Bleeding After a Miscarriage

Hi Ladies,
I had a miscarriage about 3 1/2 weeks ago and I am still experiencing some bleeding. I was about 5 weeks pregnant when the miscarriage occurred. I did not have a D&C. I had a follow up ultrasound a week after the miscarriage and the doctor said everything looked fine. He just said if the bleeding does not stop to return to see him. Well, the bleeding has not completely stopped, but it has lighted up significantly (similar to my end of period bleeding); however, it has been like this for a little over a week. I called the doctor and he explained that this was normal. I was just wondering if someone else has experienced anything similar? Thanks for the support!

So What Happened?

After a month, the bleeding has finally stopped. I am waiting to have a normal menstrual cycle and then my husband and I will be trying again! :) Thank you for all the kind words and for easing my mind. It was very reassuring!

Hi there,
A similar thing happened to me. It turned out that the DandC was not complete and there was some fetal tissue left in there. I had to have another DandC.....hope that helps.

Hi N.,

I'm very sorry for your loss. It's hard for me every time and I've had 3 miscarriages...2 prior to my son and 1 after I had him. My first two lasted over 8 weeks but my third one was quick and over in a couple weeks. I don't know why that would be since with my son, I had a c-section so it's not like my body had really been through a vaginal birth to get it more up to speed. It's all a big mystery to me the way life works. Take care of yourself and give your daughter a hug. Peace.

I'm so sorry - I had three miscarriages (all around 5 to 7 weeks) before I had my daughter so I know how you feel.

I remember bleeding for many weeks after my miscarriages. That end of the period light brown bleeding for awhile is normal too. I remember that. It'll take around 6 to 8 weeks for your body to ovulate again and get things back to normal. You should be fine. I would be a little more worried if it was bright red and you had cramping.

Hi N.,

Yes, this is very normal what you are going thru right now. I've had 3 miscarraiges and with 2 no d&c and the last one I did have the d&c. You can actually bleed/spot for up to 3-4 weeks when you dont have the d&c.
Take Care, C.

Hi N.,

I'm so sorry for your loss. I had a miscarriage at about the same gestation and I, too, bled for longer than they told me to expect. Like you, it was a natural miscarriage, ultrasound looked OK, etc. I had spotting for a couple of weeks, I think (this was several years ago) and a positive pregnancy test I think about 2-3 weeks after the miscarriage.

I also had a weird bout of bleeding 2 or three weeks after everything stopped. It was a couple of days of rather heavy bright discharge, then a normal period a few weeks after that.

I would guess that if your bleeding is getting lighter, you're probably just fine, though check back with your dr. if you have more concerns.

Also, just so you know, one usually has a spike in fertility for a few months following a miscarriage. If you are wanting to get pregnant right away, talk to your dr and wait a for one or two normal cycles. After trying almost a year for the first pregnancy, I conceived and again the first month of trying and have a healthy 4-year-old.

Best of luck to you and your family.
C.

It's normal. I bled for nearly 4.5 weeks and everything was fine. I got pregnant again right away and am due in less than 1 week. Good Luck

Hi N.,
I'm sorry for your loss. I'm going through the same thing at the moment (I had a miscarriage 3 weeks ago, and am still having light bleeding), so was just going to offer you support, but it looks like you have some great replies from the mamas on here already. Wishing you all the best.

I've had two miscarriages in the last five months. The first I bleed for two weeks, stoped, then again for two more weeks. The second I bleed for two weeks, but not as heavy. Our hormones get crazy....i think there just trying to regulate them selves. Hope you are doing ok. I know what your going thru. Hang in there:) J.
