Best Tricycle?

My husband and I want to buy our daughter a tricycle for Christmas- she'll be 21 months by Christmas. We've looked at the ones that have the handle for the parents to push and ones without. I've also seen reviews on some that tip over. I just wanted to get votes from all you mama's and the pro's and cons with trikes you've bought for your kids.

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! My husband was shopping and found what I hope will be the perfect little trike for our little pricess. I read quite a few reviews on the Radio Flyer that said it tipped over a lot- maybe they should stick with wagons :) Anyway, we ended up with the Disney Pricess Canopy Trike. It has as removable push bar, a canopy for the sun, a water bottle for mom and child and of course a little bell. I think she'll love it!

I think it depends on how much you want to spend. My daughter will be 2 in a week and a half and we just got her the Fisher Price Rock, Roll n Ride tricycle. I did a lot of research online and read tons of reviews and this one seemed to be the best one for smaller kids. My daughter still can't quite reach the pedals (very close though), but she loves to scoot around on it using her feet to push her. It also has a handle on the back so that we can push her. A lot of the other ones we looked at were way too big for her and it would have been a really long time before she was able to reach the pedals. It was really cheap at WalMart (less than $35) and the seat is adjustable, so it can grow with them. The box says it is ages 2-5. Also, it's pretty low to the ground, so we haven't had any trouble with it tipping over yet.

The other really great trike that we saw was the Kettler. They are a lot more money (around the $90-100 range) and we decided we decided we didn't want to spend that much on a tricycle for her. However, my friend's twin boys had that brand and they were great for them. They just turned 5 and have big bikes now with training wheels, but they still ride their trikes sometimes, so it may be worth it since it lasts so long.

The biggest difference between the two is that the Kettler ones are metal with rubber tires and the Fisher Price one is plastic with plastic tires. I read that the plastic tires don't get the greatest traction, but it's very flat where we live, so we don't have any problems with that. If you live where there are any hills, you may want to go with the kind with the rubber wheels. Like I said...both got great reviews, so I would just say to search on Amazon.com or something for tricycles and read the reviews for each of them to see what the pros and cons are. Best of luck and Merry Christmas!

My youngest just had an old fashioned red tricycle, and it was wonderful. I think she tipped over one time out of all of the times that she played with it, and that was because she was riding as fast as she could, and doing crazy things on it. LOL!

My son received the Radio Flyer (red one) last year for his 2nd birthday. I hate the tricycle and it does tip over. Also, the Radio Flyer is hard to pedal. He does well going backwards but has to work very hard to go forward. Tonight I bought him a bike with training wheels for Christmas. I hope he likes it!!

hmmm
go to TRU's website and read the write ups that consumers do.
We got the Radio Flyer small one and were never really impressed. I have heard great things about Kettler (sp) that you can hold a pole and push till the get it. That sounds odd, but I'm hoping you know what I mean.

ANyway... good luck.

We got our daughter the Radio Flyer Sport Trike with push bar for her 2nd birthday. She absolutely loves it. It has a push bar that you can actually steer with. She doesn't have the concept pedaling yet, but she'll just place her feet on the pedals while I push. Once she figures out how to pedal we can remove the push bar & she'll be able to do it all by herself. The seat is also adjustable so it will grow with them. We haven't had any problems with it at all, we've been very pleased with it. We got ours at ToyR'Us. Here is a link that will show the pic & give some more reviews for it http://www.buzzillions.com/prd-310456-radio-flyer-steer-a....

We had the rock roll ride one that isn't very expensive. It worked well for us. Really, at that age, they can't truly do a trike, but mine LOVED to rock, and so it's great in that way. The other thing about the pushing with the parent's "pole" or handle, is that you can't actually steer for them. So, it can be maddening when you push them and they keep going into the grass, over and over and over again. Not exactly the happy smiling scene you see on the box. So, we used it in the rocking stage, and it was also perfectly fine when they were around three, and became tricycling maniacs. It could go fast, turn fast, and was great. Traction wasn't wonderful, but was fine for us. I've seen people who live in hillier areas who put duct tape around the front wheel to help with that.
