So What Happened?

Wow! Thanks for all the good ideas. I'm going to give my husband a valentine gift that my 2 yr old helped decorate and the positive test will be inside. For all the grandma's I'm giving them roses on Valentines with a "roses are red" poem inside that announces. For everyone else, I'm sending a Valentine with the poem. I'm glad you are all so creative. Thanks again!!

I had a ribbon that I tied around my stomach with a little tag on it that said "Do not open until.......(listing my due date)". I was actually due in December so I made the tag with green and red and said it was an early Christmas present.

I had my son wear a soon-to-be-a-big-brother t-shirt. It was cute and it took a while for everyone to read the shirt. It was kind of funny when they finally realized what he was wearing.

Have fun!

My husband and I found out together after taking a home-pregnancy test. However, we did decide to use creative methods to tell our families since most people thought we would never have children (it took us almost 8 years to get married!)

We waited until after our first trimester with both of our children. With our first baby, our first trimester ended just before Father's Day. My husband and I gave each of our fathers a photo album with an ultrasound picture. I'll admit it took both of them a short time to figure out what it was, but when they finally realized what they were looking at, they were overjoyed!

With our second, our first trimester ended just before Valentine's day. Since I love rubber stamping and make hand-made cards, I made Valentine's cards for our immediate family members and wrote the following poem inside:
"Roses are red, violets are blue, there's someone anxious to meet all of you. We know you've been hoping, your wish has come true, a new baby is coming, in August we're due!"

Congratulations!!

A picture frame worked for me. Since the Mom, usually gets the pictures up, he'll wonder why you gave him and empty frame...then just explain it's for #2.

You can get a photo frame that has two photo spaces.
In one you can put a cute photo of your son. In the other space you can write something like "coming to a family near you in the fall of 2008". It would be a fun Valentine's gift.
I did something like this for my 2 year old son and everyone love it. In fact my mother in-law still has it on the wall.

I had a friend who bought a neutral colored baby outfit and wrapped it up as a gift to her husband. When he opened it, he was confused for a second, then got the idea. They both loved the outcome!
As for telling your parents, you could buy a little something that says "I love my Grandma" or something with grandma or grandpa in it and give it to them as a present.

When I got pregnant the second time all my sisters had already had children too so my mother was already a grandmother of 10. I simply sat talking with her about regular things and waited for one of the grandkids to come by and ask her for something. Then I said wow mom you sure have alot of grandkids now Christmas is going to be expensive buying for 11 (which was one more than she had). She agreed with me and went on with the conversation but in about a minute she recounted the kids and realized what I meant and called all my sisters from the other room so she could tell them. She was so excited you would have thought it was her first grandchild.

I'm going to cheat today, I'm copying and pasting an old response that I wrote to another person but I really thought it was fun the way we told my parents.

With telling my parents it was more of just a conversation. I was on the phone with my mother and telling her a story of how my husband met an old classmate of his (which is true). I went on explaining how he thought it was fun to catch up on od thing and how my husband was happy how life has changed for him since then. He's gotten married, moved into a bigger apartment, got a full time job as a teacher, has a baby on the way...... It took my mom all of 3 seconds to scream WHO'S HAVING A BABY?!?!?!? i responded that we were going to have a baby and she continued to scream OH MY I GOTTA GO I GOT SOME PHONE CALLS TO MAKE!! She didnt ask me how i was doing, how long along i was or anything just said how she had to go and call people. It was a lot of fun. I hope you find something memorable to do to tell everyone. It really is a lot of fun. Cant wait to do it again myself someday soon.

Some friends of mine had a photo album that they were showing their family of some vacation or something they had done and at the end of the photo album there they had put their ultrasound pictures. I thought that was kinda fun as well..

As for the husband I'm thinking the next time I get pregnant, at some point we will be out and about I will talk him into shopping at a clothing store and I am going to suggest that that I need new pants. (He likes to go shopping with me, kinda a strange guy I know) I figured I would hold up a pair of maternity pants and ask him what he thought of those... Maybe not the most intimate of setting but fun, I hope!!

Like LeAnn, I made a shirt for my son that said, "Big Brother March 2005" in pink and blue writing. When my husband came home, my son was wearing the shirt and I had him take the positive pregnancy test to his daddy. My husband was shocked and said, "Well I certainly didn't expect this when I came home today!"

When we were having a family party several weeks later and were ready to tell the family, we had our son wear the same shirt. It took a few minutes before anyone noticed but when they did they thought it was such a cute way to announce it.

My husband and I just had our first baby last year. I found out we were expecting the Saturday before Valentine's day. It just so happened I already had a special dinner planned for that evening.

