Hi M.,
I pulled out my Secret Food Cures manual and it says to use every morning and night, mix a few tablespoons of brewer's yeast with water, enough to form a paste that will cover the affected area. Gently apply it and leave it on until it dries out and crumbles off.

I haven't had to try it, it sounds like an ok remedy.

Hi M., I know what you're going through. Both my boys have it, although the oldest hasn't been bothered in years. Their dermatologist recommends petroleum jelly and my youngest is on Protopic and Triamcinolone (both prescription). I also put a humidifier in his room and that really helps the moisture level in his skin. Try to expose him to a few minutes of sunlight w/o sunscreen when you can - the UV rays will help clear him up and he won't be at an increased risk of skin cancer from just a few minutes. If you're anywhere near IA, try to get in at the pediatric dermatology clinic at the U. of Iowa hospital - they have some of the best doctors in the country.

I have 2 kid with atopic dermatitis (eczema). Being that your baby is so young, steroid creams like cortisone are not a good idea. Another, often recommended option for older kids is Elidel, but they don't recommend this for babies.
I would suggest using aquaphor. It has worked wonders for us. It's a very, very thick cream. Eucerin sometimes hurts the worst rashes. Aquaphor doesn't seem to.

Hope that helps!

My son who is now 3, had bad ecezema and his is caused from food allergies. We tried many things both natural and drugs before finding that a combination of nystatin and hydrocortizone works great. I did have to eliminate soaps, lotions, and use dye-free detergent as well. Also there is a great Aveeno baby ecezema cream in the baby section that helps on the rest of his dry skinned body. He has about out grown his skin problems but my one year old is now having them and they are working on him too.

Hi M. -

I LOVE Aquaphore. It's made by Eucerin but it's an ointment, not a cream. I have a 4 mo old drooler as well and this works well for her. I also like to use it on my feet at night with socks to keep them soft and on my hands with gloves. I have terribly dry skin (maybe even ecezma) and lots of typical hand creams just make my skin itch even worse b/c they contain alcohol or perfume.

Hope this works for your little one!

My daughter's cheeks would bleed sometimes, but she was never diagnosed by a docter with ecezma. I used some kind of cream my mom gave me, Aquaphor? The main ingredient was petrolium jelly(vasoline). Lotions would sting her and make the problem worse. It cleared right up by spring, but I still put it on after each bath. I think winter is the worst season for irritated skin. So, hang in there, it won't last forever!

My son was about your baby's age when he started showing signs of ecezma - especially around the eyes. His doctor prescribed Elidel cream - a little goes a long way. It's safe and works like a charm. If I let a couple days slip between refilling it, his rash comes back. It may be worth asking your doctor about. It's the only thing that works for my son - and he's now two and a half. Good luck!

Hi M.,

I am a victim of the horrible excema bug. I had it since I was 1 (after my mom stopped breast feeding me) and I still have it today at age 32. Here are a few tricks I can recommend and ones I have given to my own doctor for patients with it. My own son (19 months) does not have it, but these items are safe for babies as well.

Eucerin is great, but not the best. Always, always use oinment instead of cream for excessive dry skin. Eucerin makes an ointment, especially for babies called AUQAPHOR. This clears up everything, diaper rash, cuts (from little fingernails), dry lips, and excema! I should have bought stock in it!!!

Next, Aveeno makes an oatmeal like bath relief. You use one package per bath and the oatmeal kind of coats your skin and makes it soft again. It also takes the itch out, so MOMS it works for poison ivy, hives, or rashes too! I use this more for me, but why not give it a try.

Lastly, wit my own son, if it is caused by drool, he got dry skin from that too, I would wash his face with only warm water after eating and then apply a thin layer of vaseline or Aquaphor to his face. It clears up in a day.

Other hints for excema, bathe only three times per week, do not always use soap (drys you out!), and watch what you eat. Push the fluids- if your body is hydrated, usually your skin follows.

I sure hope this helps! Good luck!

My son has never had eczema, but he did have really dry skin on his face until he was about 9 months or so. I only wash his face with Cetaphil cleanser--you can rinse it with water or just rub it on their face and wipe it off with a soft cloth. I also use Cetaphil cream on his face. It seems to be less greasy than the eucerin. This combination seemed keep it under control and it only returned if we didn't use the cream often enough. Also, I have never tried it, but the company Summers Labs makes a cream for eczema called Triple Cream. I LOVE the product they make for diaper rash--TriplePaste, so I am sure this is a great product too. You should be able to find it at Target or online if you google "triple cream eczema".
Hope this helps. It is terrible to see your little one so miserable.

