I was just wondering what an average weekly budget for groceries would be for a family of 4. My kids are 4 an 14 months. For those of you who have a budget with a similar family size, can you help me out with this. We want to set up a budget, but we don't want to over fund it or under fund it. Thanks!

I have an almost 4 year old (in Jan.) and a 13 month old. We budget $450 for most months but $500 for November (bec. of Thanksgiving) & $550 for December (for Christmas party, etc.). We are probably on the low end of what you will hear considering diapers, wipes, and formula (when we used it) came out of this as well (contact solution, shampoos, etc.) too. Good luck!

Hi S.,

I have two boys (a 20 month old and a 2 month old) and a 12 year old step-son that is here about 4 days a month. We budget $680 a month for groceries - that includes formula, diapers, dog food, (we have two large dogs as well), and any other necessities that don't fit into any other budgeted category. We came up with that number by going over several previous month's expenses for groceries. I have also heard about grocerygame.com and am going to try it out as well. Maybe that will help lower the grocery expenses!

There are four of us, and our kids are 5 years and 20months. We buget 400$ but usually spend less and just save it for the months we spend more. If I had time to cut coupons I could probably get it down even more.

ok don't laugh at me! I am a COUPON SHOPPER!!! Ever hear of the Grocerygame??? try it out www.grocerygame.com
It tells you when to use the coupons and where! It has cut my budget is 1/2!!! My budget was $500(including diapers, wipes, cleaning supplies, all my papers, everything!) Now my budget is about $250, and I run a daycare NOW! Thanksgiving and Christmas add a little to the budget, so do birthdays, and other holidays, but with my savings and my "stock pile" it is still not over $300!!! oh if you deside to try the game email me and I'll give you my email for the referal!

S.,
Our monthly budget for our family of four (a 3 year old daughter and an 8 month old son) if $400. That includes our three dogs, weekly formula, diapers, baby food, etc. We're on the Dave Ramsey financial plan and it really helped us take a look at what we spend and where we spend it. $400 is tight for us but we really work at it and it works for us.
Let me know if you have any questions and good luck working out your budget! :)

If I am careful when I shop, and skip the goodies (junk) we can get by on 500/mo for 5 people, not including pets.. they have their own budget (2 dogs, 1 cat, 4 large birds, 4 turtles, 3 fishtanks, and a koi pond) We have a 12 yo boy and 3 yo twins. A suggestion for shopping and preparing meals it to visit www.savingdinner.com They can provide you with a monthly menu, with a shopping list for 20 or 22 meal. you buy everything, and depending on where you shop it can be anywhere from 150 to 250, prepare everything at home, and stick in the freezer for cooking later in the month!
