Daughter Refuses to Wear Pull-up to Bed

My daughter is 3 1/2 and potty trained during the day but still has regular accidents during bedtime/napping. The problem is she doesn't want to wear a pull-up because she insists they are too "itchy" I have tried letting her go to bed without one but I have had it with doing loads of sheets/comfortors every single day. I've tried having her put it on over a pair of underwear or shorts but she still has a fit about it and I have to battle with her to put it on. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Is she still in a toddler bed? We have a plastic cover that fits over the entire mattress. That has been a huge help over the years for us. You still have to wash the sheets, but at least you don't have to completely strip the entire bed. You can just wipe off the plastic cover with a baby wipe and put another set of sheets on. I have also tried to stick the waterproof changing pads underneath them while they sleep, but my kids are WILD sleepers and that ends up not really helping that much. Good Luck!

I put my almost 3 yo daughter in cloth diapers for nap and huggies overnights for bed. Maybe you could try cloth?

Once she falls asleep; put a pull up on her.

I feel your dilemma as I'm having the same issue with my 3 1/2 yr old! She does fine with naps but it's bedtime. I finally just told her that if she went 7 days without pottying in her pull up then she could start wearing her panties at night. I've put stars on the calendar and if she counts 7 stars in a row, she's done with pull ups. But if doesn't, we start all over again. So far it's working and hopefully it's giving her a little incentive. She also takes a small dose of Benadryl at night so I know she doesn't even know she's going. Good luck!

I slide full-sized absorbant crib pads under my DD's fitted sheet so she can't see it. (they come in 2 packs fora round 10$ at Target) Then if she has an accident, we just pull off the fitted sheet and pad, then lay a new one down - saves me a lot of time from having to wash the actual mattress pad! Also, we just bought an extra package of undies so there's plenty more when accidents happen.

Have you tried training pants? Not pull-ups but trainers. Something that is not disposable and is cloth and pretty like real underwear? Imse Vimse makes some great ones but they are probably best for small accidents. If you need true overnight protection, try the ones made by Happy Heiny. They come in all sorts of cute prints and pretty colors and your daughter won't feel as if she is regressing back to diapers. Here is a link. http://www.cottontailbaby.com/item_576/Happy-Heiny-Pocket...

The only other thing I can think of is a wool cover. If lanolized, wool is pretty much bulletproof in terms of leaks. They are super soft and not itchy. Check out those as well. http://www.cottontailbaby.com/item_122/Kozy-Designs-Wool-...

I know how frustrating it is to have to wash the sheets every day. We had a spell of that around here when one of my guys got sick and the medicine made him sleep through EVERYTHING. A bad spell....

Good luck!

Cloth diaper and plastic pants? Plastic pants over training underwear? BTW, night time training can take months or even years after day time training and that is developmentally appropriate. Good luck.

Will she will a diaper? If she is still having accidents during naptime, then her bladder is not ready to hold it for 8-10 hour bedtime. I would forget about bedtime right now (keep her in a diaper) and focus on naptime. I would keep her in underwear for naps. Make sure she isn't drinking any fluids before naptime and make her go to the bathroom right before and after her nap.

There is some thick cotton undies that will catch most of the urine and put a pair of rubber pants over them. Have her potty before bed and wake her up when you go to bed to go again. Hopefully this will start her body letting her to know to wake up to potty.

I was having the same issue with night-time training (she had been trained during the day for a long time), so this is what I did: for about a week and a half, I had her wear underwear to bed (no more pull-ups, and we talked about "big girl" underwear at night) but around 2 am, I would wake her up and take her into the bathroom and make her use the potty. She was always half-asleep so I would literally have to hold her there but she always went the bathroom on her own. It was tiring for that first week, but after that her body started getting used to "waiting" for the toilet. Then, I could push it out to 5 am, and eventually, after two / two 1/2 weeks, she could hold it until she woke up in the morning. Since then, we have the occassional accident, but she has been completely night-time potty trained.

Oh, I should mention (after reading the other posts), that I did start limiting fluid intake two hours before bed-time (which I still have to do).

Get her some cloth training pants, like Fuzzi Bunz Trickle Free Trainers, or the like. That way they go on like undies, are comfy for her, and still absorbant.

If she has big accidents, then get her some cloth diapers. At least she will be comfortable.

Limit her drinks after she has dinner, have her pee right before she gets into bed.

See if she will let you put the panties on first then put on the pull up. I have done this in the past with two of my three girls and they were ok with it because the panties were touching them. Doing loads of panties is way easier than sheets. Good Luck. J. , mom of 4.
