My 2 1/2 year old daughter has an upper respiratory infection with wheezing and some fast breathing. They put her on breathing treatments with xopenex solution. This is an inhalation solution...I've noticed that she isn't eating and her behavior is not good...she is irritable, fussy, not listening, hitting...etc. All things that is very unlike her personality. Has anyone experienced this as a side effect of using this solutino with the breathing treatments?

What can I do next?

My 11mo is currently on these breathing treatments for RSV...she isn't eating as much as normal, either, but that is it. My friend's son, who was a ore-teen when he took it for asthema over10years ago said it used to make his heart race. My older daughter took it for Rsv also with no real side-effects I can remember. It seems the aide effects are different depending on the child. We have always had good luck with it,though.

Good luck!

the solution you are giving your daughter is a steroid to help open up her airways. Every medication affects people and children different ways. Since you are giving her a type of steroid, be sertain that it will cause side effects! My son who is on the same "RAD coctail" (we like to call it), gets extremely wound up and hyper. I've found that if i am able to give it to him while he's sleeping (lol) he wakes up with no side effects. My son is also 2 1/2, i'm not sure what type of equipment you are using, but we are using an inhaler with a spacer- NOT the loud machines where you mix the meds up. It is easier, faster, and QUIET! lol So I am able to give it to him while he's sleeping and he never knows ;)
good luck and God bless

yes, it is VERY common for steroid treatments to cause undesirable behavior! just try to grin and bear, it will pass when the treatments are over!

Hello D.,

Yes, you're right! the breathing treaments affect her behavior. have you read the informational insert? I hope your daughter is doing better and that she doesn't need those for long. ask your doctor about a magnesium ointment to supplement the breathing treatment. also google magnesium and asthma. Good luck! ~C.~

First lets get this clear, xopenex is NOT a steroid! She probably is not eating b/c she doesn't feel good. Her irritable behavior could be associated with the xopenex especially if she's getting frequent treatments, but typically xopenex is not supposed to have the same side effects as albuterol.
