Baby Gate Climber

My toddler (2 weeks shy of turning 2 years old) is also trying to climb over the baby gate and can lean over it and has been able to pry it open (the wooden kind with the knotted lever that you can adjust for door width then push down to "lock"). I'd love to hear your suggestions - thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your responses. My sister gave me a gate she no longer needs. It's much taller - about half the doorway - which is a little taller than he. He tried sticking his feet in to climb, but it's another wooden gate and that feels about like chain - link fencing on bare feet I'd imagine - not too comfy! I think this will work for a few more months - and by then he should be okay for no more gates! Thank you!!

One of my boys was the same way. My husband would raise the baby gate up a couple of inches off the floor that way my son would no longer be able to reach the latch. It will work for a while but you can only raise it up so much.
Really there is not a whole lot you can do. Are trying to confin your son to one room are trying to keep him out of a room? If your trying to keep him out of a room you can also put a second on top of the first but this is alot of troble for you if you need access to this room. Good luck

Try telling him no and let him know that it will hurt if he falls. If that doesn't work, baby oil on the rungs keeps little toes from getting a good hold.

We had a great baby gate by Evenflo called Simple Effort that uses a wall mounted remote to open the gate and there is also a manual opener on the gate itself but it would be hard for a 2 yr old. You have to push down the button and slide it at the same time. We got the gate at Target so we could keep our younger twins out of their older siblings rooms. The only problem we had with it was after we had it for awhile we couldn't keep the batteries working. It would run them down in a couple of days. I'm thinking that was probably an unusual problem and by that time our twins were 3 and less likely to put small toys in their mouth and the big kids could work the manual latch but the twins still hadn't figured it out.
I read your other request and each of my 4 kids fell/climbed out of their cribs and then wouldn't try again for awhile. So if it scared him he may not want to do that again for awhile! They do make those crib tents that will keep them in. I kept my kids in their cribs until they were 3. They slept longer in the morning when they were contained :).
It was great while it lasted. Good luck!

She's using the horizontal locking bar to stand on. Get a gate that is one piece and does't have the substantial bar in the middle.

My son was a climber too...

Cut his door in half, and only use the bottom half. You will have to buy him a new door when he's older. Just make sure you cut high enough that he can't climb over.
