HELP!! There are so many different types of baby mattresses out there and I'm sure there are some that are better than others but I'm not sure which is which. I want to get a good mattress but I also don't want to spend a ton of money on a mattress that turns out not to be any good. Does anyone know which brands are best?

What can I do next?

When looking for a crib matress you need to check for firmness, the more firm the safer. Also you'll want a waterproof material. Babies R Us has some reasonable matresses.

I got my son a Sealy for about $35 at either Kmart or Walmart. It's nice and firm and he seems to like it well enough. The mattress cover cost more than the darn mattress!

I got a Baby Sealy at Wal Mart for $60. It as already waterproof so I didn't have to buy a cover for it. While i was looking I found matresses in prices ranging from about $40 all the way up to $300. Since this was my 1st child I was leaning toward the $300 mattress. Thankfully, my mother-in-law, who raised two boys of her own and two of her grandchildren talked some sense into me! Go with what you can afford. Stick to a brand like Sealy or Beauty Rest that has a good reputation and don't let anyone talk you into buying a bunch of accessories that your baby doesn't need.

I got a great Sealy mattress from Babies R Us. My son loves it and has been sleeping through the night from the moment we put him in his crib. It was about $100, but when buying a mattress, just remember that the same mattress will fit their toddler bed, so you will get plenty of use out of it!

We spent about $300 on my daughter's mattress because she was our first and we didn't know any better, we just listened to the salesperson. It was as firm as a board and she hated it at first because of that. We bought my son's at Wal-Mart for around $100 and he loves it. It is not soft but not as firm as a board either. I would definitely not spend too much on it. They also make waterproofing cases to put around them if the mattress is not waterproof itself. They are cheap and just zip up around the actual mattress.

Honestly, with our first baby, we didn't have much money and got a mattress from Walmart. With our second baby, (we still aren't rich) we had much more money and could've afforded a much nicer mattress, but we felt there wasn't a real need to do so. Babies weigh so little and for safety reasons, they don't need cushion (to prevent SIDS). Realistically, they'll be done with that mattress by age two. My advice is go to your local Walmart or Target and don't spend more than the lowest or second to lowest price. Congrats on being a new mom! It's wonderful :)

I can't remember the name of the mattress that we got for my boys, but the salesperson swore by it. It was a mattress that vibrated and slowly will die down. My boys didn't like that at all. We paid the extra money for it and it was worthless. So I would not spend any extra money on a vibrating mattress.
