I have a ten year old that only wants to play football. Any suggestions for me, other than baseball? North valley? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Look into the variety of sports offered at Arizona Sports Complex (ASC) at 35th Ave and Pinacle Peak. He could try indoor soccer (very fast paced), basketball, lacrosse, roller hockey. They have relatively short sessions so he can try different things.

The Foothills Recreation Center (55th and Union Hills?) has monthly martial arts classes such as Judo.

What about individual sports such as swimming, roller skating, skateboarding or BMX. My boys took roller skating classes and skateboarding lessons once and loved it. They also raced BMX bikes at Black Mountain BMX.

My son found tremendous enjoyment in lacrosse, which is a fairly new sport to Arizona. It is fast-paced, like socccer, develops good hand-eye coordination (because you use a stick with a pocket to pass the ball), it's physical (like football, they wear pads, but the rules are very strict about how and where players can "hit") and the lacrosse community of families is very strong and supportive. Check out this video about local high school lacrosse (there are middle-school leagues, too). Look for links to local resources at the bottom of the page: http://www.raisingarizonakids.com/index.php?page=2.video....

Have you thought of swimming or diving ? I believe there is a swim team that uses the pool at the Arrowhead Country Club (but don't have to be a member). Tennis would be a good sport with good hand and eye coordination. Gymnastics is offered for boys at Oasis Gymnastics (Bell & 101). They have recreational and teams for boys for gymnastics and tumble & tramp. They have a boy in tumble and tramp who will be going to Worlds this fall. Gymnastics is a good base sport for any other sport he may want to go into. It requires great strength and conditioning - no, not just a girly sport.

Hi,
My soon to be 9 yr old plays Lacrosse! We live @ 7th St and Union Hills and he plays for Glendale Lacrosse.
My husband was a football player in H.S. and because of it swore that our boys would never play. I happen to think Lacrosse is way better. Our coach is a wonderful guy who really cares about the kids. He took our son on to play when he was only 7 and no other Lacrosse league would take him. He has given our son such confidence and self esteem. We really have become a Lacrosse family.
Also, our 5 year old is about to start Cal Ripken Jr. Dynamite baseball. That is another group where the most important thing is that the kids have fun. I won't go anywhere else for baseball either.
Hope this helped, feel free to contact me here if you have any questions!

There is also gokart racing. There is Phoenix Kart Racing Association (PKRA) at 43rd Ave & Pinnacle Peak. You have to have your own kart but they race twice a month and are open for practice Tues-Fri 6-10pm, Sat 9-1pm, 5-10pm & Sun 9-1pm. They can start racing at age 5. There are a ton of kids that do it & love it!
