Yes! My first-born did this, while my second child only would go every few days -- yet they were both completely breastfed. Just goes to show that variety is the spice of life. :-)

Hi S.-

Newborns can have MANY BM's daily, especially if you are breastfeeding.

Today's worry too much poop. Tomorrow's worry will be too little. Motherhood is GREAT = )

Yes, very normal. There may be a time that it slows down as eating habits change but any healthy person, adult or child, should "go" about one hour after every meal. Anything less can cause all sorts of chronic issues and even major diseases down the road.

Congratulations on your little one! It's an adventure!

Totally normal. My son pooped tons of times a day until he was about 6 weeks old. And then at that point it can be totally normal for baby to stop pooping for days at a time if they are breastfed. Just to give you a heads up on that. Mine stopped for about 5 or 6 days, then started having blowouts every few days. The poop rollercoaster is so much fun. First you do a dozen dirty diapers a day, then you do one a week and it is like the whole week's worth saved up! Usually they regulate to once or twice a day when they start solids.

it's a good sign, it means baby is getting enough liquid and nutrition. Newborns should poop an average of 6 times a day. If they don't, it's time to worry!

If you're BFing, it is a good sign that your baby is getting a good milk supply. It is also a sign of how fantastically digestable the milk is to him/ her.

This will change within a couple of months. By the time my breastfed baby was 4 months old, he was only pooping twice a month, which is OK for a BFed baby of that age.

Congrats on your new baby!

My son had BM after every feeding when he was a newborn too. This is esprecially true of breastfed babies.

Oh yeah. It's normal. In addition, the color can change quite dramatically throughout the first year and a half. This is also normal, for it will change depending on the foods being consumed. Now, at least for formula fed, if your child is having less than BM a day - that's not good. It shows signs of dehydration and/or that the formula is not being mixed correctly, or that the formula is not for your child, or that there may be a food sensitivity (like to lactose or gluten).

Congrats on your membership to motherhood. It's a bumpy ride. So, just hold on!

Yes. The digestive process kicks in as soon as food goes into the mouth. This affects the whole digestive system, stimulating the process 'on the back end as well as the front end'. Some babies are more consistant than others with actually producing solids shortly following each feeding. Because of this, when they're infants, I usually wait about 10-15 minutes after a feeding to change them, instead of before. When they're toddlers, they'll usually be ready to sit on the potty around the same time (10-15 minutes after the meal), but by that time (18 months on), they may have tapered off to having a bowel movement after a specific meal or snack, and only once a day.

Yes! Especially if you are breastfeeding. The only thing you may want to pay attention to is if the color is getting green (vs. yellow)- it may mean baby is getting too much milk. It took me forever to figure this out but once I cut back a small bit with my first baby we were both happier. If your precious newborn does have bright green poops you may want to read this article on overproduction and forceful letdown it really helped me.

Most likely just a super healthy normally pooping new baby! Good luck! Congratulations!

Yes, especially if you're breastfeeding. They firm up and slow down gradually until they start eating 'real food', then they firm up and slow down even more.

Oh yes, especially breastfed babies. And then there will be times when they wont go for a day or two or longer. First they get rid of that black meconium and then it starts turning to yellow.

Congratulations!!

Yes! Check it out on one of the mamma websites. There are only a few 'not- normal' bowel movements in newborns, (like blood, as an example) since some kids squirt a little at each feeding and other save it up for one daily explosion!!!!