Hi M.,

I would love to send you a couple of samples of a fabulous lotion that many people are getting releif from their excema from, it is the ONLY lotion that I use on my son. If you like it then we can talk about how you can get it directly at wholesale prices. I would also recomend going AWAY from chemical cleaners and laundry products, find a brand that works for you. Obviously I can also provide these for you, but I would be happy to give you some samples of the lotion to see if they help before you make any decisions. Please know though that along with the lotion the chemicals in your home can make a HUGE differance.

It also works on my husband. oatmeal baths are great as well. they are a cheap easy home remedy. my 8 year old will actually ask me to give her a oatmeal bath when she starts to get ichy. it works great for poison ivy, sun burns, & chicken pox. the best part is it is all natural, cheap, & easy to do. hope this helps

My son also has eczema he has had it since 3 weeks, he uses hydrocortisone 1%. You may be able to buy it without a script. Other lotions to use aquaphor or aquaphillic these are emollients which help keep in moisture. It's good to keep areas clean. However, quickly after the bath get the creams on to lock in moisture. Also use aveeno bath products and aveeno regular lotion. I would also highly recommend using a dye and fragrant free laundry soap. Such a tide free, dreft, or all. All is the cheapest and it works great. Good luck, its no fun for the little ones especially when it itches!

Hi M.,
Both my sons have eczema. My 5 year old's eczema started as a baby. It was heart wrenching to see his little face and head scratched and bleeding. I tried dozens of products - unfortunately many contained tree nuts which I did not know at the time he was allergic to. I have found that both my children's eczema seem related to (or worsened by) particular foods. There is no cure for eczema. It is a skin condition/disease. There are medications that manage it very well, but it's a tough decision to make - if and when to start them. I guess you have to decide based on the amount of misery your little one is experiencing. I believe Elidel can be used at younger ages.
After trying dozens of creams and lotions, we have settled in on Vanicream - no dyes, lanolin, fragrance, parabens, preservatives etc. We use the cream by the tub. I also use the lotion when I prefer less grease. They make a sun screen as well. I buy my vanicram products at Dean West, but I'm sure they are sold elsewhere and they can be ordered on line.

I started my 5 year old on prescription medication when he was 2 years old. (Unfortunately, Arbonne was not effective for my son.) It was a tough decision, but I couldn't stand to see him so miserable. It has gotten better with age and I guess many children grow out of it. Now we only have to spot treat him and use anti-itch ointment as well. Please feel free to respond with any questions. I don't want to over extend my response.

Good luck.

When my son was a baby, he too had horrible eczema on his face, arms, and legs. I tried everything, including changing his formula, using Eucerin, Aquaphor, etc. Nothing worked, and like you said, some of these things made it worse. Cetaphil did make a small difference but I had to put it on multiple times a day. I stopped using soap on his skin as well. What really made a difference was that he was diagnosed with an allergy to pineapple (who knew you could be allergic to pineapple?) and eggs. His allergist prescribed an allergy medication regimen. His eczema cleared up right away. His allergist said that eczema is often caused by allergic reactions. I didn't know that. Because of my experience, I would suggest discussing the possibility of allergies with your pediatrician. It made all the difference for my little boy. As time has passed, he still gets dry spots mostly on his legs and arms. Increasing his water consumption seems to make a difference as well. GOOD LUCK!!

Hello Melanie~

I have a 9 year old and 5 year old and all 3 of us have ecezma so I know both sides of your dilema.

I have converted my entire house to using Melaleuca brand products. It is an at home business but you don't have to run it that way. I just buy for my family every month instead.

Anyhow, the melaleuca oil in all the lotions and cleaners have made our lives alot easier and less painful. First I got the Renew hand cream and we use it everywhere. I then went to using their soaps and shampoos. After that I got the laundry products because the kids have ecezma on their arms and legs too. The regular detergent made that worse. Then since I have it on my hands and do most of the cleaning I got all the cleaning products. I won't tell you it is completely gone but I think I am the only one who is still dealing with the rash and mine is so infrequent than it was that I am excited.

