Chick-fil-a Controversy... What Other Companies?

Updated on August 03, 2012

The post yesterday got a lot of mixed answers... several mothers pointed out that several companies also have controversial stances, yet aren't boycotted.

Of course, they didn't get the media blowup that Chic-fil-a did...

So, what other companies (that you know of...) have taken controversial stances? Particularly on the LGBT topic... And, of those companies, which ones are actively working against human rights? (Also... WHAT are they doing that is so controversial?)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

OBVIOUSLY we can't boycott everything that we don't agree with... When there is no other choice, and I HAVE to use something... Well, my family's needs come before my own moral stands. If there was an option B that was accessible, and wouldn't break the bank, then heck yes I would boycott gasoline. Like when I lived on a farm in my hometown... I had a diesel truck, that ran on the bio-fuel my grandpa made in his garage (out of the canola he grew himself). Our home was powered with natural gas, and we grew most of our food on our own, or bought from our neighbors.

There are many, many corrupt businesses out there... I get that. I don't have the time or inclination to research every little thing before I buy it... Hence this question... I'm not about to go to great lengths, but if I have a choice between eating at a restaurant that will use my money to actively fights gay rights, or one that simply pockets the proceeds (or donates to charities I agree with...) then I will make the small decision to put my money towards the better (imo) choice.

Also... It IS Chick-fil-a's right to do what they want with their money. I don't begrudge them that right... But I'm not about to give them my money to do what I think is wrong....

ON A SIDE NOTE.... I do find it funny that they take their stance based on the bible... yet still serve bacon and sausage sandwiches (and platters) for breakfast.... Doesn't the bible tell you not to eat pork...? "And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you: ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcase" (Deuteronomy 14:8) Hypocritical much? (sorry... I couldn't help it... I honestly have no problem with people who believe the bible, but when they pick and choose which parts should pertain to the masses, it irks me...)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ETA~~~Thanks to those who clarified the scripture thing... I didn't realize that one part of the bible got to negate another... but I guess even waaay back when laws evolved... (Guess God changed his mind...?) So I will revise my stance on that. :) (P.S... please take any religious statements I make tongue in cheek... I have a somewhat ironic regard for all things religious... I honestly don't mean any true insult to anyone... I have several extremely devout family members who have learned not to take me too seriously when we talk religion...)

Also... I never said that people aren't allowed to publicly display their faith... OR to state their opinion... Just that I feel it is WRONG to spend my money in a place that will turn around and use it to fund anti-gay charities.... I wouldn't dream of begrudging anyone else the right to put their money where their values lie. The point of this question was to find out what other companies are doing things with their profits that I wouldn't want to support. That is all.

And Runnermom.... I absolutely don't have a problem with the whole Chic-fil-a support day or all the media attention that his company has received... Heck, that's not even his fault. The media blew the story out of proportion. BUT I DO have a problem with the organizations that they donate to, which I did not know before the whole controversy started. THAT is where my problem lies, not with freedom of speech, not with his religious beliefs, or even his stance on gay rights. (also... I am NOT an Obama fan, at all... And find it veery fishy that he changed his stance on gay marriage rights during an election year...)

I have boycotted several liberal leaning companies and celebrities. After reading the other responses, it appears that there are a few more companies that I need to boycott and several companies I need to be supporting. Great question!! Thanks!

Hi! Walmart for oh so many reasons. For women---they discriminate against women in management. For those screaming about illegal aliens---they hire them. For pro-business--- they run them out of town. They actively bully companies into giving them a better deal which then falls on employees to make up. The human rights violations of the companies they deal with to provide their products should make you feel sick. I can go on, there is more but I'm hosting teens and they need food! Peruse the web, find out more... They even affect the music industry... Cheap? I don't think so...

Frankly , I shop where I need to for what I need.
I don't care what a company's moral, religious beliefs are. If they have products that I like , at a price that I like I will shop there.
My buying or not buying products aren't going to effect what they believe. Boycotts don't work.
Chick Fil-A never said , sorry we don't serve gays. They never said sorry we don't hire gays. Mr Cathy only said " I support traditional marriage"

Just because someone does not support or agree with something does not mean they HATE. Just because someone does not agree with the gay lifestyle does not mean they hate gays. I have friends and family both that are gay and bisexual. I don't hate my friends and family. They know how I feel about the life style. They know I don't agree with it, but I still love them. One of my oldest and dearest friends is bi , I love him with all my heart.
These days if anyone says they don't support the gay agenda , if they think being gay is a sin and they don't support it , they are immediately a bigot and a homophobe. It's got nothing to do with fear or hate. Now if you are going to boycot in the name of gay rights, then boycott anything connected to OPEC.

Liberals preach tolerance but are intolerant of anything they don't agree with.Anyone that does not agree with them on anything your a racist , bigot or a homophobe.

ETA: the passages you are referring to on pork were actually in the Old Testament and later in the new testament , God said it was ok to eat those. The old testament is the old covenant , more of a history book, New testament, is the new covenant or the current rules. Unless you're Jewish then you follow what's equivlant to the new testament, and in that case pork is a no no.

Controversial according to whose standards? On my list is Planned Parenthood - they encourage abortion, ABC/Disney and all their affiliates - they encourage promiscuity and non-family values, and America's current presidential administration - you name it.

Chikafila stood up for its beliefs when no other company did or would.

President Obama stood up for gay rights with media backing, high dollar celebrity endorsements and on key fundraising dates. That was not brave. It was pretty chicken of him.

Chikafila got it right, no matter if they asked for all that attention or not. And for the record, the CEO made a statement about Biblical marriage, not against gay rights, yet somehow, once again, the tolerant diversity-flag waving upstanding gay community of our great nation turn it into another Christian bashing. Apparently some people need to look up tolerance in the dictionary.

