Hi, my 13 month old daughter has a cold with a terrible cough. My poor baby is miserable. She has had the cough for about 5 days now. I took her to her pediatrician and was told there was nothing I could give her for a cough and to let it run its course. She is miserable, when she starts to cough, it seems to be very h*** o* her little body and she starts to cry because I am sure her throat must be raw from coughing so much and so hard. She usually sleeps through the night but the past 4 nights she has been up on and off all night because of the cough. I have a humidifier that I run every night and I have rubbed vicks on her but nothing seems to help her cough. Does anybody have any suggestions so my baby can get some much needed relief!! Thanks.

What can I do next?

My kids are grown now, but while they were little (and even now) I resort to methods used by my mother and one that seemed to work for me was Eucalyptus oil. I would put a few drops of the oil on the baby's pillow and on their clothes and it would help clear the passageways and the tickle in their throats that made them cough. I have bronchitis and I still use this method to get some sleep. I hope this helps.

Mix some honey and apple cider vinegar 1/2 & 1/2, and mix a little w/ some water in the baby's bottle or give the baby a tsp. w/ a dropper. These are just food items and can't be harmful. You can give this as needed.

If you give her regular milk (like we drink) stop until she is over the cough. The milk will sit on their chest like a coating and it actually makes things worse.

The broth from chicken noodle soup is wonderful for them. I add some water to it warm it like a normal bottle and let them drink it. I would do one of these a day because the broth/heat helps them when they are sick. My son is now 3 and anytime he doesn't feel well he ask for chicken noodle soup, he says it makes him feel better and his muscles grow - They are so cute at these young ages. Enjoy!

A friend of mine recommended a homeopathic brand called B&T Bronchial cough for children. After the doctor had given her son antibiotics and other types of medicine, her son was still very sick. She decided to treat him on her own and used the B&T along with other formulas from a natural food store and she got great results! I used the B&T recently for my son who is now 18 months. It really works! It helps to clear up the cough quickly. The dosage instructions starts at 1 teaspoon for age 2. I showed it to the doctor and she said that I could give him 3/4 teaspoon. Check with your pediatrician. Maybe you can administer 1/2 teaspoon. You can purchase it at Whole Foods or a natural food store.

You have gotten lots of great advice, but here is my opinion. There is a good reason why the Pediatrician is sometimes reluctant to prescribe "cough" medicine. When we are sick there is always a reason for the cough that accompanies our illness. Rather than treat the "cough" most peds will treat the "cause" for the cough. For example, if the cough is caused by congestion, they will prescribe a decongestant. If the cough is caused by allergies, then they prescribe an allergy medicine like Singulair or Zyrtec. If a small child has an upper respiratory infection or drainage from their sinuses going into their throat and lungs, the last thing you want to do is stop the cough. The child may end up with bronchitis or pneumonia. Coughing is the body's way to clear the throat and lungs of mucous and phlegm. Coughing is an important bodily function. So rather than treat the cough (as annoying and painful as I know it is for your little one) find out WHY she is coughing and treat the SOURCE.
Just 2 cents from a "Mom" of 5 little ones.

Hi C., You can go to WholeFoods and get Grapefruit seed extract. It is a natural antifungal, antibiotic and it will get rid of the congestion quickly. if you have a small medicine cup you can put a small amount of her juice in it and put 8-10 drops of the grapefruit seed extract in it. it is a thick syrup so mix it with your finger into the juice and have her drink it. You can also put it in a full cup of juice just make sure she drinks it all. should clear up in 2 days max! Good luck and feel free to contact me if you have questions!

If your daughter is over a year old, I don't know why her dr. won't prescribe some cough medicine with a little codeine in it....but regardless, I would also use homeopathic formulas which are available at Whole Foods and certain pharmacies.
I used these little 'pellets' with homeopathic remedies that really truly help. the come in a little blue tube & treat the symptoms of cough.