I set the table elegantly with candles. I made a fancy meal and dessert, and even a menu. I had also bought a special dress to wear to the dinner at home. At my husband's place setting a set a box with a bow on it. It was the size of a ring box. Inside was a little card that said "congratulations, you're going to be a daddy [and the date]."

It was so touching and he was surprised. It made our romantic evening even more special.

I recently thought I was pregnent (but found out I wasn't) but I was going to do this and tell everyone one V-day. On "http://www.mymms.com/" you can personalize M&M's with sayings. I was going to do blue and pink ones and put "Boy or Girl?" and "C-U in
Sept!" Another thing I did for my 2nd baby to tell my husband was put together an Easter basket with blue and pink eggs and baby booties hanging from the handel with 3 positive pregnancy tests inside, while my toddler brought it in to him on Easter morning wearing a shirt that said "I'm the big brother". Later that day we drove to CO to see my family and Ethan continued to wear the shirt...but no one noticed so I just had to tell them.

Good luck!

Congrats M.! I didn't read the other responses, so forgive me if someone already gave you this idea. When I found out I was prego again. I made a poster that said "Guess What.....I am going to be a big brother". I had my son hold it and took a pic. I sent it to all our family and friends.

If there is a holiday around, you can give family members gifts with a two theme... ie (a 2 candle, two turtle doves, etc). They'll probably look at you funny until they figure it out. It's fun though. Congrats again!!!!

Our first was more interesting - he was a first grandchild both sides too! -- Gave my hubby the "stick" in a box, with a bib that said "Love You Daddy"
Had the parents and inlaws over for a brunch - gave the grandmas booties, each got a pink and blue -- there was screaming going on :)
I also like "Lacy's" Tshirt idea -- my SIL had my MIL - wear a shirt that said "My Wife is a Hot Momma" :)

This is what my husband did to tell his parents that we were expecting our 2nd child. His mom keeps a calendar on the wall that she write everything on so my hub wrote the due date on the calendar. My son was due close to my birthday so he asked his mom if she could check her calendar to see if she would be available for babysitting that weekend. Thinking that we would be going out for my birthday, she checked it then came running back in the room. She was surprized that we already knew the due date, but loved the surprize. With our first born, my hub told his parents that "in November we'll be getting a room mate". For some reason his dad thought that we were getting a pet. His mom caught on right away. They were elated. They were even more excited when we found out that it was a girl b/c my husband is the oldest of 5 boys.

Here is just an example of what we did when we were expecting our second child. We ironed the saying "I am going to be a big brother" on a shirt. He wore the shirt on Christmas Day with another shirt over it. We had my mother take off the one shirt and "tada" she got to read the shirt underneath. My mother (grandma) was so excited. She absolutely loved how we told her.

When I was pregnant with my 2nd son, my 1st son helped me share the news. I made signs that said...

Hi Dad!
Guess What?
I'm going to be a BIG BROTHER!!

I had some other new pictures that my husband hadn't seen, so I put together a little photo album with the new pictures then pictures of my son holding each of these signs. We gave the photo album to my husband to look through and loved the look of surprise on his face as he got to the last 3 pictures. My son was older than yours, so he was excited to be in on telling dad.

I don't know if this will work to initially tell everyone, but we did this when we surprised out family with the gender.
We made up a DVD on the computer with a photo program, of our whole family ( hubby's side, siblings, nieces, nephews, etc.) I started out with each person having a frame that introduced them, then their photo. Once it got to the grandkids, I did that in order: Austin O'Bray- then his picture pops up, well our son is the youngest, so I got to his, and then right after his picture came up, the next frame read " It's a Girl" and her name and then a picture of her ultrasound.
You can use this idea, without a picture too.
Hope this helps, maybe for someone else too. It was a fun video, and everyone watches it over and over, since everyone was included in it!

When I find out that I was pregnant with my first child I went to the local dollar store and bought a binky. I wrapped it up and when my husband got home from work I had him open it. My mom did the same thing to my dad when she found out that she was pregnant with my little brother, that's where I got the idea. As for your family, you could get them some newborn baby supplies and tell them that they will be needing them a few months down the road. I told my mom and dad and in laws by emailing them a scanned copy of my first ultra sound (the doctor did that to find out how far along I was). I called my mom and told her to check her email and was on the phone with her as she found out. The response was great! I hope that gives you some ideas!

Hi M.! First of all... CONGRATULATIONS! When I was expecting my first child, I found out I was pregnant right around Father's Day, and the baby's due date was Valentine's Day... So, on Father's Day, I created a card on the computer that said, Happy Valentine's Day on the outside, and on the inside it said, "Why am I wishing you a Happy Valentine's Day on Father's Day?... Because that's when you'll be a Father for the first time! It's only an estimate of course, but that's their best guess! :-)"

He actually cried!

