My daughter went to the doctor this afternoon with a wet cough that kept her up at night, runny nose, sneezing, and slight weezing, and was diagnosed with walking pneumonia. She was prescribed Albuterol (inhaler) and an antibiotic. Me and my kids have never dealt with this before. Anyones child ever had this? I am really concerned with it turning into regular pneumonia. Is that possible???? Thanks everyone for your answers in advance.
One of my girls had walking pneumonia early last year, just in time for her birthday. The worst part for her is she is a track runner and it really messed her up not being able to run. She could not breathe, which is what prompted us to go to the doc in the first place. She took the meds prescribed and everything was fine after.
Walking pneumonia is just a mild case of pneumonia. If walking pneumonia isn't treated it can turn into a more serious case of pneumonia. That is not likely to happen to your child since you have meds and will be treating the pneumonia. Have her get plenty of rest and fluids, along with the meds and she should be fine. I had walking pneumonia, assumed it was just a bad cold, didn't rest or get treatment and ended up in the hospital.
Walking pneumonia is regular pneumonia. Take the meds and if she doesn't feel better within a week, go back.
I had it a few years ago and started to feel better (not so exhausted) within 48 hours of starting antibiotics. Cough hung around a bit longer than that. My son had it when he was 2, and it was similar. He regained his energy within a few days and kicked the cough a week or two after that.
Yes my son had it, at age 9 and he was sick for a while but ultimately fine.
Since you forgot to ask your doctor this question just pick up the phone and call, the advice nurse can help you. If the office is closed it will go straight to the 24 hour advice line and you can ask them.
You'll get much more reassuring and ACCURATE information by doing that.

Your daughter needs to stay on top of her meds and rest up as much as possible so her body can recuperate.
My 11year old had it this past fall.
He recovered fine. But we followed the doctor's instructions and had a follow up to check that it was cleared.
While he was being treated I just made sure he was well rested, hydrated and didn't push himself.
My daughter was diagnosed with this around age 10. The thought is scary but you need to follow all Dr orders, finish all medicines and things should get better.
She was tired for a while and the cough lingered but she was ok. She's 21 now!
I had it when I was in high school. One of the most miserable times in my life! I missed a few days of school and had a lingering cough for quite awhile. As long as you do the full course of the medication and make sure she gets plenty of rest it shouldn't get more serious.

I had it when I was in my 20's. I just rested, took my meds, and went back for a follow up visit when I was done my meds. I think that part is really important - to make sure the medication was effective.
I would think if you saw signs of it getting worse, you'd just take your child in. That's why it's key to get a list of things to look for and do from your doctor.
I have only known a couple of people in my life with full on pneumonia. Antibiotics and rest usually work.
I get walking pneumonia almost every fall from allergies that move down into my lungs. I haven't had pneumonia since I was a very young child. I guess it could progress but Albuterol and meds done right should keep the airways open.
I use Tussin, Walmart's brand of Guaifenesin. It's the SAME med in Mucinex and Robitussin. It's purpose is to make the goo in the lungs MORE RUNNY. So it can be coughed up and out.
The goal of Albuterol, Guaifenesin, antibiotics is to get the goo out and keep infection from forming. If the goo turns yellow or green get another appointment with the doc.
I've had walking pneumonia twice. I stayed home and rested a couple of days before going back to work. For me the meds worked quickly. It's unlikely that this will become a more serious form of pneumonia because she's taking an antibiotic. I did slow down and got more rest.
We've been conditioned to believe pneumonia is serious. It can be serious for those whose immunity is compromised. Senior citizens often die from pneumonia. Your child is young and has good health. She'll be fine.
That's my experience. You really need to get information from the doctor or advice nurse.
