Banner Desert Maternity Packages

Hello. I was wondering if anyone has paid entirely out-of-pocket for the delivery of their child at Desert Banner. I called and they offer 3 OB packages, but I wondered if they will allow payments on that, or if it has to be paid on the delivery day? I left a message with billing and have not heard back yet. We currently have insurance, but I didn’t realize it only covers up to $2500 maximum for all maternity costs, period! In my experience, the insurance companies are getting more greedy each year.

What can I do next?

I also had an 80/20 type of insurance when I had my son last Jan at Chandler Regional Hosp. What never occured to me was that it seemed that everyone that touched me, sent me their own bill. There were even bills for providers I had no clue who what they were for. Just keep in mind, that if another dr assits your dr (probalby the case if you have a c-seciton) they will send a bill, the anesthesiologist, the pediatrician, the lab work, the hospital room, the nursery, etc all billed separately in my case and I had a bill for each of them. Just something to keep in mind in case it might affect you. Also, I do belive Banner Desert is one of the more expensive hospitals in the east valley, if you have the option, you may want to look into other hospitals.

Since no one's responded yet, I can offer my experience for what it's worth -- I was at Banner Good Sam, and have 80/20 insurance (20% of costs out of pocket). What they did was make me pay about $500 before I left (deductible plus a little), then billed the rest later. They sent me a bill for $3500, billed the insurance company for $11,000, insurance wrote that down to about $5000, cut them a check for 80%, and I ended up owing them another $300. So, since you'll notice that there were at least three relevant totals for how much my stay cost, a key question for you would be how your insurance company calculates that $2500. (None of that, by the way, counts the epidural, my doctor, or the pediatrician visits, which was another $700, most of which had similar changes between what was billed and what was paid.)

Hi L.,
My son was born 3 weeks ago and because of the lack of insurance we took advantage of the maternity package at banner desert. I had to pay for the 72 hour c-section, and although I left after 48 hours, we were not given a refund. Their policy is to have the package paid in full by the time you leave the hospital. They do not allow you to set up a payment plan. I went in before my delivery and paid in full so I could have a receipt on hand at the hospital. Unfortunately we have received two large bills from the hospital that we are disputing. We're still at the early stages of this process so I wish I had more concrete advice, but I will keep you posted if you're interested. Good luck!

Hi L.! I am curious too as to how much things cost. We are expecting next summaer and will delivery at Banner Desert. My insurance reduces the billing to their contracted amount, or allowed amount. I am obligated for 100% of the allowed amount, up to my deductible of $2,500. Under Aetna, they showed you how much everything cost. The fee for the OB appeared to be $1,800. Like the other respondant, I don't believe that includes the epidural or much of the "extras." You should be able to contact your insurance Company. Based on who your providers are and what kind of delivery you expect (based on your last), they should be able to assist you in some way to estimate the cost. Hope this helps! Good Luck! Please let me know what you find out...

Hi L. -

I don't know if another hospital is an option. But I do know that we almost ran into the same problem when I was about to have our twins via c-section! Mercy Gilbert was phenominal! They offered us 3 different packages as well and did in fact allow payments. I hope this helps.