I would call the pediatrician and explain what's going on. I would think there must be some sort of expectorant or mucous thinner than could be prescribed. You can also put a small amount of Vick's on the soles of her feet and cover w/ socks. Apparently this does help with congestion by dilating blood vessels. (It's an old wive's remedy that might help)
If you think her throat is sore, try ibuprofen for infants. This controls sore throat pain better then Tylenol.

Hi, once when my son was that age - our dr was out of town and they referred us to another one and he was about 90 yrs old-LOL. But he said to give him warmed pure apple juice and to put a little honey in it and this helped alot. My regular ped prescribed mucinex granules as well but I would check with the ped. first and my mom swares by the yellow tylenol. She gave it to us when we were babies but once again I would check with the dr. I know there are cough medicines that can be given at that age also maybe they need a breathing treatment. I would go to urgent care and have the baby evaluated. Good Luck!!! S.

Hi C.,

I can sympathize with you, my son went through the same thing and neither of us got any sleep since he was in the same room with me at the time. What worked for us is Vicks Baby rub on the chest and feet (with socks under footed jammies) after a nice long warm bath with the door closed to hold in all of the steam. Put her to bed on a boppy pillow if you have one, it elevates the chest and head and keeps the drip from causing a cough in the night. If she wakes up coughing in the night you may need to reapply the Vicks to get her some relief so she can get back to sleep. It's frustrating, I know!

I also found great results from the Triminic soothing vapors fan but can not find it anymore. It's battery operated and portable which is great but a pain to change the batteries.

I bought another that plugs in and releases vapors but it's a bit strong for his small room. The humidifiers do seem to help as well if there is congestion.

I hope she gets better soon!

If none of these lovely natural suggestions work, try Delsym Cough Suppressant. It works for 12 hours. My pediatrician recommended it a few years ago (my son is 3) and we have used it a couple of times. We only use it at night to help him sleep. We let him cough during the day to hopefully get up what needed to come up.

They sale it at any pharmacy/ Wal-Mart/ Target. Here is a link for more info on it:

Talk to your pharmacist or pediatrician to get your exact dosage.

Good luck!

I also have a 13 month old with a cough. I have been giving her honey early in the day. (Too late at night tends to make her more active). Babies under 1 year should not eat honey, but at 13 months she should be fine. My ped ok's it. At night I have been running a warm steam vaporizer (Vicks-$19.99 at Babies R Us) and adding some Eucalyptus oil. They also sell Vicks drops you can add. You can try rubbing Vicks or the like on the soles of her feet and covering them with socks. Believe it or not, this seems to help too! Hope your little one feels better soon!!

Hi C.,

I read in an article that you should rub the vicks on her feet and cover them with socks.. it should give her relief within about 20 minutes. I know it sounds "off", but you do absorb things thru your feet quickly and it can't hurt to try. I think the article was in Readers Digest, and the people's testimonials were all positive. They said it works especially fast in children. And because its the vapor rub, you can do it several times a day.
Sorry that your baby is so miserable.. I hope this little trick works!! PLease let me know if you try this little home remedy and how it worked out!

Good luck! :)