The other responses are right too. I tried Gold Bond it was good after an outbreak but I found that the Melaleuca stopped the outbreaks for the kids completely. Also the responses are right that it is trial and error and you do need to stick with a brand once you find a solution, no doubt.

Let me know if I can help or anything to get you in touch with how to get started. I do spend about $50 a month on products but I would spend that on other cleaners at the store anyhow so I don't consider it an expense.

Hope you can find some relief

Hi M.!

I'm sorry to hear about your little one! It's tough when your baby is uncomfortable and you can't find a fix fast enough... The reason my antennae went up after reading your request was because I've seen this before on other babies! My day job is actually educating moms on the Harmful Ingredient Issue and while I have all kinds of scary facts from places like the Cancer Prevention Coalition, National Geograhpic and countless newspapers, the reality is a lot of moms are unfamiliar with most of them!

One reason your daughter may be having this ecezema problem is because babies have extra sensitive skin and when we put lotions and soaps on them with harmful ingredients, like glycerin, they do things like clog pores and suffocate the skin. You keep your skin from breathing - you keep it from healing!

A specefic culprit might be mineral oi. It's a skin irritant that is used a lot in wrinkle creams (and lotions) because it causes slight inflammation, which in turn reduces the appearnce of lines. However, when that ingredient is applied to sensitive skin with eczema, the inflammation can make the eczema worse, or prevent it from healing all the way.

Other culprits may be: SLS, alcohol, benzoic/benzyl, DEA, TEA, 1-4-dioxane, mineral oil, glycerin, PEF, petrolatum, talc... (I could on) I would suggest checking the labels on your personal care products like soaps, lotions, baby products, cosmetics (for you) and anything else in your bathroom that your family uses. If they contain any of the harmful ingredients listed above (or worse, multiple ones!) then I would suggest checking out the website below. It talks more in depth about this issue, gives those third party references like the Cancer Prevention Coalitions "Dirty Dozen" list of the 12 most common harmful ingredients found in baby products and some information on what you can do if you want to change your home to a safe and healthy one.

I hope this helps you and other moms out there with their ecezema problems!

Try to stay away from the scented baby soap... If at all possible (I know that this is hard because she is so young and you want to protect her eyes) wash her with Dove or Oil of Olay soap. If she's allergic to the creams, she could very well be allergic to other perfumes/creams, so you're going to want to be VERY careful about switching over to new soaps/detergents. When you find something that works, STICK WITH IT!!! My mom and my almost 3 year old have eczema pretty bad, but we have found these things through trial and error. USE: Oil of Olay and Dove soap. DO NOT USE: Ivory and Dial. For laundry detergent, Tide really is the best, I never used anything different even for my boys' baby clothes, I was always afraid to sway. I use original scent, less perfumes. Also, when he has the break-outs and it stops 'oozing' and is just the dry, flaky stuff, put Gold Bond Shea Butter lotion on it. It really works wonders. As for her drooling and laying in it, all that you can do is try to keep her dry as much as you can (which I am sure you do!). Maybe if she can tolerate the Gold Bond lotion, if you put that on her face, it will put a barrier on her face and help keep the wetness out? I believe that there is also a shea butter baby soap, that might be tearless, so if you find that she can handle that, maybe that can solve your problem in the bath. Good luck, I know how hard it is.

Some children are sensitive to the protein in cow's milk, and eczema is often the main symptom... which might explain why switching formula didn't help much. Anything with caseine, caseinate, whey, whey isolate and a huge list of other milk-solid ingredients will cause a reaction... so eliminating it entirely is hard, but possible. It is in soy formula.

Even breastfeeding babies can experience this, as the protein gets into mothers milk in sufficient quantities to be a problem, meaning *mom* has to stop eating everything with any cow's milk protein in it - not an easy task, as almost all processed foods have it unles they are specifically labelled 'dairy-free'.

The only happy side is that living without it for long enough (a couple of years) is generally enough for the child's digestive system to mature enough to grow out of it.