I made similar cards for the grandpas too.

Since it's almost Valentine's Day now, your husband will be expecting a Valentine's Day card. So you could give him a Halloween or Thanksgiving card (whichever is closer to your due date), and say something like "Why am I giving you Halloween card on Valentine's Day? Because we'll have something much more concrete that celebrates our love then... Daddy... x2... :-)"

Good luck!

We had my parents over for dinner. I put a hamburger bun by itself on a rack in the cold oven. After dinner had started, I asked my dad to please get the food I forgot in the oven. It was very funny. He grabbed two pot holders to bring over the bun and place it on the table. Mom looked puzzled and Dad started eating, so I said, "Oh, there's a bun in my oven?" Mom laughed and Dad still looked puzzled. I guess this only works if your family is familiar with the phrase...

How we told our family what the baby's sex was, we ordered a special Dairy Queen cake that said "We have this cake for you to enjoy to find out if we're having a girl or a boy." They wrote (with food safe marker) a little XY on the cardboard and the family had to eat the whole cake to see what the sex was. Maybe you could get a Valentine's Day cake, or even make one, and write on the cake "Happy Valentine's Day from the 4 of us!" or "Guess what...? We have a new little Valentine joining the family." Something along those lines may be cute. Either way, it's fun to announce. :)

Buy a plain tshirt and then you can make it with fabric glue and yarn/beads or just buy fabric paint. All supplies are available at a craft store like Michaels or Hobby Lobby.

Hi M.,
For our first daughter, we waited until Mother's day to make the announcement and we did it by attatching sonogram pictures to the inside of the Mother's day cards for both grandma's. This was a big hit. Lucky for me, both grandma's were in attendance at a family event and opened the cards at the same time. For our second daughter, we made the announcement at our Easter family gathering by making a little t-shirt for my firstborn to wear that said "I'm the BIG sister". Also a big hit.

I'm sure you have gotten a million cute ideas, but here is another one: I bought a plain white t-shirt for my little boy and som efabric markers and wrote on the shirt "I'm going to be a big brother!" We just put the shirt on him when we visited our parents and waited until they read it. It was cute.

Here's one my sister-in-law did for us: They bought a bunch of fortune cookies and took the fortunes out(I think with tweezers) then slipped their own frotunes in that said "You wil have a new family member soon (or something like that). Then they passed them out at a family dinner.

We bought our son a plain yellow t-shirt and bought individual letters at a craft store that ironed on and said Big Brother. We had him wear it to the next family function and it was fun to watch people's excitement and looks. To tell my husband, I had our son color on the driveway in chalk and I wrote, we love you daddy - Mommy, Hayden and baby. It was quite fun.

My cousin had a great way, she bought a t-shirt for her little girl (that was also about two) that said "I'm going to be a big sister" and then, just let her wear it until people noticed and read it. She got huge reations. It was really cute!

What I did was we had a book (that you could slip a piece of paper into/a picture book). We put in the slot (baby due december 3rd). And then we made grandma read the book to my little one. When we got to that page, well lets just say the story ended and it was all cheers.

Good luck! My mom loved this. we have pictures and everything which is really cool.

Goodness- thank you for asking this! I never would have thought of it. I just kinda said- "hey, so I think we're having a baby." To everyone. I'm not creative, and these ideas are wonderful! Thanks again, and congrats!

Hubby and I had been trying for quite some time. I hadn't been feeling just right for about a week or more, so I took the test on a Thursday - about 4:00 in the morning. POSITIVE! It was about this time of year and we were planning on going snowmobiling up north on that Sat. So I went and bought a cute little Valentine card with a little baby on the front. (those are hard to find when your actually looking for one!) Then I waited until we were in the middle of nowhere & stopped to check the map & have some pop. I gave him the card and I had signed it "Happy Valentines Day, Love from your bun in the oven". The look on his face was priceless. I thought he was going to do handsprings in the snow!

Well, with our first, we took the parents to dinner and we had taken a picture of the home preg test and printed it out. We put it in an envelope with a paper that said it was a report about "project peanut" (peanut is what we called her before she was born because we didn't know the sex but wanted to call her something other than "baby") and the report was basically just a paper that said the results of the test were conclusive and it was positive that I had the condition. We gave them the envelope with the "report" and the picture at dinner.
With our 2nd, we put my daugther in a onsie that said "Big Sister" and went to visit her grandparents and asked them to change her diaper so they would see it.
Congrats and good luck! Have fun with the announcement!