You want to search for the cause of the problem and not just treat the symptoms. I want your baby to feel well and not suffer. Take your daughter to a chiropractor to get checked for Spinal Subluxations. These are misalignments of the spinal bones that can occur thru the birth process, any falls and poor sleeping postures just to name a few. The brain and spinal nerves must be able to communicate to the body what it needs to do to stay healthy and heal. The body must be able to respond back to the brain and tell it how it's functioning. Any interference in this communication will alter the bodies ability to heal and function properly. Get your baby checked for Subluxations. A good source of information on Chiropractic and children is the website of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). Their web address is www.icpa4kids.com. This site contains articles, information and research on health related issues concerning children. Their mission statement reads, "The mission of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association is to bring the life saving benefits of chiropractic care to all children." Hi C.,
So sorry to hear that she has such a bad cough. We have been going through it as well around here.
I have a remedy that's very inexpensive that is used a Uchi Pines, in Alabama. They are a health conditioning clinic that uses only natural remedies and change of diet to control problems such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease and other life threatening problems, and have a very high success rate.
The remedy that they use(and we have tried it too and it works!) for coughing is you warm the baby in a nice warm bath, making sure she does not get chilled, then you have ready a wet bandage (a wide ace bandage works great on small children) or long towel that is room temperature. Make sure it is completely rung out and not dripping wet. Then you wrap it under her arms around her chest and back area, making sure to cover her whole back and chest area where the lungs are. The bandage will feel cold to her. Then you quickly wrap a dry bandage or towel around her making sure to cover all of the wet bandage so that she will not get chilled or it will not work. After that you take a clean garbage bag or plastic bag and either cut holes for the head and arms or snugly wrap it around covering all of the towel/bandage to insulate her and you can tape it or safety pin it so that it's not moving all over the place.
After this you can put on her pajamas/clothes, (this is best done when she is going to go to bed, however you can do it anytime).
The purpose of the room temperature wet towel/bandage is to boost the circulation of the body and increase white blood cells, and then the dry towel and the plastic bag acts as a insulator and mini sauna, and really helps the cough. My daughter has asthma, and both my boys have had ugly coughs, and it has been a wonderful and cheap way to quiet their coughs!
I really hope this helps with you too! I was really skeptical at first, but I hate giving medicine, and wanted a more natural way to treat my children than giving them all sorts of chemicals and manufactured medicines.
Take care and feel free to write me if you have any other questions.

Not sure why your DR won't perscribe something if the cough is that bad. My son takes one called Phenyl Chlor Tan Suspension. This helps him, he has asthma so every time the weather changes he gets sick w/ a sinus infection and gets a horrible cough. This helps and also propping the pillows. We use a humidifier but I don't see any difference when we use but I do because that's what my DR said to use. And I agree with one of the other moms, try a different DR. Good Luck!

I just went through this with my 20-month-old little girl. I elevated her in the crib a bit with an appropriate pillow and when she awoke from coughing, I gave her a bit of tepid water to soothe her throat. It allowed her to go back to sleep fairly easily. I also rubbed Vicks on her feet and put socks on her and after her bath I steamed up the bathroom for 10-15 minutes so as to help her break up mucus before she went to sleep.

I also was given a homeopathic sinus remedy by my pediatrician and that helped a lot. My pediatrician is both a traditional Western doctor and a homeopath. Use of the over-the-counter cough syrups and decongestants is not advised for children under 2 and with caution for those under 4. This cough does last a long time--more than ten days in our case.

When you start to put her to bed, cover her chest with a good film of Vicks Vaporub and make sure her jammie top is fastened together in the front - so as to keep her chest warm. Also, cover the soles of her feet with the Vicks and the put heavy socks on. She will sleep through the night. This works on adults, too! The soles of the feet absorb the oils in the Vicks and it stops the cough. Much safer than something from the doctor. The trick is to keep her warm at all times and not allow her to get chilled. I reared 3 children and 2 grandchildren - am an old Grammaw. Happy Thanksgiving!!

Oh my I so know what you are going threw. My son had this cough from mid October threw just last week. So prepare your self for some sleepless nights. My normally great sleeper was so so threw this. I was told to give him the Tylenol Cold that matched his symptoms. So I got the Cough and runny nose (which did come in a few days). He took it for about 8 days. Same thing though…when it started he just did not know how to handle the cough and would cough and turn red for 30-40 seconds which is an eternity when it seems they cant catch their breath. Sometimes the bout would lead into crying but in a few days he seemed to figure it out and sort of how to control it. I had heard mixed things about giving them honey even at this age but I did it any way and he’s fine. I would only give him ¼ of a tsp, in a syringe. Like before his nap or even before dinner, and it really seemed to help, I was not sure if his throat was bothering him, but I figured with all the coughing it had to be a bit sore. And I gave him a bath or a shower daily and that helped alot. Hope this helps!