We are too quick to cover up problems with medication in this generation. Try some common sense understanding of your water. If there is soap scum in your tub there is soap scum on your skin, in your laundry, on your hair and scalp, etc. Soap causes irritations and dryness.
Just as the hard water causes the soap to scum up your tub and shower and laundry it sticks to the skin and causes irritations, dryness, dandruff, and dull brittle hair. It's not good for your skin, your appliances, your laundry or your plumbing.
I used to be able to tell if my softener was working properly by looking at my son's hands. If it was NOT his hands would get red and crusty on the back. When he started school his hands started looking like that. I told him to stop using the soap when he washed his hands at school or not wash at all unless he really needed to.
Besides all that, a water softener will save you money in several ways:
Make your water appliances last longer
Use half as much laundry soap, dish soap, eliminate fabric softeners, half on shampoo conditioner bath soap lotions, and all other cleaning supplies.
Your laundry will be cleaner, sinks, toilets, tubs etc will require less cleaning and cleaning products making life a little easier.
The hard water will quit sticking to your scalp and you may even get rid of your dandruff problems all together!

When my daughter was first born (now 5) her pediatrician told me that the main irritants to babies skin were perfumes. She said a good soap to use was Dove Sensitive and the best lotion to use (if needed) was Cetaphil. Personally, I would try using only water on a baby washcloth on her face since all soaps are drying. As far as detergents are concerned...Try using a variety that is "free and clear" (no perfumes or dyes added). My kids are 5 and 2 and I still use the Costco free and clear. There are other brands out there as well. There are also free and clear softeners that work well. Hope this gave you a bit more info.

My son also had bad eczema. I tried many creams but actually what worked the best was a combination of aquaphor and hydrocortisone cream (ask your Dr. and they will mix a compound for you at the pharmacy). Also, I didn't use any soap on his body at all and bathed him in aveeno oatmeal bath. This really helped calm the eczema down. Most of the time they do grow out of it. My son is now 13 months and besides have occasional dry skin, his eczema is gone. Good luck.

Hi M.,

I can see from glancing through the responses you have recieved so far that there are many references to Arbonne products. I would like to share with you WHY they work so well for excema.

One of the big reasons is that Arbonne products are "pH correct"...which means that they are between 5.5 and 6.5 on the pH scale, which ranges from 1-14. Water is a 7 on the pH scale, which is why even putting a child in a tub of plain water can be irritating to them. But if you were to squirt some of Arbonne's Cleansing Gel into the water, it causes the water to become pH correct and the child is fine.

Our skin likes to be slightly acidic (5.5-6.5) and when we have products next to our skin that are not pH correct like that, the skin reacts negatively (excema, etc...). Even bedding and clothing can cause this reaction if there are residues from harsh detergents (not pH correct) in the fibers of the fabric.

Arbonne's ABC Hair & Body Wash is great as it can be used for shampoo and bubblebath and in the place of soap. In fact, the ABC Baby Care line is amazing.

You may enjoy reading some more on the Arbonne difference on my daughter's website www.jesserose.myarbonne.com ...she's a licensed Esthetician and has some great skin care tips on there for young and old alike.

I hope you take up the offer of these nice Mom's who posted their reply to you already to get some of these products for you. You'll be so glad you did!

I know this sounds a little strange, but I have eczema on my face also, and I used to work in a pharmacy...use hydrocortisone cream. You know, the kind you would put on a bug bite or something. It works really well. My sister's baby had severe ecezma all over his body, and she got a prescription (a steroid) I recomended the hydrocortisone and she said that she thought that it worked better. It also helps with the itch and keeps them from scratching at it.

If the irritation is caused by drool, I would also recommend using the grins & giggles moisture stick. The 1st ingredient is petrolium. Which is a skin protectant. This will help prevent the irritation. My son would drool and his chin would get irritated. This moisture stick is a dream.

Both things are only a couple of dollars, I would try them 1st before spending a bunch of money on other products.

If you know anyone that sells Arbonne get their diaper rash cream. It's natural, it doesn't have that smell and it rubs in better than the others. I didn't have the money to go buy Eucerin lotion and since I knew this worked for others, I used it on my son when his cheeks were chapped and dry, it was noticeably better within the day and cleared up within 2- 4 days. Even on baby acne it helps. It does cost more than the others but you get quite a bit and it works.

Aquaphor is the answer. My daughter's eczema flares up every winter and this really helps. For a severe flare, I alternate hydrocortisone cream with Aquaphor several times a day, once it starts to subside though, the Aquaphor works great by itself. It's especially useful if you apply it to skin right after bathing, while skin is still moist, then re-apply any time skin appears dry or red. It is made by the Eucerin company, but is not a cream and should not share any of the ingredients that made your baby react to the Eucerin cream.