J. honey, don't quote anything unless you've studied it with a teachable heart, not a malicious one. In this case, your Biblical quote would make more sense than not.

Thank you Jessica Wessica or whatever your call sign is, for the proverbial name calling from the gay rights side that members of your POV seem to excel at. Fyi, I just looked up bigot and here are the definitions I pulled up: "1) a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance 2) intolerant person: somebody with strong opinions, especially on politics, religion, or ethnicity, who refuses to accept different views 3) a person who is utterly intolerant of any differing creed, belief, or opinion. " So....I guess that makes you a Christian, right Jessicawhatever?

Girl Scouts is an organization that supports & promotes Planned Parenthood; their logo & information is on Girl Scouts literature.....that's just what I want to explain to my daughter

The only reason why this got blown up is because the media and most liberals Hate/Despise Christianity and will do anything to break it down. They obviously sucked you in.

Why is it ok for Liberals to ban & demonize companies that don't support things that they believe in but not ok for Conservative companies? The CEO wasn't talking on behalf of his company but his own personal belief. And he wasn't ignorant or demeaning at all. Yet the left is very demeaning of this mans stance, it backfired & backfired real good :)

FYI about Christianity; WE do not believe we are *perfect*. I am sick of posters saying that that's why they don't go to church and that we are hypocrites, bigots, homophobes, racists etc, who do no wrong. In fact the reason WE go to church is to better ourselves because we know we are NOT perfect & never will be. And I couldn't think of a better place to go but Gods House.

I support Walmart, Jamba Juice, Boy Scouts, Hobby Lobby, and of course Chick Fil A

BTW You should be against Apple, they have tons of human violations, tax evasion etc.

Let's see.....

JCP - refused to cave when One Million Moms group boycotted them for hiring Ellen Degneres.

Ben & Jerry ice cream - made Chubby Hubby when Vermont voted for gay rights.

Boeing - has benefits for same-sex couples.

Starbucks

I am sure there are more. The funny thing about the Chick-Fil-A bru-ha-ha is that the liberal media took off and ran with an interview on a Christian radio station - instead of a boycott - they got MASS publicity and MASS sales...so thank you liberal media...

Those against:
Exxon-Mobil - they USED to until the merger.
Wal-Mart -
Urban Outfitters has faced this same problem as well.
A-1 Self Storage
The Salvation Army!!! YES PEEPS!! The Salvation Army...
And as I asked yesterday - where we all these people who wanted to boycott things when Obama said he DID NOT support same-sex marriage and then flip-flopped to get their votes??? Where were these people THEN????

Do I care if you are gay? No.
Do I care if you are any color? No.
I care about your character.

Most companies do not work actively against human rights. If the CEO of a company has religious beliefs that run contrary to someone elses - but the company treats all employees & customers fairly they are not taking a controversial stance. Let's face it if you put gas in your car you're supporting OPEC - which is a middle-eastern organziation whose member countries have very strong extreme religious beliefs - which includes putting gays to death, honor killings of sisters & daughters if they are too familiar with a man, terrorism, etc. Do you still drive your car, turn on your lights, or heat your hot water to take a shower?
While we're on the subject how about the charitiable organizations supported by the Catholic Church? They have a moral conflict with providing and paying for contraceptives, sterlization & the morning-after pill - yet Health Care Reform requires that they do so as of yesterday or face a $100 per day, per employee fee. Who is the organziation working against human rights in this instance? While I am a huge believ in using contraceptives and had my tubes tied a few years ago, I firmly believe that an employer should not have to pay for them if they have a moral conflict with them. And I think it's just wrong to force them to do so. To me the US Government is actively working against human rights.

We liev in the USA where we are supposed to have the right to believe whatever we want and then state it out loud. THAT'S in the Consitution - birth control is not.

Google O. Million Moms for some info on past boycotts.

I'm liberal AND a Christian.

The difference is I don't use "Christian values" to justify hate.

It's quite obvious and ironic when people justify hateful behavior with their religion.

The upside is it makes it very simple to sort out the hypocrits.

This is probably going to put me on the bad list but I have never researched companies to the extent that I've seen others on this board do. I have never had the time and to be quite frank, I feel as though if I had to research all of them I'd likely not give my money to anyone.

I support my family therefore I shop where they have the things I need.
Maybe that makes me a bad or ill-informed American.

UNICEF is a BIG supporter of forced abortion in China. and have shut down international adoption because it wasn't perfect and the children should stay in their own countries even if it means slowly dying in an orphanage.

what bothers me about Chic Filla is that they are actually making money on their stance. The lines were long yesterday and according to the articles I read the poor employees had to listen to lots of horrid statements by customers who are very anti gay. Why did people feel the need to run to Chick fillet to show they are in support? Its not freedom of speech when you are against certain humans, and this company has a history of being against women as well.

Well, J., I'm a liberal AND a Christian. I know plenty of people who don't believe that having Christian beliefs means that they tell other people how to live their lives, whether it has to do with being gay or whether or not to use birth control, etc. The idea that all liberals hate and want to tear down Christianity is untrue and is just said to try to make a certain segment of people look bad.

There are most likely gay workers who work for Check-fil-a. Maybe management knows - maybe they don't. I'm sure the owner doesn't know every employee in the company. I saw what the guy whose company fired him said to the Chick-Fil-A gal who was working in the drive-through - he was just awful to her. She didn't deserve his rudeness at all. I was proud of how appropriate her answer back to him was. (And I don't blame his boss for firing him - quite frankly, I think he deserved it.)
