is HUGE compared to her last Rx.

Hope this helps.

Lexus is a more expensive and luxurious Toyota. They are incredibly reliable and I would go with that. Go for reliability, safety, comfort, etc...don't go for what looks fun. Though I know that's hard to do.

We are kind of in the same boat. We are looking to get a bigger SUV in the next 12-18 months. We are doing a TON of research on what to get since the large ones run at a bargain price of around $50k. UGH! Still though, it's what we need. But we're finding ourselves looking at ones we never thought we would. So do a LOT of research before you buy. Sometimes the luxury brand isn't the best option.

I just bought a new car and looked at both that you mentioned along with a bunch others. I went with the Lincoln MKX. LOVE it!!!

I did not like the Lexus. I didn't think the seat was all that comfy and honestly we didn't like the look of it. I thought about the Audi but its rating isn't all that great. Same with the Mercedes. Nice for the first 3 years but then afterwards down hill.

Volvo was the biggest disappointment. Its technology isn't there like the others. I loved the look but nope.

Lincoln MKX is comfy and very techno driven. Do check out the Acura MDX and RDX. I had an RDX for 6 years. Decided I wanted something different and a little bigger. Really liked the MDX but I thought it was pricy for the car.

I would try to find something that is both.

I don't know your incomes, but going from a Camry to a new Lexus RX350 sounds like a big jump. Have you considered others in the SUV/Crossover market that are less expensive? (I mean besides just the Audi you mentioned.) If $ isn't an issue, get what you want. But if money isn't an issue, I'm surprised you included "practical" as an option.

We are kinda lame and have always gone with the practical thus far with the kids/family car but we will be splurging next year b/c my hubby NEEDS a Tesla & claims it'll be fabulously practical, LOL!

I have to love the way it drives for me to lay down the $$$!
Which one drives better?

I'm 44. I've bought 5 different cars. I bought one new car, and we will never again buy a new car. It's a waste of money.

I always choose a practical car. It's a car. Wouldn't you rather spend half the money and go to France? It's all about the kind of life you want to live, and for me, I'd rather have an adventure than put money into a car.

We drive Honda's: practical, smart and don't break the bank. I got my fully loaded Touring with 20k on it for about 28k. It retailed at 50k. If I was you, I'd look into gently used. You can save enough to go on a few nice trips.

I'm not familiar with Audi cars, but can say that I upgraded to Lexus ES 300h sedan last year from my old Honda Odyssey minivan and I love it! It has the smoothest ride and, knock on wood, it's been extremely easy to own. The only downside to Lexus is the navigation system. It's the worst! Gives ridiculous directions (make a right turn and then u-turn, when you could just make a left at the light). If you use navigation a lot, keep that in mind. My old minivan had better navigation.

I'd read the reviews of both vehicles and see which one rates the best. Lexus isn't all practical. Mine is a really fun car to drive.

I just love my Town and Country minivan.
I think they have changed the name and they are being called Pacifica for 2017.
My husband drives a Pilot - it's ok - but I like my minivan better than his suv.

They are both beautiful cars. Doesn't Audi's commercial show a line of Lexus suv's at school pick up and the Audi shows up and the kid can tell his mom from the sea of Lexus cars.

If you can swing the Audi, go for it (sounds like this is what you want). I would have your kids or who you plan to drive in the car sit in the seats to make sure there is enough leg room.

Personally, I like the look of the Lexus more than the Audi. My dad just bought the Lexus. My mom even loves it too.

I bought the 2017 Lexus RX350. Love it.

safety features out the wazoo.

Wouldn't recommend it for a family in NYC with young kids though. The back doors are long and can damage other people's cars when thrown open. Why not try a minivan or the new Pacficia with sliding doors?

i'm probably too old for this question, because it doesn't make sense to me. i drive a Lexus 350L, an older one, and i just adore it. the color is 'amber pearl'. my husband loves it too. i'd get another one in a heartbeat.
it's by far the nicest car i've ever owned. for me it's a total luxury, not a boring practical car whatsoever.
i don't get for one second why your husband can only drive a car in a dull shade. ????
my amber pearl is a beige/gold with an undertone that's almost green. but if it were purple or bright red or sparkly midnight blue, i think my husband would still drive it without angst.
but if you like the audi better, why not?
ETA i'm a doof. just googled the Rx 350 and see it's a minvan. i withdraw all my comments.
well, except for the ones about the color.
:)
EETA chiming in again to agree with NewName, the navigation is awful, just use googlemaps in your phone. we paid a lexus dealer $70 to update the maps in the lexus navigation and it still sucked.

A new car is a new car. There is NO reason to not have what you want. I can't believe you don't just go get the one you want.
