We recently found out our "expecting" friend couple are having a little party to discover the sex of their baby. They are getting the ultrasound, having the doc put the gender in a sealed envelope, that envelope will be sent to a baker, and a cake will be delivered in blue or pink on the day of the party.

Cool....right?

Well....my husband wants to do something like that, but NOT exactly that about our unborn babies Gender. I told him id rack my brain and surf the internet but i decided to shake you ladies up for ideas.

I thought it might be fun to make bets and stuff, and the right guessers would get "something" for being right, idk. Its already somewhat of a thing with all my friends because we have two girls already and everybody is speculating about wether or not ill have a third.

So please any and every idea are welcome!

What can I do next?

Some friends of mine gave the envelope and a pink and blue decorated box to somewhere that blows up helium balloons, and then they went and picked up the box and set it up on a table until time for the big reveal. Then when it was time they opened the lid and the color of the balloons that flew out told them it was a girl! The balloons were tied together and I think the box lid was taped down so there was no chance of them flying out before hand. But I guess the balloons could be without strings if the ceiling isn't too tall!

I saw on a TV show where the parents went and picked out two teddy bears from a gift shop, one pink one and one blue one - then they gave the sealed envelope to the shop person and left. She wrapped up the bear that was the correct color - they picked it up later and then they opened it at the party for everyone to find out together.

It was really cute, AND they also had something as a keepsake where balloons or cake are gone the day of the party......

I've seen lot of these guess the gender bets on facebook lately, it seems like some people have a lot of fun with it.

As for how to break the news? I've heard the cake thing, it sounds so cute. but like you said, you want something a little different since your friends are doing it.

What if, you have a party store something blow up a few balloons, and fill them with confetti... Pink for a girl, blue for a boy, (just make sure the balloons aren't light enough to see the color throguh them.) At the party (or home), pull out some pins and pop the balloons to see what color it is? Take a picture and post the picture for people to see. What is more celebratory and fun than confetti?!

Betting sounds good. I don't know how to go about doing it though. The right guessers should get the money pool that they bet. Maybe you make a grid that says the due date and gender. Whoever gets the closest date with the correct gender wins? It costs $1 to put your name on a grid-space?

The cake thing -- I have heard about a cake that's white or whatever on the outside, and you don't know if it's a boy or a girl until you cut INTO the cake and there's a layer of frosting in the middle that's either pink or blue. Or the cake itself is dyed pink/blue, but you can't tell until you cut into it. That'd be more of a surprise i think, than getting a box and opening the box to see either a pink or blue cake.

I've seen gender cakes. You have the baker (or mommy) make a cake and put pink or blue icing in the middle of 2 layers, frost with something neutral, like chocolate or cream cheese. Noone will know until you cut the cake.

The betting idea sounds fun but I would have it where the couple having the baby gets the $ for a gift.

Another idea would be a scavenger hunt and the first person to find the "treasure chest" would get to do the reveal of the gender. Just a thought.

Sounds like it will be fun though!

A friend had the bakery put plastic babies in the cake - pink or blue and so they didn't know until they ate the cake which gender.

A sales lady at the local boutique told me that customers will have her pick out bedding for both boy or girl and give her the sealed envelope and then she delivers the correct nursery theme based on that. Similar to wrapping a bear someone else mentioned. You could do that with baby clothes, too - pick out going home outfits or special blankets and have them wrapped up by the sales clerk. (I guess I think of practical things).