My son (18mths) and myself having been sick all week and antibiotics aren't my first choice. When we get sick I make a lot of smoothies, with pomagranite, mango, strawberries and yogurt. The pomagranite and mango have tons of antioxidants which will help your immune system, strawberries have lots of vitamin C, (more than orange juice) and the yogurt has probiotics (good bacteria). If she'll eat the fruit thats better, but my son won't eat these fruits, so I make smoothies. We've been feeling a lot better, he hasn't been coughing and his runny nose went away, hope that helps. I'm not sure if your daughter is old enough for it-- you could call and check. Something that seems to help my boys, too, is to run the shower as hot as possible and fill the bathroom with steam, then sit in the bathroom with them for about 15-20 minutes. It helps relax the airways. Good luck-- I know it's so sad to see your baby so miserable.

I don't know why the Dr. told you there is nothing you can give her, but there are infant cold meds. at the pharmacy section of the grocery stores. I used them a couple times when my kids were babies. Just get cough medicine for infants and follow the instructions, if she has other symptoms then try to find one that takes care of as many symptoms as possible. She is past the year mark so there should be more meds. available for her. I know that a lot of these meds. don't cure the problem, but they do help the child feel better while their body works to fight off a cold.

If the cough isn't better after a couple more days then take her back to the Dr. and insist that they check her out, since the cough has gotten so bad and went on for so long. The Dr's will usually tell you that you have to let it run it's course, but they are also supposed to tell you to bring the child back in if symptoms haven't improved after so much time.

Hi C.,

I HIGHLY recommend getting her to an upper cervical chiropractor immediately. It is amazing how the immune system will work to fight these things off if the neurological system is working properly. I have seen kids come into the chiropractor's office feeling lousy and going out feeling so much better. I discovered chiropractic care when my oldest had febrile seizures and I have learned so much since then. I use chiropractic care as health maintenance, have detoxed my house and my kids never get sick.

Melaleuca tea is soothing to the throat and will actually heal any inflammation or irritation that the cough is causing. I drink this because I enjoy it, but it has so many health benefits also.

If you want to talk more I'd be glad to help.

She is probably too little to suck on a all natural cough /throat lozenger from a health food store ( zand ) makes a really great one and in many different yummy flavors. They are made with rice syrup as opposed to sugar or corn syrup, maybe you can hold one of these for her and help her to suck on it and this can help her throat feel better.

I hope she feels better soon!
you should get a different doctors opinion if it is persistent for more than 10 days or if you truly "FEEL" something is not right.

best of luck for you ,
S.

Was going to tell you about the Vicks but someone beat me to it. I have not used it personally but my sister did and her son was better that night. Just spread it on thick on their feet and put on socks for it to do its magic!

Good luck!

Hey there C.
Try sitting on the floor of your shower and let the steam fill the room. Make your daughter comfortable by reading books etc or playing. The steam helps fill the lungs and break up the mucus. Good luck ...

My son has had a cough since the 11th of the month and a little before, that I am using the pediacare plug in vapors at night and the saline nasal drops when he sounds really stuffy. I don't use the nasal squeezie thing every time because he hates the drops and the squeezer. He really doesn't cough when the vapors plugged in with an insert that hasn't been used up. I have to change it when we go to bed and in the middle of the night. i can tell a difference when he is in the room with it and when he is not. He is 11 months old. The first night with the plug in he slept better than when he is well. I think the cold was really doing him in. I have been using the plug in for colds since he was 7 months old. also elevating he head helps too.

My mom grew up on an Indian Reservation and they used Vicks for EVERYTHING. She taught me this little trick....
Rub Vicks on her feet then put socks on her so she doesn't get it everywhere. We've never tried it during the day, but it works GREAT at night and I'm sure it probably will during the day too.
Also if she'll take it, a spoonful of local honey helps too. My kids never would try it, but it works for my hubbyand I!

