I am getting ready to have my second baby as most of you may know. I have also recently went back to work from my frist son. Anyhow, I will be nursing this child as well and i was wondering if any of you could give me a review on a good automatic breast pump. Any advice or information would be wonderful.

What can I do next?

I rented a Medela Symphony pump with my third. It's a hospital grade double pump and it ended up costing about $75/month plus a one time $50 fee for the starter kit. I can't say enough good things about it. I absolutely loved it. I really researched it and when I discovered it is the pump used at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia I decided it had to be at least worth giving a try. I was really happy with it. It is super easy to use and traveled well. I also had the Medela Swing for short trips. Liked that too but definitely not for full-time pumping. Best of luck with whatever you decide!

I have a dual Ameda electric pump. I read reviews on line, and Ameda seemed to get better review than Medela. It's worked great for me!

While i was breastfeeding i always used Medela the automatic ones and they are so very convienent. Most of the ones that you can purchase look like i little suitcase that you would carry a laptop in so you wouldnt have to worry about people looking at you funny! And they are so easy to use...it really worked very well for me! You can pump seperate or both at the same time and they have many different speeds and strenghts. I used this when i started going back to work and school. it worked wonders! I hope you find something that works well for you
! Good luck!

I used the Medela Pump 'n Style for my daughter. She had to be monitored with her amounts in the begining and never would nurse after using the bottle. I pumped with that, solely for 13 months. I would pump up to 8 times a day. I had gotten so far ahead that I had half a freezer full. I have nothing but rave reviews.

I'd go and rent a hospital grade pump. I have a medela pump in style that I used with my kids, but rented a hospital grade Medela pump with my last child because I wasn't with him enough to breastfeed him. Anyway, it was very efficient. Our insurance covered costs of it, but maybe that's because our son was in the NICU, but maybe it wasn't. Chekc it out!

I used the Medela Pump`N Style (dual pump). Worked great for work and was discreet and quick. Definetly get a motorized dual pump for work...cuts down on time needed and both breasts are done at once.

I have the Medela In Style double pump. It was great! I was pumping 4 times a day, and it was really easy to use. I had the tote bag, but they come in backpack too I think. They are expensive, but the replacement stuff is not really, and it is definitely worth the money IMO. Hope this helps!

Hi. If you haven't bought/rented a pump yet, I have a brand new one I'm looking to sell. I planned on breast feeding, but was advised not to so I never even opened the box it was shipped in. It's a Madella double electronic pump (I think the backpack version, but I'd have to open the box and double check). It's just been sitting in my daughters closet unopened for 6 mos. I was going to post it on ebay, but if you're interested, please let me know.

I use the Medela Pump in Style Advance. I love it. MommyGear.com has awesome prices on pumps ($229 for the Pump in Style + free shipping). They also have spare parts, a huge selection of nursing bras, and great advice and support. I just wish they had longer hours so I don't have to wait until Saturday morning when I need to pick something up.

I used Medela Pump In Style Advance with my first child, and we burned through it. With my second child I bought a rental pump from the local LLL lady that rented the hospital-grade one out. She moved and I bought it. It works great. We're not having more kids and I'm willing to part with it. It's completely sanitary compared to buying used from e-Bay. I got the piston, tubes, and nippleshields/bottles from www.mybreastpump.com. That sight is fantastic and she's great with recommendations. Very experienced with pumps and models.

I have a Medela Pump in Style Advanced that is a few years old. It's a double pump, it works great and I'll be using it for my second child too, but if you can afford it, I'm sure by now that Medela has come out with a newer model. They also have new and used ones on eBay. The new ones are even cheaper than you would buy new in the store. I've heard nothing but good things about Medela and this one was so much easier to use than the Medela manual pump. Especially if you're working and need to pump quickly.

Hello. I pumped when I had to go back to work with my first and (she was 5 months) and am planning on doing the same with my second due in Feb. I have a Medela Pump in Style that worked great that I am planning on using again. Which ever pump you choose, I highly recommed the nursing bras that have an extra panel that allow you to pump both sides, hands free. It was a lifesaver even just to have the few minutes to read a magazine. (perish the thought!) I got mine from the la leche league web site. Wherever you get one, it is a must and make sure it has two panels. Good luck. -N. J

I used the Medela pump and it was fantastic. Yes, it's a bit more expensive, but it was worth every penny. I would definitely suggest you go with the double pump though. I bought the single "on-the-go" pump and ended up feeling like I could have, um, gotten more done (if you will) had I had the double pump. With a single you'd have to pump twice as long to get the same amount of milk that you'd get from a double. Just my two cents though.

If you are going back to work or plan on using the pump frequently then I would suggest the Medela Pump In Style Double Electric Pump. It is the most industrious pump you can buy, without renting a hospital grade pump. The only real complaint that I have is that the bag started to fall apart (literally coming apart at the seams) only a few months after I bought it. I take it to work 5 days a week, but I don't think that I'm that hard on it. So I called the company and they sent me a replacement bag for free (the pump motor can be taken out of the bag). However, the bag is falling apart again.

My other suggestion is to get the backpack style if you are going to have to carry it around a lot because it is heavy, especially once you have the bottles and accessories packed in it. I changed jobs and now take the train into the city and have to walk 5 blocks to work, and my shoulder is paying the price. Now I try to leave it at work if at all possible, which has left me in the lurch a couple of times.

It is a good pump and the common accessories you need are sold at lots of stores, including Target. Hope this helps.

Congrats on the baby!

If there is any way that you can afford it, or have some people chip in, I highly reccomend the Medela Freestyle. Incredible pump!!!!!!!!!
If not, the Medela Pump in Style is also an excellent pump & is the "gold standard" (or was, until the Freestyle came out!) for working moms.

HTH!

Hi and congrats on second baby!! I do not remember the brand name of the pump I used, but I paid around $40. (There are different types and price ranges available.) BUT, I used it twice and went back to the hand held one they gave me at the hospital. It honestly seemed like more of a hastle than the manual pump. I regretted even spending the money on it, and you can't return stuff like that....!!!! I know everyone is different, but I wanted you to be aware of my experience. Good luck!!!

I responded to a request from Oct. 22, 2008 -"what's the best breastpump for working moms?". There was a lot of great advice posted from everybody. I recommend that you check it out in addition to the responses you get. It's easy to find this and other related requests by clicking on "Requests and Responses" at the top of the page, then clicking on the subject on the left side ("Newborns & Infants", then "Breastfeeding & Lactation"). God bless you and your family!

I agree with the other moms-- hospital pump if you can afford it/insurance covers it, a Freestyle or Pump in Style if not. I'd also look into the medela bras that let you pump "hands free"...

Congrats!
