Best Dog Crate

Typically, a dog will not potty where he sleeps (in his crate). You want a crate that is big enough for him to lay comfortably and be able to turn around. If he's a large breed puppy, you can get a wire crate that allows you to increase the size he will be in as he grows. HTH!

We just got a puppy in Aug. and I can say if they are not old enough to be fully potty trained it will be hard to keep them from stepping on their mess. It is just really hard to hold it for that long if he is still not fully housebroken. I don't know if any crate that can keep him from stepping in it, but you might want to buy a travel one. The wire ones are sometimes a much bigger mess to clean up since the poop can get outside of the crate when he walking on it. I have both my dog likes the wire one better (he can see more). You could also try to buy a bigger one and put a piddle pad on one side so if they have to go they might just use that and stay on the clean side.

You might try a round circle type gate. We have one that is a strong plastic and we used it with our puppy. You can make it into whatever shape you want- circle, rectangle. This way you can put newspaper down or have it in the yard where the puppy can go potty and still have a sleeping area as well.

PetsMart and Petco should have something like this. I think I got it at one of thee stores. Also Foster and Smith has a great catalog where you can order something like this also.
I would use a crate when your puppy is a little older. Use the other "pen" until the puppy starts jumping and getting out of it.

I agree with Jessica about them not pottying where they sleep, I have a 90lb shepherd who has a wire kennel in our kitchen and then I have a 2lb chihuahua who sleeps in the cats kennel. I always let mine out first thing in the morning to go potty and run around and don't put them back up until I'm ready to walk out the door that gives them a couple of hours of exercise but mine sleep in kennels during the night too
