Cloth Diapering on the Go

Ok CD moms...I love our fuzzi bunz and we use them at home all the time. Here's my question....how do you cloth diaper on the go? I'm specifically wondering about dealing with poopy dipes (wet ones are no big deal...got my wet bag and am good to go) I asked a friends who cd and she carries a large ziploc with her, shakes it out and puts the dirty dipe in there. Not to be gross, but my DD is still young and her poop is not *ahem* shakable yet. :-) At home we have a sprayer on the toilet to clean up the mess before it goes into the bin. Any tips? Thanks in advance!!!

What can I do next?

If the baby is exclusively breastfed, then I would just throw it in the wetbag and go. For older babies who aren't "shakeable" I used a disposable/flushable liner. It kind of looked like a dryer sheet and just flushed down with the poop. No muss, no fuss. I think I got mine on Amazon, but you can find them lots of places. I CD full time now, and most of the time just chance it. We normally aren't out that long anyway though!

I am going to start using the flushable liners. If you go to nickisdiapers.com or greenmountiandiapers.com and they have them there. You just put them on top of the diaper and then if there is a poopy, you just flush it down and not have to worry.

when i used cloth diapers but remeber this was 21 yrs ago and the cloth diapers have changed. I used to rinse them in the toilet. dip dip and dip again. put them in a big ziploc bag and put them in bleach water in a pail until laundering. sometimes if it is bad enough you will have to flush the toilet a couple of times to get the bad stuff out. I don't know about the cloth diapers now so adjust accordingly.

I also use the flushable/biodegradable diaper liners (Bummis makes some, and so does Imse Vimse (sp?); we like the Bummis better). You can buy the Bummis locally at Sprout Soup on High St in Columbus.

During any diaper change, if it's dirty, the liner goes into the toilet or port o'john, and the rest of the diaper goes into a zip loc bag. I sprinkle a little baking soda into the zip locs and pack a bunch like this, (sealed shut so the soda doesn't get everywhere).

If the liner is just wet, I flush it, or if that's not an option, I dispose of it in the trash. You can wash the liners (I have accidentally), but you can't reuse them since they sort of fall apart in the wash. (Bummis end up sort of like tangled yarn & get stuck in velcro but can be removed-be warned! LOL).

I keep the dirty diapers sealed up in the zip locs till I get a chance to wash, and then I usually do an extra rinse and wash cycle on top of my normal routine. I can fit 4 or 5 medium size dipes (for a 19m old) in a gallon ziploc.

Newborn/breastfed baby poop will pretty much just wash right out (in some cases, you might see some slight staining, but it's poop & that happens & is part of cloth diapering, imo. :) You can hang the diapers in the sun to help with staining if it bothers. I also do a cold wash, then a hot wash, to help prevent stains and get them really clean.

I use the liners that you throw right in the toilet like toilet paper. At first, I thought they were a little rough, but once you get them a little wet, they soften enough to the touch, plus my daughter has never had any issues with them.... Good Luck!

I also use Fuzzi Bunz and when my son was pre-solids I would just put the poopy diaper in the wet bag. It was unpleasant to empty, but I could deal with it. Now that he's 18 months and constantly drinking water in the sunshine I've found that it's easier just to put him in disposables for car rides over an hour. Today I bought Thirsties Hemp Inserts to try to help lengthen the life of the Fuzzi Bunz. I'll let you know how it goes!

Sounds like your baby isn't on solids yet. If so, then you don't really have to rinse them at all. It will come out in the washer. I usually just kind of fold it over and put it in the wetbag until I get home. Unless it's really messy, it doesn't get everything else icky. I use SmartiPants when we're out and about so I don't have to pull out liners that are all nasty. They're a sleeve diaper and the inserts come right out in the wash.

I EBF my son and when we go out if he poos I just wrap it up and throw it in the wet bag with the rest of the diapers and take care of it when I get home. EBF poo comes out in the wash but I still rinse the diapers and wipes (use cloth wipes) in the sink before throwing them in my pail.
As baby gets older and poos start to get more solid just dump the poo in the trash as best you can (I would guess that plastic knives would be great to use as 'scrapers' when out) or use flushable liners like others have said.

I just closed it up and stuffed it in the wet bag. When I got home I (carefully!!!) sorted through the dipes...moved the wet ones to a bigger wetbag and rinsed the poopy ones in the toilet with the sprayer. I never had staining issues and found that the poppy ones were actually easier to clean if they had sat for awhile...the poop kind of solidifies and it's actually easier to get off!

I don't rinse my poo either, not until my kids are eating food and their poo is solid. When that time comes I either take care of it by dunking it in the toilet where I am, or putting it in the wetbag and taking care of it when I get home. If I am at my parents or sisters I don't have a problem dunking in their toilets, if I am out in a public place, well I am not so keen on dunking there.

I always remember and if I have ever forgotten, I remember when I am doing the laundry. It isn't "fun", I was always happy when my babes would poop before we would leave to go out. Lucky for me all of my children have learned to use the toilet right at or a little before their second b-days.

Hope this helps : )

If you daughter is breastfed, just pop it in a ziploc like your friend and stick it in the wetbag. Breastfed baby poo doesn't have to be rinsed or anything. It washes right out. I never rinsed my breastfed daughter's diapers till she started eating solids. I also never had a stain on the diappes till she started solid either lol!

I bought a box of biodegradable liners (I use the G Diaper liner) for when we are out and I know we're due for a BM. Much easier to toss that out than to bring the stinky poo diaper around with you all day.
