Can a Baby Be Too Regular?

Hi Mommy's!

My beautiful baby boy is 13 months and is very regular. Within the last 2 weeks... he has been doing # 2 at least 4-5 times daily. He loves fruit and has it often... which may be why he is so regular. I just want to make sure him moving his baby bowels so often is regular! Are their any moms out there who have experienced this? Not sure if it is relevant but the past weeks I have also been trying to ween him, drinks whole milk and he is not constipated and shows no sign of being uncomfortable.

What can I do next?

Sounds like he has healthy, active bowels to me. I am no expert, but I think as long as the consistency is not alarming, that it is actually very healthy to go that often. My boys usually go twice a day like clockwork, but they have had their days with 3 or 4+ and I am just glad their bowels are able to move so freely.

Hi A.,

I went through this with my kids, but called the Dr. when it happened with my oldest. It is actually quite normal to go that many times a day. As long as it is not watery. Whole milk if anything would have slown down the process. He sounds perfectly fine. Babies digestve tracks are much "cleaner" then ours and so they are able to "go" much sooner after they eat. Idealy, our systems would be so much better off if we could work the same way!

Hope that helped!

K.

Believe it or not this is very normal. In fact some children who have a more regimented eating cycle will do it at the same time of day every day. Children have much cleaner systems than we do. Ideally we would all process our food so efficiently.

good morning. also check the stools. i'd never really seen baby poop in a diaper before so didn't realize my daughter's was mushy (as well as being frequent). turned out she was (and is) lactose intolerant. check that possibility too. best wishes and enjoy your boy.

as long as he shows no signs of distress with the pooping, i wouldn't worry. my daughter went (and still goes) every morning first thing, she's now 6 years old. my son is the poop king and goes 3-5 times regularly throughout the day at about the same times each time. i though it would subside once he was donw breastfeeding, but he's 21 months now and hasn't nursed since 11 months :P so much for that theory. i'm sure your son is fine, but if you have any concerns call his doc.

You are blessed to have a regular boy! It would be much worse if he had problems going. Constipation is the thief of health!

My kids only seemed to get sick after they were NOT pooping regularly- so BRAVO! Give yourself (and your husband) a pat on the back!
best,
R.

Funny, I asked my ped the same question and he said it's totally normal, especially because my son, like yours, eats a lot of fruit. No worries as long as it's not loose!

Hello A.,

My little one has about 2-3 bowel movements a day. Actually, I think he has had 4 a few times. He too loves fruit. I'm sure you have mentioned it to his pediatrician? I wouldn't worry though. As long as he is healthy and doesn't seem bothered he should be okay. Most likely it has to do with his diet. Maybe the whole milk could be a factor. But I think he's okay. Good luck to you .

Yep, it's totally normal. As long as it's not runny/watery/diarrhea and isn't a funny color, your little guy's digestive system is working just perfectly. My DD is 20 months and usually poops about 3-4 times a day and my DS is almost 4 and poops 2-3 times a day. I would worry MUCH more if your son wasn't pooping as much. Constipation is a really bad thing for the overall health of a person.

So keep giving him the fruits and veggies and fiber filled foods that are keeping him regular.