Ok first of all I would find a new doctor. I have 3 kids ranging from 3 yrs to 5 mths. They all have had coughs and when a child coughs alot their lungs swell up and yes it can be painful and uncomfortable. What our doctor and actually every doctor I have ever seen, even the after hour pediatrician have done nebulizer treatments on all 3 of them. The nebulizer is a machine you buy from the doctor and the doctor prescribes medicine that the child breaths in. The treatments help with the cough and normally clear it up.Over the counter cough medicines don't work. Please for the sake of your child go to another doctor and mention the nebulizer and the bad cough. Everytime I go that is the first thing the doctor askes me is if I am doing the treatments and when was the last time. They gave me a year supply of medicine and I am suppose to use it everytime they have a bad cough.

I've heard of people using a mixture of lemon juice and honey, but check with your ped just to make sure she can have honey. You can give her motrin or tylenol for the pain. I also use a cool mist humidifier...put her close by if she get wet from it, that's fine. That will help break up the congestion. We also take lots of baths and let the shower get the bathroom nice and streamy then just sit in there for about 20 min. Give her lots of ice pops and fluids, but very little milk b/c it makes the congestion worse. If she starts to have an unproductive cough without anything coming up or if it sounds dry then I would take her back to the ped. It could settle in her chest. Hang in there before you know it she will be well again.
God Bless,
R.

This worked my 3 year old's most recent cough: Children's Cough and Bronchial Syrup from B&T (Boerickle and Tafel). I got it at my local health food store.
Oh, the vicks on the feet like on the post below worked. I tried it the night that the coughing was making her unable to stay asleep. After I put the generic vaporub on her feet and put socks on her, she stayed asleep.

Hi C.,

I feel your pain! My son has a really bad one too. The nurse at his ped's office said the cough has been the worst part of the cold thats been going around...however, Jayden ALWAYS gets a really bad cough. SO at the advice of two friends who are respiratory therapists, I bought a cool mist humidier. It was about $35 at Walmart. All you do is plug it in at night, next to the baby's bed. It is very quiet, and it definitely helps! I use it every night now, and it really helps Jayden sleep & get thru the night without coughing so much. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't stop it completely...but it helps! Good luck! :)

I know what u mean. I have a 15 month old & she got sick on Halloween. I ran out & picked up 2 products from a natural company called "Hylands". They have a cough med & a nose med & it worked great for her. Also, a vaporizer is a good idea. Good luck & just remember she'll be up & running in no time.

C.,

When my son gets that way my pediatrican usually prescribes a cough medicine. My advice to you. Find a different doctor. There is no need for your child to suffer through a cough like that and as a doctor they should know better. I am just a mom but heaven knows if it were there child you know they would not let them just cough it out for more than 5 days.

Change doctors.

Good luck.

Hi did you try rubbing the VICKS on the bottom of her feet and put a pair of socks on (during bedtime). It will give her some relief with the cough, you might have to do it for a couple of days. You may also want to try Honey and Lime too soothe her throat. I hope this brings some relief, let me know if it works for your daughter!

Since your daughter is past her 1 year mark, I recommend giving her a tsp of honey at least once a day. The honey naturally soothes the throat to help keep the coughing from happening.

I believe Guaifenesin Syrup is considered safe for babies. It is not a cough suppressant which I think is considered bad for babies but it thins mucus and allows it to be coughed out easier. Have always given it to my kids. Ask your doctor if your baby can have Guaifenesin.

Did you rub the Vicks on her feet - I was told that if you did it could relieve the cough for hours. Also I copied this from another email -

COLDS:
Those suffering from common or severe colds should take one tablespoon
lukewarm honey with 1/4 spoon cinnamon powder daily for three days. This
process will cure most chronic cough, cold, and clear the sinuses.

It is worth a try.

You can also try giving her ice chips or frozen juice for her to suck on to help with the sore throat.
