I am drastically changing my sons diet. he's 4 and we want to start cutting out all or most processed foods, dyes, and sugars, and dairy. However where do I begin??? It's so overwhelming that I feel intimidated. I looked up the closest whole food market because that place is like a dream come true for someone like me who's trying to do this, but the closest place is still very far away from me. I live in the garden city/westland area.
Does anyone know of any place like a whole foods market closer to me?
Also anyone have some good tips who is also doing this diet as well?
And am I gonna go broke for shopping at these places? I hear it's VERY expensive.

thanks as always ladies!!

What can I do next?

Baby steps..... first just start reading your labels. At the beginning I just used Meijers and went through their international eisle and they have Organic fruits and veggies. But some stuff you can start making yourself like homemade apple sauce, or bananna mini muffins, or snack mixes using cherrios and whatever your son likes. By not putting things like mold inhibitor and hifructose corn syrup into foods you are making things better. Pancakes and waffles that you make can be frozen for quicker mornings or quick dinners. Rice and Couscous work as good starches or to mix w/ meats. Soy Milk can be purchased as a substitute also at many stores. Work off of what he likes and sort of add to it and make it better. We also dry fruits and veggies on a dryer machine, make homemade fruit juices on a juicer and homemade breads. It won't be super expensive if you go slowly plus you have to figure out what your family likes and doesn't like. Plus some of this you can do w/ him and when they help they are more interested in the foods!

My family is not totally organic but we do try and we have made things better. I have found one secret is making as much as you can.

Hello there,
I shop here for much of my family's food: http://www.unitedbuyingclubs.com/
It is a once a month delivery of food, much of it is sold by the case. They have everything from flours, beans, milks, ice creams, light bulbs, bread, meat and soy etc. I belong to one that delivers in Taylor, but if that is to far, they do have other deliver sites.
And I'm sorry I made it sound above like you order directly from them, but you have to "join" an established buying club. I use the word 'join' loosely because it doesn't even cost anything, just a commitment to order every month and help out with small jobs as needed.
My email if you have anymore questions: ____@____.com
Good Luck, Chris

The closest whole foods is in Ann Arbor. I would love to shop there. Meijer specializes in organic foods as well. You can find almost anything there in organic and it's pretty reasonably priced. Good luck and I hope things go well for you. :)

I do not recommend changing it too drastically too fast or he may not eat it. I also recommend checking in with a Naturalist/ Nutritionist to make sure you are going to provide the correct foods for him so he gets what he needs as he is still growing. There may be special things you may need to have on hand for this diet that you are not aware of during growth spurts.

I am not sure on any online places as I live in Madison Hts and I go to Whole Foods or Carls (another health food store). Some of your local grocery stores also carry what you need now. You can always make the trip and 'bulk up' to avoid too many trips.

I love to buy online, but not for food products. I just want to touch, see, smell and feel the items. Too much can happen with the food~ (just my thoughts on that one!)
