BRAT Diet (How Long to Keep Up)

My 15 month old is getting over a nasty stomach virus (because of which she was admitted to the hospital for dehydration for a couple days) and has been eating a lot of bannanas, rice, applesauce ect..

Her stools are now 'mushy messy' and only 1 or 2x/day, no longer pure liquid and 10x/day like they were a couple days ago. We've started adding simple bland foods to her diet like potatoes, pancakes, eggs (she has always been a picky eater so its hard to find things she will eat). I am unsure when to start adding her favorite foods (mostly dairy products) back into her diet. What about milk, can I start adding that back in? Should I add one dairy product per day? is that long enough to wait in between? how much of the dairy product can she have, (ie cottage cheese which she loves) a little bit, or a normal helping? What about fresh fruit, can I start adding that back in?

PS she is a tiny little thing and I want her to GAIN, not lose, weight!!

What can I do next?

I wouldask her doctor that, but if her stools are still soft then I would wait another day before adding anything. I would also stop the eggs, becuase they can cause diarreah. Try adding a probiotic yogurt into her dit. She will get fat and calcium, and the probiotics will help her tummy.

Good luck!

I'd go with the yogurt, too, if you can get her to eat it.

Dairy is probably okay, but if she has had severely liquid, it will take a while for her to be able to digest this normally again. Humans can't technically digest dairy - we have little bacteria in our intestines that help us do this (which is what "lactose intolerance" really is - folks with this, for whatever reason, don't host that particular bacteria very well). Sometimes with severe diarrhea, that bacteria gets "washed out." It'll come back, but the probiotics in yogurt are one of the sources for that bacteria, so that will help boost the colony. (It's also why antibiotics give you an upset tummy - it kills good bacteria as well as bad.)

I'm glad to see she's feeling a little better, and I hope she's back on track quickly!

'Our dr says to only keep the BRAT diet for about a week, then slowly transition them back to reg diet. I would call your Dr.

Ps... are you sure it was a virus? Our DS did that when he was introduced to fluid milk...and now can no longer have any dairy. :0(

I would add dairy last, when her stools become normal. There are children's probiotics available that might help her before she gets the yogurt back.
