I was wondering if anybody knew if the T. Marzetti brand caramel dip would harden up for making caramel apples? I wasn't sure if it would since it is already softened.

Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thank you all for the tips & recipe! I was making mini caramel apples & even after placing them in the freezer, the caramel still "melted" away from the apples. Oh well! Maybe I'll have better luck next year.

We made caramel apples last weekend - used both the individually wrapped caramels & the T. Marzetti caramel dip as I did not have enogh caramels to make an apple for everyone. Opening each individual caramel wrapper gave the kids something to do. The T. Marzetti did not stick just on its own, but when I heated it on the stovetop with 1T of milk then coated the apples with that & put them in the freezer, it did stick nearly as well as the individual carmels.

Happy eating!

I don't think so, but you can melt regular carmel in the microwave and make them that way, it is really easy and doesn't take long at all.

i know you asked this yesterday, and since today is Halloween, it's probably too late but I don't think it will harden. I actually just made carameldip from the recipe on the Kraft bag. It's half and half mixed with the caramels. It was good, but like the Marzetti brand, it's still soft right out of the fridge. I don't think it will set up to be firm at all.
One of my favorite things to use for caramel apples are the sheets of caramel in the produce section. I buy them at Raleys http://shop.mywebgrocer.com/shop.aspx?&sid=24831309&a... The caramel is stuck to paper, so you just wrap the caramel over the apple, and I think stick the entire thing into the microwave for a few seconds and then peel the paper off. It's easy, and pretty tasty. Plus, it's not such a sticky mess.

I make caramel apples all the time and this is the best recipe and also the easiest. I hate unwrapping all the little caramels.

• 1 cup butter (no substitutes)
• 2 cups packed brown sugar
• 1 cup light corn syrup
• 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
• 2 teaspoons vanilla
• 8-10 wooden sticks
• 8-10 medium tart apples, refrigerated

Heat the butter, sugar, syrup and milk on med heat. It needs to boil to a temp. of 248-50 to ensure it will harden up.This takes about 30 minutes with occasional stirring. Remove from heat and add vanilla. Begin coating apples. Help it along with a spatula. You can dip it in toasted nuts or not and then place on parchment or a silpat to set up.

No it won't. Carmel apple dip is not a carmel apple coating. It's soft for dipping. I don't have a recipe for a coating but I'm sure you can find one on the internet...

I don't think it does... However, what I have always done for Caramel Apples is to melt the Candy Caramels in a double boiler with just a wee bit of milk. I hope that helps...

I cannot help you on that particular issue but I did want to share that there is a huge problem here in the US with any powdered milk products comming from China. It has caused Thousands of children to become ill or die. Please use caution in any candies or food products as many contain this product from China and the US is the ONLY country that the products have not been pulled off of the shelves. This is particularly disturbing since it's Halloween (we do not celebrate it) but I fear for all the children eating candies this time of year. It's also contained in many infant formulas. You can learn more below where I have posted the warning as I received it just use the links if you want to see for yourself... meanwhile make your own candies and treats when possible.

"If you missed yesterday's bulletin about
potential melamine contamination in the
US food supply, please go here:

http://www.brasschecktv.com/page/460.html

If you read yesterday's bulletin, I have
assembled a number of sources that verify
everything in that story here:

http://www.brasschecktv.com/page/462.html

Until the FDA comes clean, I recommend
that you advoid:

1. ALL manufactured food products made
in China regardless of what the listed
ingredients state.

2. The products of ANY food manufacturer
regardless of where they are based, in
the US or elsewhere, that will not clearly
state that they do not use powdered milk,
powdered eggs, or other bulk food ingredients
manufactured in China.

In its infinite wisdom, the Bush
administration and the FDA has
made the US the ONLY country on earth
that has not ordered these potentially
tainted products removed from
its shelves.

Milk products manufactured in China
and tainted with melamine, an industrial
chemical, killed and injured thousands
of children this year.

If you live in the US, you need to know
that your government is not protecting you
from these products."
