Bleeding in Pregnancy

Hi ladies. I need some help putting my mind at ease. I'm pregnant with my second child currently 9 wks 5 days. At 6 wks 5 days I went to the ER for spotting/cramping/back pain. They did an ultrasound and the baby was fine in the uterus and had a heart beat. It turned out the bleeding was caused by a bladder infection. Well now the spotting/cramping has returned. I've had pretty awful morning sickness as well and now have a cold on top of it. I'm hoping there is nothing wrong with the baby. Maybe the bladder infection has returned. My question is how many of you ladies experienced spotting/cramping in first trimester? Is this pretty normal? I have a doctors appt in two days. Do you think I should wait or do I need to go to the ER again? Thanks for any responses!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone who responded! We had our first OB appt and another ultrasound. The baby appears to be perfectly fine. :) So I'm a little more at ease. I'm still spotting some but have been trying to take it easy. Thanks for the advice. The doctor is saying that the bleeding is coming from my cervix and is not coming from the baby and that my bladder pain and cramping appears to be coming from my uterus lying traverse and on top of my bladder thanks to having a baby already and my ligaments not holding the uterus up as well as with my first. So for now I'm just hoping to get feeling better so I can enjoy this pregnancy more.

As someone who has had 2 misscaraiges in 9 months, I would say that any time you have bleeding, go to the ER. Don't wait for your appt.

With my 5th and 6th I had spotting until about 12-15 weeks. I suggest seeking medical advice. Both of my pregnancies ended with beautiful little girls. My midwives did have me apply a progesterone cream to my abdomen to help with the spotting. If you seek medical advice and don't like what they say remember you can always get a second opinion. A second opinion can either give you peace about the first diagnosis or offer up a completely different diagnosis and treatment plan.

Hi M.,

Before my pregnancy I bled about 25 out of 30 days (what a pain!). My system has always been out of whack. When I was pregnant, I too, experienced bleeding throughout the 1st trimester (and 2nd). Like you, I was super worried and my docter performed numerous ultrasounds (all times her heartbeat was strong). My daughter was born perfectly healthy and now my body is back to "normal." I have a regular 5 day cycle like everyone else. You will continue to worry even though many people have experienced your same situation. Best wishes...it's an exciting time!

Hi M.,

I actually had some spotting several times during my last pregnancy - the first @ 7 weeks. I called the doctor and they had me come in for an ultrasound. As it turns out, the placenta had torn slightly away and caused some minor spotting. Anyhow, just took it easy and everything was fine. I spotted a few other times, mostly when I think I was just overdoing it.

Take some time and take it easy... I would give your doctor a call and they can do an ultrasound in the office/rather than the ER.. much less stressful.

I'm sure you both will be fine. Good luck to you!!!
