My 14 month old has a case of diarrhea. I am keeping her hydrated and changing her diaper every 5-10 minutes, but she is developing a HORRIBLE diaper rash. Her poor little but is just so red and raw. Since Sunday, I have tried every diaper cream on the market as well as some prescription stuff the pediatrician gave me (Vusion) and I have tried soaking her in an oatmeal bath. Nothing is bringing her any relief. Afer every diaper change she just sobs and sobs and about the time she calms down she has pooped again and I have to change her again. I am at a loss. How do I make my baby feel better?
Thank you so much for all of your suggestions. We weathered the storm, and her rash has cleared up as the diarrhea has subsided. I did find the most helpful product was good old fashions Johnson's baby powder
Hope you are giving her lots of Pedialyte (sic) Also, use sits baths....(simply warm water) several times a day and keep that cream going. I had good luck with Gold Bond for Babies. Good luck...if the diarrhea does not subside today...I would call that doctor back and insist on some relief!
My pediatrician recommended Dyprotex. It's alaivable everywhere. It was the only thing that worked when my son had THE worst case. His skin actually was burned and ended up peeling off his bottom. I always used vaseline at every change but that didn't work nor did 3-4 other name brands with zinc. Dyprotex worked almost immediately and really coated well. Good luck.
My 9 month old went through this too. It was terrible. It looked like she was bleeding because she was so raw. I tried all types of ointments including Desitin and something stronger called Triple Paste (the Triple Paste costs $10 a tube) that the doctor told me to get that was over the counter but even that didn't help. Finally the doctor prescribed SSD 1% Cream (1% Silver Sulfadiazine Cream)and that helped almost instantly. I have one at home and one for the daycare in case it ever gets bad like that again. The doc said that sometimes a bad viral infection can cause that kind of rash through diarrhea and sometimes even antibiotics can cause it. Anyway. She doesn't suffer from that anymore. Again, it's prescription strength so your doctor would have to prescribe it. Be adament when you call the pediatrician that your baby needs it.

I just went through this with my 22 month old. I used powder (with cornstarch) at every changing and it seemed to help. I also used some vaseline. I would put a little (not much) powder than the vaseline. It seemed to work better than the diaper creams and oatmeal baths. I got this rememdy online (googled it). They even have vaseline in a tube now! My daughter was screaming with every changing as well - I felt horrible - but this helps clear it up within a day or two.

Our (not so) little guy is almost 13 months old. This happened to him two months ago. He was so miserable and just screamed and could not be consoled at diaper changes, and he is normally such a happy baby. This was far worse for him than teething. We used Boudreaux's Butt Paste, which cleared it up in a few days. While it took several days for the rash to clear up entirely, he stopped being miserable within a day or so of starting this treatment. The doctor also prescribed an antifungal cream for use on every third change, but I think it was the Butt Paste that did the trick.
mix up a paste of cornstarch and liquid maalox (flavorless if you can find it) and smear that on with a cotton ball. I like to mix up a little tupperware container full and keep it at my changing station, since you will be using it often. This is the only thing that helped my son when he was suffering from diaper rash after being on antibiotics.
I was told the best cream is the one with the most Zinc. After lots of label reading Destin ORIGINAL has the most. Also have you questions rotavirus?
Hi. I know you said you have tried every diaper cream available, however, have you tried the 40% zinc oxide Desitin that comes in a round jar? Recently I found it at Target. I thought all diaper rash creams had around the same amount of zinc oxide - active ingredient - until I picked up the jar to read the label. It works wonders.