There are LOTS of things that can cause ecezma. It is really hard to figure out which thing triggers it. Have you tried changing laundry detergents? Even if you use Dreft on your baby's stuff, you should use it on your stuff too. Your baby comes in contact with your clothes as much as their own. I also know of a good website to buy things that are made to NOT irritate people and lots of people who suffer with ecezma switched to this brand and have gotten better. email me at ____@____.com so I can tell you about it.

The pharmacist said that the cvs brand of eucerin works just fine. Eucerin is what they use in the hospitals.

Get a referral to a pediatric dermatologist. My now 4 year old has had ecezma since around 12 months. Her pediatrician and I always tried to treat it with the similar things you are trying. I was getting frustrated because ecezma really really really itches. A dermatologist will know what's best, after all it is his/her specialty. It's also best to treat it before it gets worst. Trust me on that. Good luck.

Hi M.,

Creams may help treat the symtoms but my goal would be to cure the problem. If you are on city/municipal water please consider buying a reverse osmosis filtration system to filter out the toxins in your daughters bath water, etc... Chlorine, flouride, and many other additives are commonly used in water treatment plants and are harmful to our health. Your MD may not have mentioned this, but I bet that if you went to his/her home you would find the RO system in place. We noticed a significant improvement in our daughters skin as soon as we invested in an RO system.
Check online as prices vary. Hope this cures the problem.

Hello!
I am a student of Ayurveda and A mom. I would recommend a neem oil in coconut oil. It is a very cooling and soothing oil, and in a coconut oil so gentle.

Eczema can be caused from too many firey foods and substances, so if she is nursing, you can be mindful to stay away from hot peppers, vinegars, and drying foods too (alcohol, chips, crackers, coffee, caff teas). (Consult a book on Ayurveda call Complete Home Remedies by Vasant Lad) Eat lots of ghee (clarified butter) especially in the winter, and dark leafy greens.
Good luck...

Hi M.,
I am a naturopath who works with children alot. the first thing when it comes to ecezma is to make sure that the baby is moving her bowels. She should be going #2 everytime after she eats. Most skin issues are a weak digestion issue. If you or the baby have been exposed to antibiotics in the past 3 years it can effect skin health and bowel health of the baby dramically. What I have found helps greatly is improving the digestion of the baby and supplementing you, the mom with good bacteria. I would suggest taking a good probiotic supplement (Bifidophilus Flora Force) for yourself about 3 capsules at bed-will pass to the baby. Then opening up 1 capsule and making a paste with the the bifidophilus and 1/2 tsp Silver Sheild(colloidal silver liquid)and apply this topically onto any rash/ecezma/or red spot. also add 1 capsule bifidophilus flora force and 1 capsule Proactazyme plus enzyme to her bottle twice daily. this should help with bowels and infection. This should help to clear it up within a week or so. Another important thing for new babies is that taking formula is very h*** o* a baby's digestion. Raw Goats milk-if you can get a hold of it is very easy on the digestion and creates less allergies. The proactazyme plus helps with the digestion of the formula as well. One of my favorite brands is Nature's Sunshine. You can order it by phone at a 50% discount 1-800-223-8225 (Member#734282-7)Good luck

Wow you have a lot of responses to look through! Good Luck with that! I noticed that people talked mostly about how to get rid of it and not what is causing it. You mentioned that it cleared up a bit once you changed formula but didn't go away alltogether. This might be an allergy to food. A lot of times children are allergic to cow milk but since we introduce it before they can talk they have no way of telling us their tummy hurts. Ecezma is often a sign that the baby isn't pooping enough or has a blockage in the colon. Formula can be very constipating in babies. I have a friend that says once the colon becomes underactive then it is just a matter of time befor the other organs of elimination (lungs, kidney's, etc) become underactive ending with the skin. You might want to look into a dairy free formula.

A pediatrician at Mayo Clinic recommended it for our daughter when she had some patches of severe dry skin. It worked amazingly fast. It is free of fragrances, dyes, etc. I like the skin cream best because it is really thick, but the lotion is great too. They also have liquid soap and shampoo called Free and Clear. Mayo OB uses it with all newborns for their first baths and recommends using it for the first month. I know Target carries it usually in the pharmacy area (not with other lotions) and you can buy it from Target.com.
